Match facts

Royal Challengers Bangalore v Knight Riders Kolkata, Sharjah
Thursday, April 24, 2014
Start time 1830 (1430 GMT, 2000 IST)

Big Picture

Royal Challengers Bangalore have made one of their best starts to the tournament by winning their first two matches comprehensively and with the likely return of Chris Gayle, who missed the first two games due to a sore back, they will look to keep up with the marauding Kings XI Punjab at the top of the table. But Kolkata Knight Riders, the team that gave Royal Challengers a historic mauling on that fateful night six years ago at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, do have a decent spanner, in the form of their bowling attack, to throw in Royal Challengers' works.

How Sunil Narine and Co bowl to the glitzy batting stars could well define the outcome of the match. Although the trio of Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh and AB de Villiers have all had one good innings under their belts, Narine has the ability to run through line-ups like he did in the first game against Mumbai Indians and other Knight Riders bowlers have a wealth of experience at this level. In fact, the bowler who has taken most wickets in Knight Riders v Royal Challengers matches - Vinay Kumar, 13 - has switched sides to move east. The odds, though, are still in favour of Royal Challengers given Knight Riders' unreliable batting order.

Like The Dakar, the Indian Premier League is a long and gruelling race and it is just entering its second and last week of the desert phase. Where teams stand at the end of the league stage may still be decided by what happens in India in the month of May, but it won't hurt to make the most of what is on offer in the Gulf.

Watch out for ...

While their batting line-up almost always hogs the attention, Royal Challengers' bowlers have had a solid part to play in the team's victories. In 40 overs, they have given away 260 runs, which means they are the most economical attack so far. The man leading their bowling charts is Yuzvendra Chahal, the young legspinner from Haryana. He has had a good start to the tournament but can he keep up the consistency?

Gautam Gambhir was the pillar of Knight Riders' title win in the 2012, but with two ducks in two matches, he has often left the team in peril. Luckily for him, two of the team's fresh domestic recruits have hit the ground running, but as the past results have shown, the team's fortunes are intertwined with Gambhir's batting form.

Stats and trivia

  • In the first two matches, Parthiv Patel has hit more boundaries than the combined number for the rest of the Royal Challegers batting line-up
  • Knight Riders have won six out of their 12 matches against Royal Challengers

In view of Gambhir's 2 DUCKS in the previous matches, he should sent Uthappa - a regular opener to open the innings & he should drop down to #4 position. At the moment he appears like a non contributing captain who does no deserve his place in XI.

  • Sagarneel on April 24, 2014, 13:28 GMT

The main problem with KKR is their philosophy, which is approaching a T20 game with a Test match like mindset. They aim at restricting the opposition to a low score as they are aware of their ineptness when it comes to making or chasing a big score due to the lack of explosive batsmen. None of their batsmen have half the abilities of the likes of Gayle, AB, Miller or Maxwell when it comes to improvisation or power and playing big shots. This strategy came good when they won the IPL in 2012 (compounded with great form of Gambhir), but since then, it has become annoyingly uni-dimensional. Seeing a squad that has players like Lynn and Ten Doeaschate field the likes of Kallis and Shakib always baffles me. I don't know the reason behind Gambhir's obsession with big names, and perennially backing out-of-form plaers like Pathan, but whatever it is, it this mindset that costs KKR every time.

  • Angelsss on April 24, 2014, 13:08 GMT

Only miraculous innings from Kallis or incredible spell from Narine can save KKR otherwise its undoubtedly RCB game....

  • Sharath048 on April 24, 2014, 13:02 GMT

Kuldeep Yadav should be given a chance. He is the only chinaman bowler in India and did well in the recently concluded U-19 world cup

  • on April 24, 2014, 12:59 GMT

KKR should drop Morne Morkel and bring in Ryan doeschate, in place of chawala bring Umesh . Umesh, kallis, sunil, shakib, ryan can bowl and ryans inclusion will bring more power to KKR batting line up. Push Yousuf has pinch hitter . so batting line up should be pandey, uthappa, , yousuf, kallis, gambhir, ryan, shakib and then bowlers

  • IndTheBest on April 24, 2014, 12:39 GMT

KKR should use Uthappa as an opener and push Kalis as one down that way they can maximize the batting potential they have. KKR is one of my semi-final favorite along with Punjab, Chennai and RCB. Good luck to both the teams!

  • on April 24, 2014, 12:31 GMT

I think KKR is missing a big hitter and Chris Lyynn can be that player..he should play in place of shakib ...Gambhir should give confidence to Chawla as he has been under utilized till now..

  • j4884 on April 24, 2014, 12:29 GMT

Hope Umesh Yadav gets a game today. Vinay Kumar is a liability and will leak runs. Still cannot believe a guy like Umesh Yadav who consistently swings the bowl at 140+ is warming the bench for someone like Vinay Kumar. Poor team selection by Gambhir. He did the same to Shami when he was in KKR and Shami warmed the bench for 3 years.

