George Bailey, Australia's T20 captain, will lead Kings XI Punjab in the IPL this season. Bailey will be the second Australian to lead Kings XI after Adam Gilchrist, who lead the franchise in the last two seasons before retiring last year.

Bailey was one of the four Australians purchased by the franchise at the players auction on February, along with Mitchell Johnson, Glenn Maxwell and Shaun Marsh. His price tag of Rs 3.25 crore ($531,000 approx) was fractionally more than Virender Sehwag, who was the bargain buy at Rs 3.2 crore ($522,800 approx).

According to Sanjay Bangar, the Kings XI coach, Bailey was the "unanimous choice", and only candidate considered by him and the franchise owners. Bangar pointed out the biggest factor that swung things in the favour of Bailey was his leadership pedigree.

Incidentally, in 2011 when the Australian selectors appointed him as the T20 captain, Bailey became only the second man since Dave Gregory in 1877, to lead the team in his first match for the country in any format.

"He was the unanimous choice. He has got success as a leader in the domestic tournaments like Sheffield Shield in Australia," Bangar told ESPNcricinfo. "He had also lead Australia in the Twenty20 format. And then the overall type of character he is, who can understand a range of players from the bigger names to ones that have limited ability. We are confident he has the ability to bring out the best from everyone."

Bailey, 31, previously played in the IPL for Chennai Super Kings for three years from the 2009 season, before being released in 2012. However, the presence of many allrounders forced Bailey to spend time in the dugout. In the three innings he managed, he scored 63 runs at a strike rate of 95.33.

Bailey has captained Australia in 24 T20Is and helped the team to 13 victories with good numbers: 435 runs at a strike rate of 146.95.

A man with a happy disposition during tense moments, Bailey has proved himself to be an aggressive middle-order batsman who can accelerate without much fuss. He was the top-scorer for Hobart Hurricanes who finished runners-up to Perth Scorchers in the Big Bash League final, a week before the auction.

"We required a player with past leadership experience. The second and crucial aspect was to have a player who was guaranteed a place in the team for all matches," Bangar said, adding the other elements that were taken into account before picking Bailey as the captain.

Bangar also pointed out that Bailey would obviously make use of a senior player like Virender Sehwag, who had led his previous franchise Delhi Daredevils in the past. "Within that group we would definitely like to utilise the experience of senior guys like Viru, who are bound to perform the role of mentors. But on the field Bailey will be the captain."

there is no substitute for Maxwell... he will b the key performer

Posted by   on (March 19, 2014, 14:33 GMT)

Last year Ricky Pointing was announced as the captain of MI in the beginning and we all saw what happened after that.. I am afraid 'if' Bailey won't perform 5-6 matches, he will be asked to sit and Sehwag will be the captain or Vohra ( since he was retained for 9cr, idk what they see in him ) My line up : Sehwag, Mandeep, singh, Manan Vohra, Bailey, Miller, Maxell/Marsh (if Marsh plays he shall open), Mitchell Johnsson, Rishi Dhawan, Saha/Gurkeerat (wk), Murli Kartik, Awana

People crying over Sehwag need to understand that he himself said he doesn't want to lead. Other than him, there was no one in the squad with any captaining experience so he is the only and the best choice. As for blocking an overseas slot, he is good enough to warrant it anyway, so it shouldn't be a problem. Miller and Johnson are the other two players who will be in the starting line-up. This leaves the last slot to be filled by Maxwell or Marsh. Perera is really too inconsistent to be a regular contender. While Marsh has done extremely well over the seasons, Maxwell adds a lot of versatility to the side. He can play anywhere in the top 7, accelerate much better than Marsh and also provides a spinning option which could be really helpful in the UAE. Marsh has also mostly played the anchor role for which they now have Pujara. So, I would start the tournament with Bailey, Miller, Johnon and Maxwell.

This Ipl 7 would be something for the overall stakeholders of Kings XI Punjab to remember..Appointment of Bailey as a captain for a T20 side is what most of the teams put in their wish list..Grt Decision...He is going to land this team in the Top Three this very season..No doubt about that...The only major problem would be the rotation of International Players...

