Agarkar: Can't see Mumbai playing Hussey again

The big picture

There is this joke going around on social media. A judge asks a boy who he would like to stay with - his mother or his father. None, because both of them beat me, he says. "I would like to say with Mumbai Indians, as they beat no one." It has been a horror first one-third of the season for the defending champions, and they are in danger of returning home without a single win from the UAE leg of the IPL.

Till their title win, the criticism of Mumbai Indians used to be that despite having a galaxy of overseas and Indian heavyweights, they would often fall short at crucial stages of a game. But compete they would more often than not, till this season. Scores of 122, 115, 141 and 125 do not win you T20 games, unless your bowling has an exceptional day. The one time Mumbai Indians bowled first in UAE, they conceded 163.

Mumbai Indians have had running problems with the opening partnership in several seasons, and this season has been no different. By their fourth game, they realised that the man who has reinvented himself successfully as a limited-overs opener for India is also an option at the top of their order. Before that, Rohit Sharma was coming in with too much to do after the pair of Michael Hussey and Aditya Tare had failed to provide the kind of starts their side needed.

With fewer games per side this season, Mumbai Indians cannot really afford to keep piling up the losses. Sunrisers Hyderabad are in only a slightly better position with one victory. Their batting looked top-heavy coming into the season, and the fears have come true so far, with a thin middle order unable to step up when the powerful batsmen do not fire upfront. At least the strengths and weaknesses are clearer in Sunrisers' case. Mumbai Indians, as has been the case in the past too, seem to be misfiring without any standout reason.

Players to watch

Rohit Sharma replaced Ricky Ponting as captain last season and led Mumbai Indians to their maiden IPL title after years of disappointment. He then had a productive Champions Trophy and has finally started to deliver on his long-standing promise for India. He has an army of advisors off the field in the Mumbai Indians support staff but his challenge is to filter the gallons of inputs he must be receiving and translate it into a turnaround quickly.

Rohit can turn to the experience of 2013 but this is new territory for Shikhar Dhawan the captain. Further, his own limited-overs form hasn't been great coming into the tournament. He had to sit out an ODI in New Zealand and was also left out for the knockout stage of the World T20. Not only will he have to revive his side's campaign as its leader, he will also have to contribute majorly with the bat, something he has not managed so far.

Stats and trivia

  • Mumbai Indians have the least number of 50-plus scores this season - one, made by Rohit Sharma
  • Amit Mishra's economy-rate of 9.48 is the worst this season among specialist spinners who have played more than one match

now I think teams realize the value of a badri kind of player... he could have been the cog in the middle order for these 2 teams ... worst thing is when a manoj tiwary who hasn't played any significant knocks can get buyers at 2 cr base price badri couldn't find any... it is totally disheartening... let these teams suffer... at least then probably next year they'll realize t 20 is not only abt playing flamboyantly but also technically and sensibly....

Dhawan seem to be one of the worst captain of the session.

Not making use of the team given to him , keeping P Rasoon and I Pathan on bench.and giving continuous chances to Vgopal Rao even if he is not performing is not a sign of a good captain.

  • NikSaid on April 30, 2014, 13:54 GMT

Santokie(97 wkt in only 52 t20 at 6 run/over!) for Anderson and Ben Dunk (BBL Player of the series) for Hussey. Guess MI can afford to drop a blower in Oza for batsman Susant Marathe... Soon fans will be cheering other team. This is IPL entertainment, no die hard game! whats the point of watching a flop horror movie for an entertainment!?

Apr 28, Punjab vs Bangalore - Punjab advanced. Apr 29, Rajasthan vs Kolkata - Rajasthan advanced. Today Mumbai vs Hydrabad - Dead rubber, both already knocked out. Mark my words - this is what will happen.

  • baji003 on April 30, 2014, 11:11 GMT

Almost all the teams were desperately looking for badri kind of guy, Genuine batsmen were missing., instead patch fixing allrounders everywhere., Thank you Karthik for bringing badri into lime light., If there is any way to bring back unsold indian players into team, then any team can prefer badri for anyone. especially Mumbai indian would need him to rescue in the middle while rohith attack in frontline., SRH would prefer also.,

    1.Dhawan 2.Finch 3.Warner. 4.Venugopal rao 5.Sammy 6.Rahul 7.I pathan.[better than ishanth sharma] 8.P rasool.[Amit mishra is not performing ] 9.K sharma 10.Steyn 11.B kumar

  • on April 30, 2014, 8:36 GMT

Simmons, Tare, Rohit, Rayudu, Pollard, Gautam, Harbhajan, Zaheer, Santokie, Ojha, Malinga

  • Shahed.Akhtar on April 30, 2014, 8:30 GMT

At least one from MI and SRH looks to be on the way to getting the wooden spoon, unless they perk up their thinking and make some bold changes. MI need to start afresh. Look at the remainder of the league as a 10 match league in which they need to win at least 8. What's the best combo then? Rohit and Dunk to open, followed by Rayudu, Anderson, Pollard, Gautam, Tare, Harbhajan, Zaheer, Malinga and Shreyas Gopal. Yes, a leggie is needed in the fold. Give a look in to Shreyas Gopal who played a major part for Karnataka last season. If the order appears top heavy, then shift Tare to open with Dunk, and Rohit drops to three. SRH need to get Parvez Rasool in and possibly drop Ishant Sharma.