  • Guru_gurus on April 24, 2014, 11:53 GMT

Is there any-body here hoping to have VijayZol, he is having 100 in Twenty20 and good strikerate of 130...could be good option for Indian batsman slot.

  • on April 24, 2014, 11:48 GMT

Gayle may take a couple of games to settle down. Not easy to come back after an injury. Spinners of both sides are likely to rule the roost.

  • cricextemist on April 24, 2014, 11:43 GMT

Andre Russell must come in for Shakib. Kohli, De villiers, along with lefties Yuvi and Gayle, it is a huge risk for Gambhir to go in with Shakib. Also Russell could help in reining in Gayle....

  • on April 24, 2014, 11:10 GMT

Kkr should go with chris lynn as a hitter and kuldeep yadav as the chinamen bowler by droppping shakib and piyush chawla

  • on April 24, 2014, 11:04 GMT

If GG fails today. He should be dropped from the squad. Kallis should become the captain. Manish should stay at number 3 and Shakib at 4. I think Shakib is not a finisher but an innings builder when the team is in bad situation. So 4 is appropriate for him. Uthappa and Yusuf can bat at 5 and 6 respectively. The rest can be selected based on the conditions and yes Narine will be there at 11. I want to see Tendo in the match in place of Morkel. He is a good Hitter and a good pacer.

  • on April 24, 2014, 10:46 GMT

I think Kkr is wasting Yusuf Pathan's talent. He should bat at no.3 or 4 to show his talent.Good luck Kkr

  • Djrocks11 on April 24, 2014, 10:44 GMT

I am very much impressed with the bowling of RCB in the last 2 matches. The bowlers are hitting the right areas and the fielding standard is also good. My main concern is Yuvraj Singh. His reflexes are getting slower and slower and his fielding standard is decreasing day by day. RCB could have bought 6 good players with the money they have spent on Yuvraj. They could have gone for Warner, Duminy or if they were after Indian player they could have bought Sehwag, Uthappa. Now they have to stick with yuvraj who will keep failing.. I wish Yuvraj plays minimum 50% of his actual potential (2011 world cup) and helps RCB to reach the play offs.

  • hanumanthchavala on April 24, 2014, 10:21 GMT

rcb wins when they are bat 2nd because if they select bat 1st kohli doesn't know how to set total for opponent based on pitches when they bat 1st most of times they are reliable on gayle and ABD because they know how score and how many runs to score in 1st battong. kohli fails to score in first battong sure why they cant win IPL tourn is when bat first they are depend on gayle he fails the score is below 160 r 170

  • anver777 on April 24, 2014, 9:41 GMT

If Gayle occupies for 15 overs today...... then there will an interesting battle between him & his WI team mate "Mystery Man" Narine who's bowling superbly at the moment !!!!

  • ramz30380 on April 24, 2014, 9:35 GMT

@choppa13 - this is to my understanding that all players are paid for the season of IPL irrespective of whether they feature in the playing XI or not.

If they miss out on 1 or 2 matches they are stilll with the squad & will get the remunerations as per the contract. If they are injured during a match & are ruled out for the rest of tournament. Say e.g. Bravo, who was injured while playing in the XI, his fees will be paid as he was injured during play.

PLayers missing out due to injuries b4 the IPL will not be paid. But here again it depends on the franchisee - if they still want to pay the player they can! E.g Pune Warriors paid Yuvraj inspite of him missing out due to his cancer treatment!

I think there is a ratio system where 75% of the sum is paid for playing IPL and 25% is paid for playing Champions Trophy if the team qualifies. If it doesnt then the entire sum is paid during the IPL tenure.

Apart from all this they are paid match fees which by itself is a huge sum in the IPL

  • Moinoddin on April 24, 2014, 9:27 GMT

Yousuf pathan should bat at no 3 or 4. to hit like maxwel.............

It's a lot talks going about the two left hand batsman yes GG & CG but both the teams are performing really well instead their too much contribution. But,it's really choose the better team right now, because one team has the strong batting lineup but the others power is verity in bowling.Again both the teams prove critics wrong where KKR cross 160+ in both the matches RCB bowlers have done a well job,so it's too early to judge the better team. But,as a KKR supporter want KKR play well & win the match. Korbo Lorbo Jeetbo.