OH !!! BAD Choice , Indian Should have been captained for kings x1 punjab , rotating foreign would have been easy , now its going to be little tough!! though Viru would have been best choice.. Anyway this year hes goona fire and get his spot back in Indian team , Good luck Viru

As a Kings XI Punjab fan i'm happy with the choice. But its going to be tough rotating between Perera, Marsh and Maxwell

Posted by   on (March 18, 2014, 5:56 GMT)

I feel sorry for Maxwell though. No doubt Bailey is a good choice but that just sidelines one of the seasoned campaigners of KXIP - Shaun Marsh and the best hitter in town - Glenn Maxwell. Because one of them will sit out for sure considering Johnson, Miller, Bailey will surely start. I'm happy that KXIP would offer a lot this season as they start as title favorites with the squad they have developed. And if Bailey rotates the squad efficiently around Marsh/Maxwell, I wouldn't be surprised if they lift the title this season.

no brainer. the best t20 leader and the best finisher in world cricket

Does anyone really care?

Posted by wapuser on (March 17, 2014, 18:50 GMT)

Bailey appointed skipper!! Yes! From the start of the auction, i had tboughts that either kxi or RR would buy appoint him as captain.. Now looking ahead to see whether he performs in tbe same way as he did in the last series in India..

"Kings XI Punjab" the team which had to play some of the unheard overseas players like Michael Nesser or Adrian Barath in the previous editions now might have to bench class players like Thisara Perera or Glenn Maxwell. Bailey's a perfect choice for a captain. The possible 11 could be: Sehwag, Mandeep, Shaun Marsh, Pujara, Bailey(c), Maxwell, Saha, Rishi Dhawan, Johnson, Murali Kartik, Balaji Looks like a strong one. Go Kings!!

Posted by   on (March 17, 2014, 17:47 GMT)

Playing 11 will be sehwag pujara vohra bailey maxwell miller saha jhonson dhawan / sandeep sharma balaji karthik

Posted by wapuser on (March 17, 2014, 17:28 GMT)

He was pretty much best and only choice .Captain of Aus Intl T20 team and a good batsman. Pity is they'll have to choose between marsh /maxwell .I would still pick marsh coz he has been KXIP highest scorer if u take all 6 seasons combined. Marsh Sehwag Pujara Bailey Miller Vohra/Mandeep Saha Dhawan Johnson Awana Kartik They may even choose maxwell over somebody though as there is no 5 th bowler or take play Dhawan at 7 bringing another bowler. Let's see if viru fires .If he doesn't he may have to sit on sidelines even though he is senior player.

Posted by   on (March 17, 2014, 17:27 GMT)

hands down choice...,, Miller,Bailey,Maxwell&johnson. ., are the 4 foreign players in the xi

@ Prem Kumar…and how does exactly Sehwag knows more about uncapped players? By just playing possibly one Ranji game against some of the players? Sehwag didn't even feature many Delhi games and I don't remember seeing his name in many zonal tournaments?

Posted by   on (March 17, 2014, 13:37 GMT)

bad move.......make sehwag as captain because he can knows more abt non capped indian players........and more over they can pick david miller mitchell johnson shaun marsh and thisara perara or glen maxwell

The One-Day series in India may have led to this decision. Not very surprising. The best thing about Knigs XI this year that they have almost the same Indian domestic core - Mandeep, Gurkeerat, Vohra, Awana. My 11 wud be - Saha, Pujara, Viru, Bails, Maxi, Miller, Akshar Patel, Mitch, R Dhawan, Murali Kartik, Awana ( provided Sehwag is niether opening nor bowling )

Posted by class9ryan on (March 17, 2014, 13:12 GMT)

Number 4,5,6 are decided - Bails, Maxi, Miller. Saha is the wicket-keeper - personally I'll love him in the top 3 on spin friendly conditions. Viru is certain. If Viru can give 2 overs regularly KXIP can actually go with likes of Mandeep, Pujara, Gurkeerat to fill rest of the top 7, if not they've Akshar Patel to fill in the all rounders void. Then there's a plethora of fast/medium fast options. Only thing lacking is a world class spinner but on tracks that may turn Murali Kartik knows his business. Overall, a side not to be seen in the shade of previous KXIP sides. Congrats Priety and Ness for developing such a side.

