IPL auction 2014 February 12, 2014

'Wasn't expecting such a big amount' - Karthik

When his name went under the hammer for the IPL auction, Dinesh Karthik was sitting a few kilometers away, in the dressing room at the Chinnaswamy stadium, feeling disappointed with himself. He had just played on to a delivery from Vinay Kumar and walked back for 27, following a first-innings score of 91 in the Irani Cup match against Karnataka. His Rest of India team were on their way to a heavy defeat.

Minutes later, someone in the dressing room yelled out that Karthik had been sold for Rs. 12.50 crore ($2.08 million) to Delhi Daredevils.

"Somebody in the dressing room was just screaming that I went for such a price so that's how I heard," Karthik told ESPNcricinfo. "Very happy, definitely very happy and I wasn't expecting such a big amount. Actually, I came to know a bit later as we didn't have access to television in the dressing room."

Karthik attracted the second-highest bid on the first day of the auction, behind Yuvraj Singh's Rs 14 crore ($2.33 million) bid from Royal Challengers Bangalore. Last year, playing for the victorious Mumbai Indians, Karthik amassed 510 runs with two fifties at a strike-rate of 124.08 and featured in all the 19 matches Mumbai played. Kings XI Punjab had bought him in the 2011 auction for $900,000, and he had moved to Mumbai in a pre-auction transfer in 2012, in exchange for Rajagopal Sathish, for an undisclosed sum.

Now, Karthik is back in Delhi, for whom he had played for the first three seasons, but as part of a completely new Daredevils squad that features another marquee player, Kevin Pietersen.

"I'm happy I'm back in Delhi but definitely I had a great time in Mumbai," Karthik said. "I'll miss the franchise, I had a great time there.

"I think it will be wonderful. He [Pietersen] is a legend so it's going to be great to share the dressing room with him and he'll have a lot of things and inputs to say and It'll be great to play with him."

Even though Karthik will be pleased with the big contract, not being part of India's World T20 squad will have been a letdown, especially since he had been named among the 30 probables. But Karthik said he would continue to try and do well in whatever matches he plays.

"I think I just missed the bus so there's nothing else to it," he said. "I just need to perform better and get back to the team. If I do well in IPL, it will be a good thing to happen. At the same time it's important I score runs even in domestic cricket and everywhere else I play. I've got a few matches to come now and I'll try and do the best in those series and take it from there."

All the best DK. I pray to god for a good fortune with DD as a captain most probably if not as a player and also to comeback to the Indian team roaring. Please make leaf out of Rohit how he has taken the responsibility and come back to Indian team with lots of run in IPL and other domestic tournaments. I am a huge fan of you like other million more. Have a go!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am very disappointed as a CSK supporter that they let go of all of their, except Ashwin, local boys. What is the point of calling it Chennai when none of the players are from the town. CSK big strength was they had a good pool of local boys in the past years when they won tournaments consecutively. Now they are all gone. Now it doesn;t matter to me if Chennai wins or Delhi wins.

Glad that DK got good money.

@Cpt.Meanster I remember karthik's early days in international cricket. No muscle to hit ball farther. He did well for MI for few matches last season but was a waste in previous seasons. Raydu has been a consistent player for Mi (although not a flashy batsman). Also you seem to have something against Corey Anderson. He is miles better than Levis. Give him a break.

That said i feel Karthik deserves a spot in ODIS.

Well. Rayudu will not be a captain of the team. DK will be the captain for the DD.

Dinesh karthik >>>>> parthiv patel. This auction proves real value. if dhoni never existed , DK would be permanent wicket keeper for india. :)

This can prøve to be good for DK's career to be in the spot light. This responsibility can give him the space to become a force in Indian cricket. I hope he makes the most of it. He will be missed at MI.

I wonder how much the players who were retained had agreed to before the auction. Virat Kohli for example would not have dreamt that Yuvraj would have gone for 14 crores so he would have signed for under 10 crores. I am pretty sure MSD makes 20 crores and should be highest paid player in IPL. The truth is players who were retained are also making huge money.

MI will under perform this year thanks to retaining a bunch of over hyped and mediocre players. DK is simply the BEST wicket keeper batsman in India after Dhoni. What a blunder ! They retained an ordinary player like Rayudu instead. This will hurt MI big time. Also, Corey Anderson is untested in Indian conditions and could end up like another Richard Levi. Good for DD though, their team looks formidable already along with KXIP. Good for the tournament this year. MI and CSK will be kicked out early. Time for the lesser teams to rise up !!
