Delhi Daredevils 167 for 6 (Karthik 56, Duminy 52*) beat v Kolkata Knight Riders 166 for 5 (Uthappa 55, Pandey 48) by 4 wickets
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details

Duminy an understated match-winner

The burning question for Delhi Daredevils was their mettle under pressure. They were on a losing streak that was now at seven matches across two seasons. They still had to contend with their biggest influence - Kevin Pietersen - being restricted to the bench. They had to best one of the wilier attacks in the IPL, which believed - at 167 - it had enough to defend. However, fifties from stand-in captain Dinesh Karthik and new recruit JP Duminy took them home in an emphatic flurry.

The Daredevils captain was on the receiving end of a snorter from Albie Morkel in the last match, but today he was at his busy best. He nudged those singles and twos, his footwork against spin was precise and more importantly he held the chase together until Duminy arrived at No. 5 and took Morne Morkel for 21 runs in the 18th over to shift the balance.

Sunil Narine was Knight Riders' go-to man again, gamely delivering a 19th over that allowed only six runs to leave the equation at run-a-ball. The pressure shifted to Piyush Chawla who beat Jimmy Neesham with a legbreak that didn't turn, and then snapped him up with a seam-up delivery. Duminy hared across to the other end so that he was on strike, and belted another quick delivery over square leg to take the honours with three balls to spare.

A big target requires some risks at the top and can sometimes contribute to wickets without much doing from the bowlers. M Vijay was one such casualty when his search for a non-existent single resulted in his run-out. Ross Taylor could not get going for a second game in a row, and was undone by an offcutter from Jacques Kallis. Daredevils, though, still managed a quick start, thanks to Mayank Agarwal's 26 off 14, which ensured the Powerplay fetched 49 runs.

Karthik and Duminy got together with 107 needed off 13 overs, and began milking the spinners. Narine was kept back until the 11th over, by which time Karthik had a measure of the situation. His strike rate spent only two balls under 100 as he trusted his nurdles on either side of the wicket to keep the score ticking. Chawla's first over highlighted Karthik's range against spin when he carted a six over square leg, and then cut a four through point. A languid four over extra cover brought up his fifty, and was probably the shot of the match.

Duminy was at his innovative best. His first boundary was a scoop over the keeper. He would need to pull out his finishing skills. He lost Karthik in the 15th over, Manoj Tiwary could only last six balls, and Knight Riders scented a turnaround with 40 needed off the final four overs.

It was then that Duminy exploded. Morne Morkel had set up Knight Riders' victory on Wednesday with a brutal first spell. His pace and lift was just as troublesome to deal with today as he claimed two wickets, but at the crunch he almost seemed to play into Duminy's hands. A length ball, a short one and a full toss were blitzed for four, six and six.

Pace on ball might have let Knight Riders down at the crucial moment, but it worked for Daredevils when asked Nathan Coulter-Nile and Jaydev Unadkat to join Mohammed Shami. The pitch might have been slow, but under lights the ball began to seam.

Mohammed Shami exploited it in the first over to hand Jacques Kallis his ninth duck, and mark him as the specialist batsman with the most ducks in the tournament. Gautam Gambhir, was still searching for his first runs this season, when he tucked one off the hip, straight to leg gully, to join Kallis at nine ducks.

Manish Pandey and Robin Uthappa rebuilt the innings with a 64-run partnership, telling themselves the release was around the corner. Uthappa survived a scare Taylor dropped him on seven. Even though Pandey fell in the 11th over, Uthappa, assisted by cameos from Shakib Al Hasan and Suryakumar Yadav, set up a total that visibly energised the Knight Riders' dug-out at the innings-break. But Daredevils just wanted it more.

When a team score 160+ the match is always in hands of the captain i.e. how effective he is gonna use his strike bowlers. In case of KKR, it was SN and MM but no one bowled when DK as well as JP were new at the crease. Its pretty simple.

More improtantly, great to see improvement in KKR's batting. Despite GG & JK failure still they managed to score ...kudos & this is worth watching even in the future.

