DD are a dangerous team this year and it seems people are ignoring them more out of fear than anything. I think RCB and DD will be the teams of this season. DD will play a fearless brand of cricket thanks to KP, their skipper. Plus, the team also has three talented South Africans Duminy, De Kock and Parnell. Also, how can we forget the dynamic Kiwi duo of Ross Taylor and Neesham ? Last but not least, their Indian contingent look highly skilled and versatile with the inclusion of DK and Murali Vijay. I feel DD can get to the playoffs for sure this year.

the ideal line up would be- vijay, karthik(wk),KP,Duminy,Taylor/de kock,Manoj Tiwari/shukla,Jimmy Neesham/coulter nile/parnell,Nadeem, Rahul Sharma, Shami, Unadkat

  • POSTED BY on | April 15, 2014, 13:25 GMT

This is a strong unit, but a lot will depend on how KP handles the captaincy. Apart from him and Ross, they lack any other big name players. That might hurt them.

  • POSTED BY on | April 15, 2014, 13:13 GMT

How are people forgetting de kock....he is a class player...can smack any attack out of the park...people are under estimating this dd line up...

  • POSTED BY SidsIPLTeam on | April 15, 2014, 10:50 GMT

Delhi Daredevils have put together a strange unit considering that they wanted to start afresh & had the entire 60 crore purse. Pietersen is the key figure but his fitness & match winning prowess has diminished a little in recent times. Even if he lifts his game like he can, still they have no backups in case he were to fail for a few matches. They should've gone after gun players like Anderson & Maxwell instead they went for Ross Taylor, who's probably past his T20 glory days & JP, who is at best handy but certainly not explosive. With only 8 teams playing in this years IPL, most of the teams look very strong. However, as it has panned out, one feels that DD is a little short on firepower, with an average spin & fast bowling cupboard, & lack of impact allrounders with Neesham struggling against spin. The Indian domestic players have to pulled their weight big time & be at their best for DD to have a realistic chance even with Kirsten's strategies. Best Wishes!!

DD I think will have to play Duminy. Without him, they would have only the bare minimum 5 bowlers - KP will need a safety net in case one of the regular bowlers is taking punishment. He can bowl himself of course but has always been reluctant to do so.

Ideal combinaton would be: Mayank, Murali Vijay, KP, Dinesh Karthik, Duminy, Manoj Tiwary, Neesham, Parnell/ Coulternile, Unadkat, Rahul Sharma/nadeem, Shami..

Manoj Tiwary wll be a key player for DD. I hope he gets his chance.

  • POSTED BY mohanram82 on | April 15, 2014, 6:50 GMT

play both ROSSCO & J.P coz foreign bowlers wont shine in subcontinent pitch.. we have shami and jaydev... even can include shukla.. but waste if added parnell and couternile, we all saw their bowling in bangladesh..

  • POSTED BY on | April 15, 2014, 5:59 GMT

They should defintely play Laxmi Shukla he has been sublime form with the bat this season. He will be a better option than Manoj and Saurav Tiwary, Mayank Agarwal and Kedar Jadav. His bowling has also been quite good bowled with a lot of fire and got important breakthrough he is also a very good fielder.

  • POSTED BY aby_97 on | April 15, 2014, 3:51 GMT

KP himself said that he isn't comfortable opening, So I think Dinesh Karthik is a suitable alternate as he has experience of opening before.. De Kock is a good batsman but they cannot keep out someone like a Parnell, who bowled really well in the Wt20 and nor they cud afford to keep out someone like a Jimmy Neesham.

  • POSTED BY Mr.CricketJKNotHussey on | April 15, 2014, 3:24 GMT

@Santosh Chaurasia I agree with that. Although I believe that Neesham will add more balance to the team, de Kock could do really well at the top. If de Kock plays, Shukla should slot in at 6/7. Also, this year, Miller was the top run scorer int he ramslam T20.

  • POSTED BY Mr.CricketJKNotHussey on | April 15, 2014, 3:22 GMT

Great squad. They can really do well this season. Considering KP is a sure shot pick for all matches barring injury, the other foreign players should be Coulter-Nile, Neesham and Duminy/Taylor. Coulter-Nile will partner Shami well and can thonk the ball far. Neesham adds the much needed balance to the team with his all-round skills. They can decide between Duminy and Taylor based on how much they need spin considering both are in great form. Nadeem and Rahul Sharma will need to play all matches, especially in the UAE. The squad could look like this: 1)Vijay 2)Aggarwal 3)KP 4)DK (wk) 5)Duminy/Taylor 6) Jadhav 7) Neesham 8)Coulter-Nile 9)Shami 10)Nadeem 11)Sharma

    DD in Batting Order 1. Q.DeKock, 2. M.Vijay, 3. D.Karthik, 4. K.Peterson, 5. (i)K.Jadhav / (ii)L.Shukla / (iii)M.Tiwary, 6. (i)R.Taylor / (ii)JP.Duminy, 7. S.Tiwary, 8. (i)J.Neesham / (ii)N.Coulter-Nile, 9. M.Shami, 10. (i)S.Nadeem / (ii)J.Unadkat 11. R.Sharma

Surprised to see DD won't have any all-rounders those are key in balance of the team. DD seems one dimensional team and to achieve something special their key players needs to be in great form. Have so many similar stroke makers that could leave the gate open for DD for shuffle later in the tournament if things does not go according to the plan. Q.DeKock has great talent but if he does not perform well against spin then there could be a change to bring M.Agarwal at #1 slot and keep both R.Taylor and JP.Duminy in the middle order at #5 and #6.

