Hattangadi: Super Kings should play Badree

Big Picture

When Chennai Super Kings captain MS Dhoni was asked after the Kings XI Punjab game if he thought 205 was a winning score, he replied matter-of-factly: "Well even if you score 205 you also have to take into account that the other team can beat it." On most days, teams would back themselves to defend 205 but Super Kings were vanquished with such force that the game did not go into the final over. Super Kings should not be too hard on themselves though, for they were beaten by an incredible and audacious innings from Glenn Maxwell and a clinical fifty from David Miller. The bowlers could do little to stop Maxwell's reverse sweeps, switch-hits and lap shots; Super Kings would have needed five more fielders to plug those boundaries. Not every team has a batsman who can play such blinders.

Having said that, there are weaknesses in the Super Kings' bowling. Save for Ashish Nehra, who bowled three overs, the rest conceded more than ten an over. That should call for the inclusion of the West Indies legspinner Samuel Badree, who has a miserly T20 economy rate of 5.08. Super Kings may not let go of Dwayne Smith or Brendon McCullum to accommodate him, which means that one of Faf du Plessis and Dwayne Bravo will have to make way.

Delhi Daredevils are still waiting on Kevin Pietersen's fitness. Pietersen was missed in the opening game when the top order fell early. In both matches, they have depended on JP Duminy to shore up the batting. Their seam bowlers made early inroads against Kolkata Knight Riders, and with the next game being played under lights, they could have more assistance from the conditions. Their win over Knight Riders should be a morale booster after a listless opening game.

Watch out for

Ravindra Jadeja leaked 43 off four overs against Kings XI and in his last five competitive games (from the World T20), he has picked up only one wicket. He has also played just one innings since the start of the World T20. With Super Kings possessing a strong top order, he may not get too many opportunities to bat, which means that he has only his bowling to fall back on. The lack of wickets might worry him.

Jimmy Neesham was expensive in both games for Daredevils, bowling two overs in each and going for 0 for 26 and 0 for 22. Neesham had a good Champions League in 2013, but hasn't made an impact yet in the IPL. Should Pietersen be fit, one of the overseas players will have to make way so there is pressure on him to keep his place.

Stats and trivia

  • The last time Daredevils beat Super Kings in the IPL was in 2012. They have lost four matches to Super Kings since then.

  • M Vijay, now with the Daredevils, is the only Indian batsman to have scored more than one century in the IPL - he has two.

Posted by ssenthil on (April 21, 2014, 14:06 GMT)

So No more Bravo for 4 to 5 Weeks, that effectively rule out his most participation in the IPL. Now what Dhoni will do is to be seen. I m clad Dhoni was put in a situation like this and at the same time sad to see Bravo is injured and out for 5 weeks. Hope he recovers well.

All the best MSD and CSK ....DD

Posted by   on (April 21, 2014, 11:45 GMT)

in the last game we were outplayed by KXIP but MS will come with new plans especially in the bowling and fielding... jaddu always conceds runs but he picks wickets , Nehra did a fyn job but mohit and negi to be questioned... i would perfer ishwar pandey in place of mohit and maybe matt hendry for faf/bravo and baba for negi

Posted by cricxxx on (April 21, 2014, 11:42 GMT)

CSK will go for Extra spinner badree insted of injured Bravo.

Posted by   on (April 21, 2014, 11:28 GMT)

CSK need Badreeeeeee!!!!!!

Posted by   on (April 21, 2014, 11:27 GMT)

During the IPL Auction there were so many opportunities for CSK to pick some quality bowlers but they did not make any effort. They should have taken Santokie who went on his base price. Also no bid for Bollinger. They should have opted for him. Also few New Zealand bowlers that were available, CSK did not bother to bid for them. CSK did not pick SL and Eng players since they may not be available for the entire season which is understandable but they could have picked some West Indians. No takers for Kemar Roach and Jerome Taylor. They could have gone for at least one of them. We need a strong Fast Bowler in CSK which is lacking. I wish them all the best in this edition of IPL. CSK has to work hard since all other teams have done well by signing very good players to match the skills of CSK. So, CSK has to improve their performance to beat them. All the best CSK!!!

