The Inagural match will be a cracker of the game strong words to be written on the wall from Gauti , Bhajji & Yousuf Pathan . Wishing the trio all the best !My Favourite in this match is KKR thats only due to Sunil Naryan .

  • POSTED BY Sammurai on | April 16, 2014, 12:40 GMT

Why cricinfo is not using the name IPL, instead using India T20 League? Hmmm.. on mission not to popularise the brand IPL or its new strategy? Will they do it same for Big Bash and CPL etc?

  • POSTED BY Steve92 on | April 16, 2014, 12:38 GMT

I think KKR overseas players are totally waste except narine.KKR going to lose once again. In these Ipl tournament kkr is one of the waste team.

  • POSTED BY on | April 16, 2014, 12:18 GMT

In today's match KKR definitely have a stronger spin attack and good Indian seamers. My playing XI would be 1. Gambhir 2. Kallis 3. Robin 4. Manish pandey/Deb Das 5. Yusuf Pathan 6. Chris Lynn 7. Shakib Al Hasan/ Ryan Ten 8. Piyush Chawla 9. Vinay Kumar 10. Sunil Nariane 11. Umesh Yadav. This team has all bases covered. Reliable top order and a very devastating middle and lower order which can tear any attack apart and a formidable spin attack along with good seamers which would suit the conditions in the UAE. Best of luck KKR.

  • POSTED BY on | April 16, 2014, 11:08 GMT

i dont know in all these edition of ipl what kallis did , not a single performance to remember , but in contrast hussy look always classy & in form player, kolkata missing fear factor like anderson & pollard , no bowler fears kallis these days or worry or no hype around him , so he should not be in playing 11 otherwise god save srk

  • POSTED BY on | April 16, 2014, 10:53 GMT

This time its really tough for MI. Neither they have the depth and the versatility in the team nor they will have the support they used to get. Half of the Indians were supporting Mumbai just because of Sachin's presence. I love MI and I want them to win but at the back of mind I get the feel that this time its not MI. Lets wait and watch...

MUM PLAYING 11 WILL BE in this order Michael Hussey , Aditya Tare , Ambati Rayadu , Rohit Sharma , Corey Anderson , Keiron Pollard , CM Gautam , Harbajan Singh , Lasith Malinga , Zaheer Khan , Pragyan Ojha

KEY PLAYERS : KKR : GAMBHIR, KALLIS , SUNIL NARINE MUM : ROHIT, HUSSEY , LASITH MALINGA

KKR has a better bowling attack than Mumbai and Mumbai has a more powerful batting attack than KKR. I THINK ITS gonna be more A MATCH BETWEEN KKR BOWLERS VS MUMBAI BATSMAN and given the conditions seems like KKR has the Edge .

Will one of these team able to through final against Chennai? My advise to both teams. Select all your super stars for this match and upcoming match but not against Chennai. Super stars never shines against Chennai. Select the uncapped players against Chennai those could shine definitely. Chennai is made up of Indian players except few foreign players. So, this idea will work out against them.

Best of luck of both team. I am waiting of the Major league to start.

  • POSTED BY avani on | April 16, 2014, 5:25 GMT

I think there is definitely some compulsion to change the name of the league and the teams. Either because of recent IPL management change or because of change of venue to UAE. If the latter is the reason then once the matches are moved back to India the real names may reappear. It was more enjoyable with old names. Hope they will be given that glory again soon.

KKR will definitely miss services of Eoin Morgan who was very consistent in the middle order last year. They'd hope that Chris Lynn delivers for them in that role although I fail to understand why they did not take focus on international batters a lot more and picked Lynn only at the end.Mi also have chinks of their own with too many wicketkeepers and over-reliance on Hussey now at the top. So it'll be an interesting game.

My Best 11 for KKR is 1.Gambhir,2.Uthappa,3.Kallis,4.Pandey,5.Pathan,6.Lynn,7.Shakib,8.Chawla,9.Vinay,10.Narine,11.Umesh. All the best KKR from Suresh.

    KKR in Batting Order 1. G.Gambir, 2. R.Uthappa, 3. J. Kallis, 4. M.Pandey, 5. C.Lynn, 6. Y. Pathan, 7. (i)SA.Hassan / (ii)A.Russel / (iii)RT.Doeschate / (a)M.Morkel / (b) P.Cummins, 8. P.Chawla, 9. V.Kumar, 10. S.Naraine, 11. U.Yadhav

KKR left key position open. M.Morkel / P.Commins could be more than handy at any condition but by selecting him KKR might lose some strength in batting order as the might remove C.Lynn and shuffel the batting order to open with #2 M.Bisla and keep R.Uttappa in #5. 7th position can be selected / floated based on pitch condition.

All the best KKR for IPL 2014.

    MI in Batting Order 1. M.Hussy, 2. A.Tare, 3. R.Sharma, 4. A.Rayudu, 5. K.Pollard, 6. (i)J.Saxena / (ii)C.Goutham 7. C.Anderson, 8. H.Singh, 9. Z.Khan, 10. L.Malinga 11. P.Ojha

Krishmar Santokie is good option inplace of Zaheer. But MI does not have any local player in the caliber of good batting to leave out Anderson or M.Hussey to bring Santokie in.

All the best MI for IPL 2014.

i dont understand people commenting kkr is weak and having shakib, tendo play ahead of chris lynn seriously?? what good it will to batting line up as long as we have kallis we dont another fast bowling allrounder and as long as we have chawla, narine we dont need another spinner allrounder get lynn, strengthen batting no more allrounders other than kallis so lineup will read gambhir,uthappa,kallis,pandey,pathan,lynn,bisla/kuladeep/deb das,narine,chawla,morkel,umesh/vinay

  • POSTED BY D-Coach on | April 15, 2014, 15:38 GMT

Why ESPNCricinfo changed the IPL name into "Indian T20 League" and changed all the team names into city name on "Tournament Fixtures" as Mumbai, Delhi, etc. This does not sounds good the reality. Is there any issue Cricinfo is facing by using the correct name? If it is an innovative thought then it seems misleading. Please had back to the original name of team and the tournament.