All the best DD for IPL 2014.

Author missed Kedar Jadhav. His form and batting is sure in before S Tiwary. DD may also go with Quinton de Kock rather Neesham on batting tracks and keeping Duminy in team to give right balance of Left, Right, Seam, Spin.

  • POSTED BY JRP100 on | April 14, 2014, 20:56 GMT

they have too many batsmen and not enough (or any really) class t20 bowlers. Shami was hit badly in the world t20 and kaul, shukla, unadkat and sharath are bad pacers even for indian pace bowling standards. Parnell too was hit in the world t20 and coulter nile is inconsistent, they'll probably need 170 everytime they come out to bat. Best 11 would be

Vijay, Agarwal, pieterson, DK, taylor, duminy, neesham/coulter nile/parnell, shami, kaul/shukla/unadkat, nadeem, sharma

batting should make up for poor bowling and spinners should be ok in the UAE.

Delhi Daredevils IPL 2014 preview April 14, 2014

Fresh start for Daredevils and Pietersen

The Preview by Alagappan Muthu
  shares 27

Play 05:50
Agarkar: Daredevils to make top four comfortably

Likely first XI

1 M Vijay, 2 Kevin Pietersen (capt), 3 Ross Taylor/JP Duminy, 4 Dinesh Karthik (wk), 5 Saurabh Tiwary, 6 Manoj Tiwary, 7 Jimmy Neesham/Nathan Coulter-Nile, 8 Wayne Parnell 9 Shahbaz Nadeem, 10 Mohammed Shami, 11 Rahul Sharma.

2013 finish

Last place. Began the season with a six-match losing streak and couldn't recover. It was their second wooden spoon.

Big Picture

Rebirth is the overwhelming theme of Delhi Daredevils this season. They have dispensed with a squad that succumbed during crunch moments and repaired that shortcoming by investing in Kevin Pietersen - a man reputed to unfurl his best when direly needed - as their captain and Gary Kirsten - a man who has a World Cup and the Test championship mace on his resume - as coach.

They also re-enlisted some old friends at the auction. Dinesh Karthik's 1741 runs are the most by an Indian wicketkeeper, barring MS Dhoni. He returned to his IPL roots and was such a priority for Daredevils that he ended up the second-highest buy of the season. Ross Taylor conveyed relief over being back in familiar surrounds, but he will face stiff competition from JP Duminy, whose comparatively lesser boundary-clearing ability is compensated by more than handy offspin. With Daredevils having recorded their two worst totals in IPL history in 2013, the trio's enterprise under pressure completes a settled batting line-up.

What Daredevils don't possess is depth in spin bowling, a resource that gained value during the World T20. Rahul Sharma and Shahbaz Nadeem are known more for their rigorous discipline than spitting turn and their eight overs gain further significance considering they have minimum back-up.

The fans might still pine for Virender Sehwag, but his unpredictability was decided to be too much of a luxury. In his stead comes M Vijay, another of the more successful openers in IPL. But it will be interesting to see how he fares on his first transfer away from Chennai Super Kings.

Big players

For someone who was ousted from international cricket, Kevin Pietersen is quite upbeat. He welcomed the challenge of captaincy, bolstered by the experience gained over a decade at the top-level. His ability is beyond question, but how would he combat four months' lack of match-practice, and a finger injury in the lead-up to the tournament?

"Promising, but wayward," sums up the Daredevils' seam attack. Mohammed Shami, who forms a crucial part of it, is a rare property in IPL cricket - an Indian fast bowler who actually is fast. He can also generate early swing, but has been known to come second best if the batsmen are willing to take him on.

Bargain buy

Ross Taylor is already eager to harness his good form over the New Zealand summer. A price tag of Rs 2 crore (US$ 333,000) seems a steal for a man who hit three consecutive Test centuries - including a maiden double - and two match-winning ODI tons on the trot in the last five months.

Availability

No international commitments on the horizon.

Quotes

"It's nice to come back to a franchise that I am familiar with. Going to three franchises in three years was a little disruptive."
Ross Taylor was not keen to get back on the road again

Odds

8/1 - sixth favourite, ahead only of Rajasthan Royals and Kolkata Knight Riders