Posted by nothingnew on (April 21, 2014, 11:24 GMT)

Hope today Kevin would play for DD . and Talyor would be out of team . Hope DD win the match . CSK doesn't have good bowling attack . If top order failed they would lost definetely . nothign to worry .DD would rock today .

Posted by sazzad-BD007 on (April 21, 2014, 10:52 GMT)

today hope that CSK will come like a sand storm in desert nation and delhi away ....MSD nd his boys will end up winning

Posted by   on (April 21, 2014, 10:39 GMT)

Hope Delhi plays Laxmi Shukla today he has been in scorching form this season with the bat with the ball he has been tight and electric in the fields

Posted by moscowman on (April 21, 2014, 10:20 GMT)

It is a surprise that CSK never got any good bowler for them in the latest auction!! I find only Hilfenhaus in the list, and he was not played. This year the going will be tough and CSK, may for once, not reach the knock-out stage if they do not buck up.

Posted by   on (April 21, 2014, 10:05 GMT)

it will be high scoring game ms will win the toss and will field 200 will b easily chased by csk

Posted by VishalRanjan on (April 21, 2014, 10:04 GMT)

Chennai has to strengthen their bowling line up or ensure their power packed batting line up get a chance to chase and they better chase down whetever target set by opponent!!

Posted by Cricketfan11111 on (April 21, 2014, 10:04 GMT)

CSK has 4current international captains in the squad, Dhoni, MacCullum, Faf and Bravo. Smart choices by the management. Hope bravo is fit. Teams need few matches to find the correct combination of the players in the teams. KXIP is sizzling at the moment thanks to M&M. MI is the most struggling. Hope all the teams come to the party soon and give us exciting six weeks.

Posted by anver777 on (April 21, 2014, 9:50 GMT)

Its interesting to see how Murali Vijay will perform against his former team CSK !!!

Posted by ramz30380 on (April 21, 2014, 9:41 GMT)

Sone tough criticisms - CSK has risen its performance to tht level tht ppl xpct the team to win everytime its on the park! Its still early days - CSK has played only one match - CSK and MI have always been bad starters but these two teams will be the ones to have the last laugh! SO lets wait and watch - All the best boyz in yellow! Go out there and enjoy the game! Wud love to watch Ishwar Pandey though!

Posted by mishaq on (April 21, 2014, 9:37 GMT)

will be a cracker of the game tonight Hope CSK will do the bset and second please tell me about Fantasy league game how to play

Posted by ravin_cricluv on (April 21, 2014, 9:17 GMT)

CSK is IPL's Australia.so even one reasonable defeat is criticized a lot.that shows the expectation on the team.CSK will surely get the cup and its will be better than the other 2 cups because all teams this year are equally balanced.

Posted by ravin_cricluv on (April 21, 2014, 9:11 GMT)

considering all used pitches in UAE, bowlers have less to prove.that means CSK 's bowling issue will not matter at all.but Chennai's formula to get a 60 odd in the first 10 overs and accelerate at 10 a over in the next 10 overs will not help this time as its proven 200 is a par score in those pitches.so dhoni ,please make sure too many dots are not made and use the extraordinary batting potential we have.once we are in to indian pitches chennai's spin formula will be the best bowling attack compared to any other team. so my prediction is Chennai gets the cup this season with more number of wins than in any other previous seasons.

Posted by nikkam on (April 21, 2014, 9:00 GMT)

CSK should choose bowlers based on conditions...Definitely faf is wasted with an aggressive opening combo and many indian batsmen will not get a chance a bat...hence picking allrounders and bowlers can balance the team better...Bravo is also not fully fit....hence two overseas options opens up for MSD...ignoring the temptation of including badree...jhon hastings or matt henry can be included...CSk always had middle order pace bowling allrounders such as albie and bravo, which might not be possible at present...too many batsmen...both aparajith and jadeja are wasted...Iswar pandey might be a good choice...and smith can be used for medium pace bowling....these are early days and once coing back to india, spinners would be included..what about Hilfenaus??...definitely a good option for bravo...my choice for the team would be...mcullum, smith, raina, MSD, jadeja/aparajith, ashwin, negi, pandey, hastings, hilfenaus, mohit.