Weak link, PC...still wondering why they pciked him who has been hit for maximum sixes in IPL history?? Use any one, either sayan mondal or K Yadav for the whole season...give these youngsters a chance. we have seen enough of PC through IPL history, never improved

SH is also an excellent bowler that is why he is ranked #1 Allrounder in world T20. Give him confidence and play the whole season. Basically SH and MM are also wicket taking bowlers provided given confidence

Appreciate, they r sticking to YP but utilize his bowling when SH is bowling & promote him against pace attack matchs

Why someone like Quinton de Kock is not playing for delhi,he is the best opener for them

Posted by Ain_EL_Sabet on (April 20, 2014, 17:22 GMT)

@ black_bird, you say kkr lost only becuz sakib gave away too many runs and did not score good runs. Fyi, morkel's econ was 10.25, chawla's econ was 10.80 , vinay kumar's 8.75 and shakib's 8.33. Why pick only shakib to blame for leaking too many runs ? Actually everybody except narine was more or less expensive and shakib was atleast better than 3 ballers in terms of leaking runs. As for batting, only 3 kkr batsmen made runs and everybody else flopped. Shakib was one of those 3 and his strike rate was better than the other two, not to mention he remained not out. To me , kkr lost due to gambhir captaincy and shakib is way better captain than gambhir so gambhir should take some tips from shakib how to place fielders for each baller and when to choose which baller. Perhaps your comment had nothing to do with cricket rather the fact that shakib is Bangladeshi.

kkr batting line up should be -

gg, jk, mp, yp, ru, yadav, sh, pc, sn, mm, vk

bowling - thiss should be the allowed quota of overs

jk - 3 mm - 4 sn- 4 sh - 3 pc - 3 vk - 3

Gautam's captaincy in this game is the worst I have seen in this year's IPL. His decisions about when to bowl Narine and his field placements for Narine cost his team the match as well as how, when and even if to bowl Chawla and play Pathan. He should drop himself.

Posted by TSJ07 on (April 20, 2014, 11:01 GMT)

As an KXIP fan I am so happy to Piyush Chawla to play for other teams this season and not for my fav team! Key is to finish his quote of 4 overs before 15 overs o/w he would leak runs after 15th over.

"Small man with tramendous bat Speed." Clearly,, this inning of JP D is the best inning in this IPL. Also One of the best Six hit by JP so far. Really he is a good player with good sense same thing for KARTIK. BEST OF LUCK DD..

@black_bird: You must be leaving in a fool's world. How can it help when you misfield and let the ball dribble through your legs for four, and then you blame Shakib for bowling? And don't make me laugh by saying he should take tips from Gambhir on batting; that man has been out of form terribly with back to back ducks; and besides Shakib batted with a greater strike rate than the big hitting specialist Yusuf Pathan. How can you blame him entirely for the game when there was Gambhir's poor captaincy (yeah letting Narine bowl all the overs after the 11th over instead of in 7th over when Karthik was new at crease and would have surely struggled). Learn to assess the game instead of blaming someone pointlessly.

KKR Played well. I would like to point out 3 Critical aspects of KKR's game, which needs improvement: 1. Greater aggression during batting power play of first 6 overs - Lets open with with Kallis & Pandey, followed by GG, Uthappa, Shakib, Pathan. Yadav 2. During KKR's middle over bowling with quality spinners, please have at least 4 attacking fielders within the circle to stop easy singles - This is a must to build up pressure on the batting side 3. Who should bowl the last 4 overs ? Let's stick with Morkel and lend him confidence - Let him bowl the 17th Over followed by ... 18th by Chawla ... 19th by Kallis & 20th by Narine. This was a 180+ pitch ... IMO even DD batted badly, even though they won the match by a whisker !!!

Posted by Shajahan.P on (April 20, 2014, 8:31 GMT)

Best DD xi would be, Mayank, DeKock,DK,KP,Dumini,M Tiwari,S Tiwari,Nadeem,Nile,Shami,Unadkat

Posted by black_bird on (April 20, 2014, 8:04 GMT)

Shakib is the only reason why kkr lost. When other bowlers vinay, morkel bowled superbly. He just gave away too many runs. and did not score good runs. Please take some tips from gambhir, how to bat and bowl.

Posted by   on (April 20, 2014, 8:04 GMT)

KKR have been reduced to a 10 man team with Gautam Gambhir contributing nothing. It's about time he comes up with a big score.

Posted by   on (April 20, 2014, 7:39 GMT)

Those who are blaming Pathan, i think they dont have sense OR they dont know about cricket, how many balls he played, actually he should bat on no.4 or 5 then you will see what he can do, last match he got 4 Balls, and this Match also he came when 3 Overs was remaining. he faced 8 Balls, so think first before Criticise someone, he is good Cricketer and he will be back soon with hard hitting, just wait and watch,

Delhi keep on playing...the cup is yours...

Posted by   on (April 20, 2014, 6:36 GMT)

Duminy played an innovative innings that his compatriot AB De Villiers would have been proud of.

Posted by   on (April 20, 2014, 6:29 GMT)

Gambhir shuld cum bck in form as fast as pssble...to make a gud score of 185-190+ den nly bowlers can do sum decent wrk...160-165 isnt gud engh score to protect...