  • Avi56 on April 24, 2014, 9:18 GMT

ok i see a lot of hostility with regard to the karnataka players not selected. First of all those ppl have not seen the auctions. This was the 1st time uncapped players were put in an auction..usually state players are signed externally..Infact when manish pandey and vinay kumar played 1st for RCB they were signed outside the auction..When u have karnataka players who won many trophies in the state tournis dont you think they will be in high demand. When the auctions came RCB did not have much funds and plus they did put their bid many times but the price was high. But again Ranji and T20 is a diff gameplay. in prev year Mayank, Vinay, Aravind, Mithun were in the palying Xi always but none of them were consistent.Vinay showed some promise but failed during many crucial Matches. Mayank only explosive for 10 balls..The players were replaced with new players who are playing good. We all cant be emotional. We should look at the game and wish Kar players good luck with other teams

  • qazi255 on April 24, 2014, 9:11 GMT

I think Shakib should be sent at open or at no.3 because shakib is the best hitter and bet bowler in KKR team , and I think it is time to replace kallis with andre russel because kallis is not good any more best of luck to kkr from BANGLADESH

  • on April 24, 2014, 9:09 GMT

they are wasting pathan by sending him only 2 overs left. KKR should send him in with atleast 10 overs in hand. He has capacity to destroy spin department

  • on April 24, 2014, 9:08 GMT

Gayle is a mentally weak guy, and iam a West Indian who is a Gayle fan. I supported him 100% against the WI Cricket board, but 1 cannot blunder when it comes to facts, and the facts are there is no cricketer who is hurt more than this guy. Sometimes 1 gets the impression that if the wind blows too hard, he falls down and is hurt. WI cricketers are prima donnas to start with they are always unfit and get hurt easily, but Gayle takes it to another level.

  • Avi56 on April 24, 2014, 9:08 GMT

I dont know why are they saying kkR's bowling. Both these teams faced the same opponents in their prev 2 games and according to me RCB's bowling has been far more superior. Barring Sunil Narine all other bowlers have not been good consistently even morkel the last match...If u look at RCB Starc, Chahal and Aaron have been bowling consisitently well both matches and working as a good unit..Even Dinda played well with mumbai showing improvement..KKRs bowling is only Narine as of now.. but as a unit RCB are better

  • choppa13 on April 24, 2014, 8:54 GMT

Can anyone tell me how the players r paid in the Ipl? Is the auction price what they r paid regardless how many games they play? Or is the auction price what the franchises pay then they pay extra per game each player plays? Because there seems like alot of players r on a paid holiday. Could a franchise not buy as many players but spend more on quality players? Or is there a certain number of players they must have? Excuse my ignorance but as a kiwi I'm not sure how things work in the ipl so if someone could enlighten me would be greatly appreciated. Cheers

  • champ03 on April 24, 2014, 8:48 GMT

waiting for the gaylestorm to come and blow away everything. i also think kohli should make Yuvraj bowl more overs. this is just the start of the tournament and the more he boels, the better will be for the team for the later stages of the league.

  • Mr.CricketJKNotHussey on April 24, 2014, 8:48 GMT

@Karunk RCB didn't opt for Karnataka players because they splurged on Yuvraj and didn't have any money left. All the Karnataka players were in demand due to the domestic season and they couldn't keep up with the prices. That said, KKR needs to work on its side. It does not have the best bowling attack, Narine is the only one. Chawla, Morne and Vinay need to make way for Cummins, Yadav and the other Yadav. Morne Morkel only had one good IPL, he does not have a good T-20 record. The others just don't perform well enough. KKr should also try to get Tendo into the side somehow. Gambhir is turning into a liability. RCB is set for the most part. However, if someone is out of form, especially the Indian players, they don't have any backup.

  • on April 24, 2014, 8:37 GMT

Morkel should replace for Cummins and Shakib should bat at no 3.Morkel is not a good death bowler. He always gone for plenty at the death.

Today's match winner will be RCB & Hero will be Virat Kholi.............!

  • Shahed.Akhtar on April 24, 2014, 8:02 GMT

Last 2-3 seasons it was Gayle. The flavor of the IPL this year has been Maxwell, and to some extent Miller. They have set the benchmark for Gayle to emulate. Lets see if he succeeds. Still feel ABdV should bat ahead of Yuvraj. KKR banks heavily on Narine and Kallis. Its important for them that at least two from Gambhir, Shakib and Pathan fire. This match may be a lot closer than it appears on paper. Kohli and Gambhir have always captained by the book - maybe this game goes with the one who takes more calculated risk.

  • Sen_San on April 24, 2014, 7:55 GMT

This is the first season after the auction. Most of the teams will take min 5 matches to settle with their combinations. Unfortunately, this yr tournament shifts to India when they are settled. This year some new venues have been added like cuttack, ahmedabad. Lets see how the teams adjust to the varying conditions as the tournament progresses. No home advantage, play according to conditions available to you. Too early to comment on team combinations and wins. One man show will not go longer, eg. RCB were cruising in one season when gayle hit form. Towards the end of the season he missed to fire and they lost in few crucial matches which dented their chances. Always team effort will work in the longer run where everyone has to chip in. All the best to the teams and give good cricketainment to the fans all over the world. Lets keep match fixing away from the game. IPL rocks.

  • Karunk on April 24, 2014, 7:38 GMT

KKR should win today with solid performance by Manish, Robin and Vinay. They should make RCB realize how they missed on local talent. RCB did not opt for a single Karnataka player during auction despite Karnataka being Ranji, Irani & Vajay Hazare trophy winners, this year.

  • on April 24, 2014, 7:18 GMT