Posted by   on (April 21, 2014, 8:50 GMT)

CSK is one of the best team in the comp over the years not only cose it has big names, team environment, team spirit, fans support, way they support each other is incredible. Not only because of dhoni or bravo or ashwin playing in it. I can bet after dhoni and company retire from ipl still CSK have a big fan base. we can expect a quality cricket from CSK as always in this season too.

It is so early to comment about the performance of CSK in 1 match

Posted by   on (April 21, 2014, 8:08 GMT)

MY CHOICE CSK PLAYER 11= 1. B McCullum 2. D Smith 3. S Raina 4. MS Dhoni 5. D.Bravo 6.R Jadeja 7. R Ashwin 8. B.Aparajith 9. S Badree 10. I Pandey 11.A.Nehra.

If bravo is injured then bring in John Hastings because its allrounder.......I think mohit sharma & negi dropped by today match.....Badree,Jadeja,Ashwni....three are quality Spinners......S Raina,B.Aparajith-part time spinner........A.Nehra,I Pandey,D.Bravo/John Hastings, D Smith------seamer option.....i think......That's best team.

Posted by   on (April 21, 2014, 8:03 GMT)

Punjab has shown if u have a good squad with maximum numbers of match winners any team can do what CSK has been doing in the last 6 years....I feel CSK has lost its charm they are not the same team....MI n CSK were always on top of the chart when it comes to big buys but its different this time around, just love the idea of having budget of 60c....in the past teams like MI, KKR, CSK n DD with enough money in the bank use to run away with all the big players and that made the contest one side most of the time....this years's IPL is probably the best ever..All the teams are well balanced ..exceptions being Punjab n RCB they are the teams to beat and I have no doubt one of them will take the cup...my top 4 KKR SRH PUNJAB N RCB....WITH OUTSIDE CHANCE FOR DELHI IF KP COMES IN...

After last match Dhoni revealed that Bravo was not fit to bowl even before his injury. That makes the team selection was really bad. When you have lot of local talent of batsman pool why he selects 4 overseas batsman knowing Jadeja's form? I m not sure how good P Negi compared to Jakati. But with a squad full of promising player Dhoni as usual selected a bad team. I think with Bravo recovering from injury the best possible playing 11 should be, 1. B McCullum, 2. D Smith, 3. S Raina, 4. Baba Aparajith, 5. MS Dhoni, 6.R Jadeja, 7. Matt Henry / John Hastings, 8. R Ashwin, 9. P Negi, 10. S Badree, 11. M Sharma / I Pandey. Please no Nehra as he has nothing more to offer for Indian cricket in future. If Dhoni is really concerned about Indian future team he should play the likes of Baba Aparajith, Vijay Shankar, Mohit Sharma and Iswar Pandey instead of playing the old players who offers nothing for India in future. Will Dhoni lead from the front as example? Personally I doubt it.

CSK takes pride in whatever they do . The loss of the opening game is not the end of the world . Once CSK settles into their final XI , it will be CSK all the way . It is not without abilities that they have won the trophy twice and been the runner up thrice . CSK will be unstoppable once they gain momentum and they have players for every situation, despite very thin bowling resources.

Posted by sweetspot on (April 21, 2014, 6:35 GMT)

Never worry about a team lead by MSD. It is as simple as that as far as I'm concerned. If CSK had held their catches, they'd be sitting pretty right now and with the same team in mind, for they rarely make big changes. This should be interesting. What's the point of people here listing out their selection? Whoever is in the final 11 simply needs to apply themselves, that's all.

Posted by 504429641 on (April 21, 2014, 6:34 GMT)

This time it is interesting with the teams. Big teams like MI and CSK (who are not very smart in the auction) might not make it to play offs. If it happens, then it will be the first time in IPL history that CSK are not in playoffs.. This time i guess KXIP and RCB might most likely play in finals. SRH are again likely to finish in top 4 but not in top 2.