  • on April 30, 2014, 8:13 GMT

mumbai should open the batting with simmos and tare as both are good hitters followed by corey, rohit, rayudu,kp,gautam (he is turning out to be a good finisherfor mi),bhajji, zak, gopal, malinga the reason for playing simmons ahead of huss and dunk is that he can bowl couple of overs as well

  • StevieS on April 30, 2014, 8:07 GMT

Lendl Simmons LMAO, what are the Mumbai slectors/buyers on? the guy is a run a ball scorer if he is lucky. Jesse Ryder, Hales, Wright, Guptil and my mum are far far superior 20/20 batsman. Dunk for Hussey is the only change I would make.

  • on April 30, 2014, 7:42 GMT

Mumbai Indians have not able to get good players in this years auction and that is hurting the core team.

  • MOZ RHINOS on April 30, 2014, 7:01 GMT

Basically the two teams have to go back to think tank and sort out the issues while finalising the teams.

MI:They should drop Huss and Corey and take Simmons and Dunk, so team for MI should be Simmons, Tare, Rohit, Dunk, Rayudu, pollard, gautam, bhajji, zaheer, malinga, ohja.

SRH: Drop Mishra, Ishant , Warner and get Taylor, Rasool and Irfan Team should be: Taylor, Dhawan, Finch, Irfan,Sammy, Rao,Rahul/ohja,Rasool, Karan, steyn, bhuvi .

  • Sharath274 on April 30, 2014, 6:55 GMT

with the tournament almost reaching the 1/3rd stage, its worth while to have a look at the players in each side who havent really got an opportunity yet whom we feel can contribute 1)CSK : Badree, Aparajith 2)SRH : Rassool, Juneja 3)MI : Santokie, Gopal, Dunk 4)KKR : Ten Doeschate, Kuldeep Yadav 5)RR : D.Yagnik, Deepak Hooda 6)KXI : Hendricks, Perera

  • on April 30, 2014, 6:47 GMT

I prefer Jason holder instead of ishant who has been leaking runs so far . Jason would be a good option to replace ishant

  • on April 30, 2014, 5:49 GMT

mi has nothing except regret& throwing bat , neither bowler noe batsman doing anything

  • AneeshGooner on April 30, 2014, 5:39 GMT

Very disappointed with Hyderabad. They don't do the necessary changes. They need a middle order batsmen. Dhawan Finch Ojha Taylor/Warner Henriques Rahul Pathan Karn Amit Steyn Bhuvi should be the team. Sammy bowls poorly plus he comes to bat early because of weak middle order so he makes no contribution. Henriques on the other hand is very useful allrounder. Middle order will strengthen.

  • on April 30, 2014, 5:18 GMT

srh should play manpreet junja for ishant and rasool for mishra

  • SurathJW on April 30, 2014, 5:01 GMT

Please correct me if Im wrong. Whats the point in picking up a very good attacking Aussie batsman from BBL and keeping him in the dugout while his fellow Aussie gets selected despite he hasn't done anything worthwhile in T20s after 2013 IPL???.. I understand selecting pollard and Anderson because they are all-rounders. They fail with the bat, but they might do something with the ball.. But If hussy can not do his part with the bat, I don't know why he is in the team because he clearly is not in the team for his bowling ability...

  • krish2486 on April 30, 2014, 4:52 GMT

my srh team finch, dhawan, naman ojha, warner, rahul, sammy, irfan, rasool,k sarma, steyn, bhuvi 4 fast bowlers,2 spinners and bat can upto 10 i think this is perfect team.

  • sampu_sheikh on April 29, 2014, 23:29 GMT

SRH need to drop Mishra, he's leaking runs and not taking wickets either. He needs to regather himself before he can make the playing XI. Play Rasool instead of him, he hasn't had the chance to prove himself yet. I would also drop Warner and get Brendon Taylor in to strengthen the middle order. Drop Ishant and get Irfan in to strengthen the batting. Irfan and Ishant both leak runs but Irfan also adds batting power. A win for SRH would make the middle of the group very interesting. GO SRH!

  • svickyvel on April 29, 2014, 23:01 GMT

  • on April 29, 2014, 20:10 GMT

SRH bowling is out of form. Their top order is misfiring and the middle order haas no fire. So Mumbai may finally "beat" someone.

SRH need to drop Venugopal and bring in either Irfan or Parvez, to bolster their bowling. Also, the need to bring Sammy up the order.

  • on April 29, 2014, 19:35 GMT

A common trend in IPL...a mediocre team from nowhere would come and threaten or even win the title and then go back to where it came from. Only CSK have been consistent in all seasons. Its almost like a rotation policy where the weakest team this year would win next yr ipl like Mumbai.

On paper SRH is the stronger of the 2 teams. But Dhawan & Warner have been very inconsistent in batting which is badly hurting the side. SRH need the top 4 batsmen to perform well & @ high S/R. The magic formula for SRH to win is to go with their usual top 3 + Rahul as the 4 batsmen followed by 3 All rounders - Sammy/Henriques, Rasool & Pathan followed by 4 Bowlers- Kumar, Steyn, Mishra & Karn Sharma. This gives the best balance & maximum utilisation of SRH's limited potential. If SRH can get >160 in batting then it will give them a fighting chance to win the match. MI have 3 big hitters in Pollard, Anderson & Hussey with Rohit Sharma being their trump card in batting. But their bowling is very "Iffy"compared to SRH's bowling. This is touted as the "Battle of the 2 basement Teams". Who is going to be last will be determined on this basis. MI are winless whilst SRH has just one victory. SRH need to play as a team with intensity & pull off a win to remain playoff contenders. Good Luck!