Posted by   on (April 20, 2014, 6:06 GMT)

umesh yadav got every opportunity in DD . now in KKR he will be warming d bench like evry other talented player KKR has. nevr understood d team selection policy of kkr yadav is far better bowler than vinay kr on any day

Posted by   on (April 20, 2014, 5:41 GMT)

tell me one player's name who can replace shakib in this position. I mean in KKR team. I did not find any better player than him. he is no one Allrounder for last 3 or 4 years. @niazbhi

Posted by thecutiepie on (April 20, 2014, 5:40 GMT)

Lacking of courage is shown in Gambhir's captaincy. He should be more attacking in his tactics. He shouldn't get batsman chance to settle in and then bring Narine. Narine should be introduced earlier in the bowling attack and Sakib should be used a bit more later. But Sakib should be given 3 or 4 batting position, in that position he plays good. Pat Cummins should give a chance instead of morkel. And Iusuf Pathan........ get him out. Don't the KKR side wait enough for him to come in form? Young player like Suryakumar Yadav should be given his batiing position.

Posted by   on (April 20, 2014, 5:40 GMT)

Wow. Great start did really won it for DD. So sad KKR. Better luck next time

Posted by DaisonGarvasis on (April 20, 2014, 5:32 GMT)

If anybody was asking why Gambhir is not in Indian team, he gave clear answer yesterday. The way he got out against Delhi was ridiculous!!! They had kept a fielder at short-fine-leg for him to flick he back to him. What does he do? Flcik the catch to him!!! If he wants to put claim for a place in Team India, such dispmissals cannot happen. Period.

Posted by pull_shot on (April 20, 2014, 5:32 GMT)

Can't understand dd not giving chance to Jadav he is good player especially in shorter format better than agarwal

Posted by   on (April 20, 2014, 5:01 GMT)

When kp comes back he should replace ross taylor and dk should play at 4 and kp at 3. And they should drop neesham and play laxmi ratan shukla at no7 and play both coulter nile and wayne parnell ,that will make their bowling a lot strengther.

Posted by   on (April 20, 2014, 4:59 GMT)

Sehwag doesnt have age by his side and gambir has age by his side but not the runs. It is true, but we have to move on..

Posted by   on (April 20, 2014, 4:48 GMT)

KKR shud have atleast put pressure on karthik and duminy by getting narine for one over atleast. Also Gauti missed the plot when Manoj Tiwary came in and the very first ball he edged for 4. Slip is a necessary thing when d opposition is chasing well and a new batsmen is in and your best spinner is bowling. DD got a good start from Mayank and a good finishing from Duminy. Batting to get stronger once KP comes in and probably Ross Taylor will sit out. Good prospects for DD in the later stages of the tournament.

Posted by   on (April 20, 2014, 4:23 GMT)

Good Cricketer Shakib Al Hasan Kolkata Knight Riders.

Posted by   on (April 20, 2014, 3:32 GMT)

No wonder on Karthik s ability. He has shown his mettle last IPL when he played for Mumbai which has awarded him whopping 12 crore. Duminy of course is a match winner. Imagining KP along with them it is final guaranteed for DD this time. But what they miss is they need a good spinner

Posted by j4884 on (April 20, 2014, 3:22 GMT)

Poor captaincy from Gambhir by selecting Vinay Kumar again. Vinay Kumar has proved expensive time and again but still he is selected. He just does not have the pace or the variation to trouble the batsman. Meanwhile Umesh Yadav who can bowl 145+ with swing is warming the benches...

Posted by Anurag_Chandak on (April 20, 2014, 2:00 GMT)

Though Delhi have won this one, Kedar Jadhav should definitely come in the XI in place of Manoj Tiwari. They need his striking skiils in lower middle order.

Posted by niazbhi on (April 20, 2014, 1:56 GMT)

KKR team has one big asset thats Narine. Sakib is not as big of an asset because they already have one foreign spinner, india has plenty of spinners (Chahal, Jakati, Misra, Ohja, Rahul, Abdullah). Sakib is an allrounder but his batting could be easily compensated. For many 20/20 teams the 7th batsman may not be that important. Many IPL teams wanted to keep two excellent indian batmen (Raina, Dhoni, Kohli etc type) and then compliment it with a foreign high SR bat (Peterson, Maxwell, Gayle, Maccullam type) and one good foreign pace bowling allrounder (Watson, Bravo, Anderson, Faulkner type) and one spot for a fast bowler (like Malinga, Johnson, Styen etc type). KKR has to be build their team that way. Struggling Ghamvir at the top would do nothing when Duminy, Maxwell, Smith, etc are running away with the game. KKR bowling is not that great. It was better last year. Narine is great. You need another good one (Morkel is ok, I wish they took Hendricks or Abbott),

Posted by Mr.CricketJKNotHussey on (April 20, 2014, 1:56 GMT)

Taylor needs to sit out once KP comes back. Neesham could also be swapped for Parnell, he did well the other day. Jadhav needs to make his way into the squad. But great win by DD.