Posted by sweetspot on (April 21, 2014, 6:31 GMT)

We all know how MSD doesn't worry too much based on one or two games. In fact, he doesn't worry based on any number of games. He simply makes decisions and he has won 68% of his IPL games. Surely he knows a thing or two about team composition?!

Posted by sazzad-BD007 on (April 21, 2014, 6:30 GMT)

looking forward to see a great alround performance by the CSK boys....Inshallah CSK will win and MSD will come to his best today with his batting and captaining his side

Posted by Siva_Bala75 on (April 21, 2014, 6:19 GMT)

Nehra should play because he can be a reasonably OK to useful death bowler. Instead of Negi, take Ishwar Pandey

Posted by   on (April 21, 2014, 6:17 GMT)

I think Dhoni should go with this team

Brendon McCullum Dwyane Smith Suresh Raina Dwayne Bravo M.S.Dhoni Ravindra Jadeja R. Ashwin Benn Hilfenus / Samuel Badree Ishwar Pandey Mohit Sharma

see as they have good batting line up but need to strengthen their bowling.

Posted by   on (April 21, 2014, 6:12 GMT)

Bring in ishwar pandey for mohith sharma. If bravo is injured then bring in Hilfenaus/ Henry. Jadeja to be droppped and let baba Aparajith or mithun manhas come in. my chennai X1 : MCCullum, smith, raina, faf Duplesis,Bravo(hilfenaus/Henry if injured),Dhoni,Ashwin, jadeja/mithun manhas/baba aparajith, ishwar Pandey, Ashish nehra, pavan negi/mohith sharma.

well, that one lose against kings is not going to disappoint them.CSK is a great team.but in this season, their opening pair have changed, their bowlers have changed, that's it.but they will comeback today against DD and CSK are still Favourites in IPL 7 and they are going to win it,cheer for Chennai, say loudly,Chennai,Chennai!

kp is playing or not????? looking forward

Posted by   on (April 21, 2014, 5:35 GMT)

if bravo unfit to bowl. better to replace with badree or henry. negi mohit should be out iswar and baba should come in. raina should bowl at least couple of overs. faf should play. dd should drop Taylor and manoj. kedar should play

Posted by gundapps on (April 21, 2014, 5:28 GMT)

CSK blundered when they acquired Hilfi when more effective Big Bash T20 specialist pacers were available at the same price or lower in this year's auction - this in spite of being aware that he has had a rather forgettable season with them earlier. They will be hard put to accommodate him in the eleven. Nehra bowled quite well - Pandey should replace Mohit. CSK have to play Badree in place of Faf or Bravo (if injured) since batting is strong but bowling has been found wanting.

Posted by   on (April 21, 2014, 5:23 GMT)

Is KP going to play today?? Else it will be DK v/s MSD!!!

Posted by   on (April 21, 2014, 5:01 GMT)

CSK should try Baba Aparajith in place of Jadeja for at least two matches. The youngster had a very good season this time.

Posted by   on (April 21, 2014, 4:57 GMT)

My DD team for today's match Murali Vijay, Dinesh Karthick, Shami,Manoj tiwari/Kedhar Jadhav, Jaytav Unakt, Sharath, JP Duminy, De kock,, Neecham, Nathan coulter.

Posted by   on (April 21, 2014, 4:47 GMT)

csk will rock the ipl 7 title

Posted by   on (April 21, 2014, 4:45 GMT)

For csk, none of these matters. Of u win the toss, u win csk.

Posted by   on (April 21, 2014, 4:45 GMT)

Ben is good bowler replace Ben in for mohit sharma and let badree come in

Posted by   on (April 21, 2014, 4:43 GMT)

Selection of overseas players is a key. CSK has weak bowling link, they should try hilfenhaus, he can be used 3 overs earlier as he's not good in deaths. Iswar pandey should be replaced with nehra. suresh raina should be given atleast 2 overs as he bowls technically.