Good sehwag not the captain as he can play freely. This is his Last chance in all probability. For all I plan India return. Which looks impossible realistically.

hopefully Viru fires for them

He's a great choice as captain for the Kings XI.

His composure and calmness was evident when he was handed the captaincy role in his very 1st T20 match. And ever since then, I feel he has led the team well; 13 out of 24 games won is a good winning record in T20 considering the hit and miss nature of the game, and the fact that there never seems to be any consistency with T20 selections with players often being rested or trialled; not to mention how much time the T20 team spends together (on many occasions, they aren't even together for more than a week and because of that, I think the captain has a bigger responsibility to try to establish a team bond quick and fast).

And in a franchise environment, I think Bailey's ability to do just that i.e. bring together a group in a short amount of time and to get the most out of his players will be invaluable.

@Dan O'Toole - Maybe you should take a look at his figures in the last series against India on the flat pitches of India.

Good choice for captain. I think the ideal XI would be: Sehwag, Manan, Pujara, Bailey, Miller,Perera, Saha, Johnson, Dhawan, Kartik and Balaji

it would be nice to see baily as punjab's skipper.......as he could maintain the concistency...which will be a great factor for kings XI to win IPL....

My Favourite team this IPL edition is Kings XI for obvious reason Pujara is playing for them. Hope my favourite player plays most of the matches and prove himself it the shortest format also

Posted by BradmanBestEver on (March 17, 2014, 11:23 GMT)

He is a good slogger - but that is about it I am afraid - suitable IPL material

Posted by   on (March 17, 2014, 11:14 GMT)

good choice...go punjab

Posted by   on (March 17, 2014, 10:55 GMT)

Great leader; he was brilliant with Hobart Hurricanes last year. The T20 WC will be a good yardstick to measure his flat pitch form after the different (bouncy) pitches he's played on recently, which I guess will be the only ? on his abilities

Posted by   on (March 17, 2014, 10:19 GMT)

Good choice... Question is who will be the other 3 foreign players in playin XI... I think bailey, jhonson, miller and maxwell !!! Marsh will miss out who otherwise was an automatic choice... With veeru, pujara, mandeep, saha, awana nd murli this will be one team to beat with perfect combination of local, foreign, spin, pace nd allrounders !!! Go Punjab Go

Posted by ramz30380 on (March 17, 2014, 10:12 GMT)

No surprises there.... Kings XI this season have their best squad... in fact this season's IPL will be very exciting as all the teams are equally poised on paper - anyone can win it! Bailey was fantastic in his captaincy against Ind in the ODIs, obvious choice for captaincy... but he will need to handle Sehwag carefully... or best not handle him at all!!!!

Posted by   on (March 17, 2014, 10:03 GMT)

The ideal XI for Kings XI would be : 1. Viender Sehwag 2. Cheteshwar Pujara 3. Shaun Marsh 4. George Bailey 5. Glenn Maxwell 6. Wriddhiman Saha 7. Rishi Dhawan 8. Mitchell Johnson 9. Murali Kartik 10. L. Balaji 11. Sandeep Sharma

Posted by   on (March 17, 2014, 10:00 GMT)

With sehwag, bailey, jhonson and marsh. Kings XI Punjab will definitley be in the semi-finals.

Posted by xtrafalgarx on (March 17, 2014, 9:36 GMT)

He is a good leader, George Bailey and is also well recognised for this. There was an article by the name of "George who?" By Kimber. I think this proves people know just who George is.

Posted by   on (March 17, 2014, 9:33 GMT)

nice selection.. viru with you George don't worry...

Posted by santhoshg016 on (March 17, 2014, 9:16 GMT)

Good one.. no doubt George Bailey is an excellent skipper to lead Kings XI punjab. now sehwag can play his natural game.. he has no pressure on his shoulder.. he is not playing for Delhi and not captaining any side so this is the chance for Sehwag to show some explosive cricket has left with him.. Sehwag and Shanun Marsh will open the innings following him Bailey, Maxwell, and Johnson.. a Good team with some extemly hard hitters.. Best of luck KINGS XI PUNJAB

Posted by   on (March 17, 2014, 8:48 GMT)

this is the best news. I was hoping priety zinta,s team would choose him as captain. now you are serious contenders to win. he is an awesome captain and player. do Punjab well George,