Posted by   on (April 20, 2014, 1:06 GMT)

Kallis, Gambhir, Vijay, Kohli, Yuvi! What is common among all these great players. On a weekend (Saturday) they all would like to share a delicious Bombay Duck" -- a dish disappearing fast.

Posted by   on (April 20, 2014, 0:03 GMT)

Well Sakib did his part. As a Tiger fan I can solace in that.

Posted by Kruns on (April 19, 2014, 22:22 GMT)

Great Show from DK and JP excellent lads keep going.... I think Delhi Punjab and RCB are the teams to beat this Season....

My pick for four playoffs team would be 1) Punjab 2) Delhi 3) RCB and 4) RR

Posted by   on (April 19, 2014, 21:58 GMT)

Gambhir should've used Narine earlier; the run rate was way too high by the time he was introduced into the attack, leaving the batsmen the option to play him out...

Posted by   on (April 19, 2014, 21:08 GMT)

I thought they were weak but DD surprised me with the way they chased against this team. But if KKR win a few in UAE their 3 spinners will wreck havoc in Eden Gardens!

Posted by Jimmyvida on (April 19, 2014, 20:32 GMT)

GAYLE'S team won without him and KP'S team won without him. What in cricket's name is going on? YUVI, India's greatest, had two chances to make a duck. I am baffled.

Posted by Jimmyvida on (April 19, 2014, 20:25 GMT)

70 odd % of Indians voted Yuvi the best. Looking forward to tour of England, bring back Sehwag and Gambi, with Yuvi, Pathan and Khan. Drop those useless young players. Remember, losing overseas is a fact like waking up in the morning. Together with these 5, we add Kohli, Dhoni, a leg spinner, a left arm spinner, Inshant and another fast bowler. a 12th man to carry drinks. Keep the rest at home.

As usual JP Duminy came as the saviour for DD and also proved himself as a reliable finisher and helped in ending the Win Droughts !

Though Dinesh Karthick did a good job, he went crashing, trying a suicidal reverse sweep against Sunil Narine at the vulnerable situation.

Finally Duminy did his job in a game of fluctuating fortunes, enabling their first win in IPL 7. Let me hope KP recovers fast and contribute his mite for his Team to do better in this edition !

i think umpire decision is reach to delhi win when jp duminy is lbw against vinay kumar

Posted by fr600 on (April 19, 2014, 18:47 GMT)

More like Morkel did. KKR needs a better captain though.

Posted by Greatest_Game on (April 19, 2014, 18:27 GMT)

JP Duminy. Back to back fifties. Most runs so far in the tournament - 119 @ SR 143.37, and not yet dismissed. (Essentially has the highest average.) Has hit the most sixes. Twice has come in early for a #5 - 5th over & 7th over -and anchored the innings, rotating the strike, keeping the scoreboard ticking over, and then finished like a whirlwind. Deservedly Player of the Match in DD's only win, as he clearly kept his head and won it for them.

Simple question. Why not bring him at number 3? Is it because DD expect to lose early wickets anyway? Seems to make sense to bring him in earlier to do the job he is already doing so well. Not being 5 or 6 wickets down would give him a little more freedom, to defend less & attack more as he plays out the innings. If the players in front of him are failing, it is a waste for him to burdened by that. He is the consistent, form batsman. Play him where he will have the maximum effect!

Posted by   on (April 19, 2014, 18:23 GMT)

it was awesome match jp is saviour for DD wht a finisher it was nail biting.

Posted by   on (April 19, 2014, 18:16 GMT)

Karthik and Duminy played really well for DDl........all eyes on Narine when KKR bowling but can't save the matches by a one and only bowler.

I had asked, and I'll keep asking: why is Yusuf Pathan in playing XI??? He was great during his peak , but now, he looks like he does not deserve his inclusion

Posted by JRP100 on (April 19, 2014, 17:08 GMT)

surely delhi will drop taylor for kp and neesham for parnell next game. Taylor isn't good enough in ipl anymore and neeshams had 2 horrible outings with the ball. Agarwal is too inconsistent as well, probably best to drop him if he performs badly next game for saurabh tiwary or jadhav. 1 vijay 2 agarwal 3 kp 4 dk 5 duminy 6 tiwary 7 parnell 8 coulter nile 9 shami 10 sharma 11 nadeem/unadkat