Posted by   on (April 21, 2014, 4:40 GMT)

Bravo is absolutely necessary for Csk,he's Csk's first choice depth bowler and was the leading wicket taker in ipl-6.Faf,even though sad have to be dropped. Fafs selection was somewhat sentimental, last year too he warmed the bench losing out to huss. Badree is good, but he's in the wrong squad. An overseas pacer is a must atleast for a mental advantage.Still Csk has got 2 choices for xi. 1.Smith,baz,raina,msd,bravo,manhas,jaddu,ash,Nehra,Mohit/pandey,badree. 2.Smith,baz,raina,msd,bravo,manhas,jaddu,ash,Negi,Nehra,henry/hilfi. In 2 U can't simply drop manhas for pandey/mohit as jaddu and ash are one too many for 6 & 7.

Posted by   on (April 21, 2014, 4:27 GMT)

@kamal..nobody here meant to take out du ple saying that he's outta form..just becuz csk doesn't need extra batsmen..nd by the way..bravo on his day can smash the ball as well as faf does..and can also grab a couple of crucial wicks

Posted by Mr.CricketJKNotHussey on (April 21, 2014, 4:25 GMT)

If KP is fit, he needs to come in for Taylor. Neesham could get another go, he does shore up the batting which is relying on JP right now. But if he is to be replaced, Parnell should come in.

Posted by   on (April 21, 2014, 2:46 GMT)

Excuse me but why take out faf out of the csk team he hasn't done anything wrong and his t20 stats are good so personally I would take Bravo off because he isn't consistent with the ball and du plessis is so I think all of you are wrong for excluding fad

Posted by   on (April 21, 2014, 1:37 GMT)

CSK should play Ben Hilfenaus for Bravo (jst because he's injured) and include Iswar pandey for Ashish/Mohit....playing Badree against DD would not be a great choice, as Murali, Karthik, Duminy...plays spin well....anyway ashwin is doing a good job for CSK...

Posted by Antony_Lucas on (April 21, 2014, 1:02 GMT)

Badree may be number 1, but he is in the wrong squad. With 3 international spinners amid the local players, he is surplus to requirements. Hilenhaus must be in, perhaps Henry

Posted by   on (April 21, 2014, 0:35 GMT)

wrong faf should go bravos form is good they should promote him plus he can bowl remember he was a key guy for mumbai

Posted by wapuser on (April 21, 2014, 0:32 GMT)

CSK shud bring in Hilfenhaus and Baba Aparajith for Ashish Nehra and Faf..

The team shiuld be: D Smith B Mccullum B Aparajith S Raina M.S.Dhoni D Bravo R Jadeja R Ashwin I Pandey M Sharma B Hilfenhaus

Posted by   on (April 20, 2014, 23:58 GMT)

Chennai : Have a squad of Internationally proven players and that's their strength. If the bowling department contributes then it would be very difficult to stop this team.

Delhi :Against Chennai they must bring in the best possible X1 and if they play with their full heart there would be only gains even if they lose the match.Best game for uncapped and inexperienced players to test their skills.Knowing Dhoni's love with spin attack,Attack is the best defense for Delhi.

Posted by   on (April 20, 2014, 23:42 GMT)

they need to bowl samuel badree or they will lose the tournament

Posted by MartinJose on (April 20, 2014, 21:52 GMT)

CSK being a solid batting unit traditionally, can only compromise batting ,not their average bowling unit. My CSK team for Delhi match is, 1)McCullum 2)D.Smith 3) B.Aparajith 4)Raina 5)Dhoni 6) Manhas 7)Jadeja 8)Ashwin 9)S.Badree 10)M.Sharma/Nehra 11)Hilfenhaus/Matt Henry.

5 quality bowlers.2 part timers(Smith & Raina).Strongest IPL opening batsmen.Tough middle order to get through. If Bravo need to be taken, drop smith and ask Aparajith to open innings.Badree's leg spin & a quality pacer for death overs is much needed for CSK.