Meanwhile all the best for both teams MI and KKR to produce a cracking opening game.

  • POSTED BY Baundele on | April 15, 2014, 15:18 GMT

KKR should select players on their form, not on their names. That means Shakib and RTD must play and bat up the order, ideally at #3 and #4 respectively. Kallis and Pathan should be used only if they are in form. KKR has got abundance of bowling options, both spin and pace. Dropping Kallis would accomodate a big hitting middle order like Chris Lynn. However, it is likely that neither Shakib nor RTD will get a game untill the KKR is on the brink of elimination. Chris Lynn will probably play; but would not get much overs to bat, since Kallis will spend sometime at the top.

  • POSTED BY android_user on | April 15, 2014, 14:47 GMT

Kkr has a weak batting this season. Ten Doeschate has saved KKR's face a lot of time. I want to see him in the playing xi cuz he can bowl medium pace and bat. Kkr has a lot of raw pace this season. They nid rajat bhatia's replacement which is Doeschate when it comes to bowling. Mi are well settled but they nid to play the slower bowlers well. Anderson, Pollard, Tare and Rayudu nid to step up against the slower bowlers. The match will be decided on the batsmen on how much they can score on the pitch which has a history of strings of low scores. Im an ardent KKR supporter nd i really want Doeschate to play from the start of the season.

  • POSTED BY MikR on | April 15, 2014, 14:46 GMT

I really hope Ryan ten deoschate plays. He is a quality T20 player and a very handy middle order batsman. He plays T20 in nearly all countries and i really think KKR should use his expertise. Best KKR line up- Pandey, Gambhir, Kallis, Deoschate, Uthappa, Yusuf Pathan, Shakib Al Hasan, Chawla, Vinay Kumar, Narine, Yadav. If the pitch helps fast bowlers then Morkel/ Cummins should get picked for Shakib, but most of the time UAE pitches are similar to India.

looking at the teams mumbai is superior on paper. bowling might cancel out but its the batting of MI which is more superior than kkr . the biggest problem for KKR this season will be to find out the right combo. they have so many options for a particular job.if things dont go right in start, it would be a long tournament for them. IMO they should play ryan ten and al hasan both. they made a huge mistake last year by benching ryan. 1.gambhir 2. uthappa 3.kallis 4. yusuf 5. s al hasan 6.ryan tendoeschate 7.pandey 8. chawla 9.vinay 10. narine 11. yadav

I still m a big fan Ryan ten deoschate. if kkr r to win thy hace to give him bigger role. ask him to bat at 4 as specialist batsmen and u will see d result. and kkr can leave morkel out and play kallis saqib narine and ten do as 4 foreign players.

gambhir uthappa pandey bisla piyush varun Umesh forms Indian core.

  • POSTED BY on | April 15, 2014, 14:18 GMT

i think MI have better chance of winning this match over KKR. Huss will give his 100% for the team without worrying his age. Narine will be the only headache for the MI and only hope for the KKR. if you manage to play without giving wickets to the nrine, then you wil win the match. Everyone worrying about MI's depth, but they have MATCH WINNERS !!!!! good luck Mumbai lads !

Big Picture

Just over a month ago, the IPL was still looking for a venue, thanks to the Indian federal elections. Three weeks ago, there were question marks over whether the tournament will take place at all, thanks to the IPL corruption case being heard by the Supreme Court.

Wednesday will be a big day for the IPL, not just because the first match of the season gets underway in the evening in Abu Dhabi, but also because the next court hearing is in the morning in Delhi.

The vast majority of IPL fans are likely to be interested only in the on-field action, when defending champions Mumbai Indians take on Kolkata Knight Riders. Attendance numbers hardly took a hit even when three Rajasthan Royals players were arrested midway through the previous season. The news has been relentlessly bad since the previous season, but that doesn't seem to have affected ticket sales in the UAE. The tournament also provides fans in the region a rare chance to watch Indian stars in action, after an eight-year absence.

The Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi has not traditionally been a high-scoring venue - there have been nine Twenty20 internationals held so far, and only once has a team scored more than 168. That trend of low scores looks set to continue as Mumbai and Knight Riders have two of the better attacks in the tournament.

Mumbai retained five of their key players, and snapped up the reliable Michael Hussey - last season's highest run-getter - and flavour-of-the-season Corey Anderson, but their squad seems to lack the depth it had in 2013. Knight Riders have four core members of the squad from 2013 - Gautam Gambhir, Sunil Narine, Jacques Kallis and Yusuf Pathan. They have invested in Robin Uthappa and Australia's Chris Lynn, but the batting still looks a touch light.

Watch out for...

Both sides have a pair of spinners who have excelled at the IPL. Neither Harbhajan Singh and Pragyan Ojha may not find a regular place in the national team, but for Mumbai, they have been vital cogs for several years. Similarly, Sunil Narine and Piyush Chawla have flourished in the league, and should again prove difficult to contend with.

Both teams will look to 38-year-olds who have retired from Tests to provide the stability in the top order. Hussey was outstanding last season, but will age start to catch up with him? Jacques Kallis had a less than stellar season in 2013, but can he turn things around given his workload in international cricket has vastly reduced?

Stats and trivia

  • Knight Riders have beaten Mumbai only twice in 12 IPL matches.

  • Knight Riders are the franchise with the least number of centuries in the IPL - 1, the blockbuster 158 Brendon McCullum hit on the opening day of the inaugural season.