Posted by MartinJose on (April 20, 2014, 21:22 GMT)

CSK is basically a good batting unit.Due to that reason, they can only compromise in batting only. They can'

csk should go with badree instead of faf, pandey in mohit out . It should be good playing X1. go csk go.

petersen should play this match

Posted by Salobalay on (April 20, 2014, 19:55 GMT)

Any idea when KP recovers?

Posted by vivek_khyati on (April 20, 2014, 19:36 GMT)

if plessis is not required for batting and bravo is not required for bowling, why waste 2 overseas slots ?? csk should bring in hilfenhaus for bravo and badree for plessis. in mcuullum, smith, raina, dhoni, jadeja they have enough batsmen delhi need to give quinton dekock a chance as early as possible. he can give a good start to the innings which is so crucial in t20 matches.. have a feeling vijay will come good in this match as he will be facing his teammates of 6 previous seasons.. he will definitely want to prove a point..

Posted by   on (April 20, 2014, 19:21 GMT)

I don't see KP playing any matches for DD in Dubai atleast. We still talking about 2 weeks without KP for DD. CSK will win tomorrow game; DD looks weak while CSK look to take their frustration out after losing to KXIP.

Posted by   on (April 20, 2014, 19:18 GMT)

CSK should play Ishwar Pandey maybe?

Posted by bowlfordecoy on (April 20, 2014, 18:50 GMT)

this is how i think CSK could structure a victory.

CSK got the best opening pair in baz and dwayne , possibly the most explosive and best opening pair of this IPL in all aspects.

If bravo isnt fit to bowl , a john hastings could come handy for alrounder spot leaving bravo out till he recovers.

Faf is just one extra batsman for most matches, also considering the bowling woes , a replacement in form of baree would be one winning move.

I dont think a hilfy or henry is gonna be helpful seeing the poor performances of johson and faulkner.

If CSK have plans for JP and got him , half the match is won.

It wouldnt hurt to go bersek after you are 120 for 1 in 15 overs rather than slowing down unnecessarily.

If badree comes in , Pandey becomes automatic replacement for negi.

Think its time to build baba aparjith for next badrinath

Posted by   on (April 20, 2014, 18:41 GMT)

If DD bowl 1st than they have better chance bcoz little weak bowling of csk and coming back of KP to strengthen strong batting of DD. So which team will win the toss will decide to bat 1st.

Posted by Azweer on (April 20, 2014, 18:35 GMT)

My team would be: Du Plessis, McCullum, Raina, Dhoni, Smith/Bravo, Aparajith, Jadeja, Ashwin, Badree, Mohit, Pandey.

Posted by   on (April 20, 2014, 18:32 GMT)

unless CSK shows some Gus & depth dead bowling no matter how much they score they will tend to lose.

Posted by D-Coach on (April 20, 2014, 18:31 GMT)

I do agree who ever hates A.Nehra for being in CSK who has excellent fielding unit but he is an excellent and smart swing bowler on his day like B Kumar. A.Nehara needs to learn how to gel with team inplace of try to show his uniqueness within the team. The core success of CSK in all IPL editions were due to team performance with individual brilliance at times.

As usual, yet to see the spark from Indian players in this IPL. Way to Go...

Hope Dhoni maintain his calm in shuffling the CSK team after completion of just one match. Hope people understand after KxiP won the match against RR who most of us believe good and veraity bowling line-up up could not cope up with inform Sixwel and Killer [;)]. CSK done better bowling and should have won if the catches would have held. Hope D.Bravo is fully fix to bowl too. That was the verity we missed in the first game nothing else to change in the line. As I say just one change I wish to have to bring in I.Pandey inplace of M.Sharma ahead of ODI WC 2015.

It would be better if CSK go with : D Smith, B Mcullum, S Raina, B Aparajith, D Bravo, MS Dhoni, R Jadeja, R Ashwin, S Badree, M Sharma, I Pandey

Eventhough I wish to include Badree, Let CSK be the same team for two more innings. If any change is required, then replace I.Pandey inplace of M.Sharma. Wish to see how he performs in big stage and believe he is having potential to play for Team India.
