Australia batsman David Hussey will replace Dwayne Bravo in the Chennai Super Kings' squad for the rest of the 2014 IPL season. Super Kings announced it on their official Twitter account. They also retweeted Hussey saying, "Just recd some amazing news!!!!! Can't wait until tomorrow.... Get in there!!!!"

Incidentally, Hussey had been involved with the IPL as a television commentator for the host broadcaster. The 36-year-old, who has played 69 ODIs and 39 T20s for Australia, has plenty of IPL experience, having featured in 23 matches for Kolkata Knight Riders and 36 matches for Kings XI Punjab in previous seasons. In all, he has scored 1206 runs at an average of 25.65 and a strike rate of 122.93, with four half-centuries. His brother Michael Hussey was one of Super Kings' finest overseas players, scoring 1691 runs in 46 games between 2008 to 2013.

Bravo, the West Indies allrounder, was ruled out of the tournament after injuring his shoulder while fielding against Kings XI Punjab during Super Kings' first match in 2014.

BMac is flying home for the birth of his child and will miss matches on may 22nd and 24th, says cricinfo article, No mention of him missing the play offs/finals due to international duty. So David will definitely replace him for those two matches. CSK has to rejig the batting order. Faf or BAparajith can open, with David playing in the middle order.

Kane Williamson would have been a better choice. Top batsman and good bowler

Posted by ShivCraicket on (May 14, 2014, 10:19 GMT)

First of all its a Great move by the CSK.. CSK would have liked Ravi Bopara, Luke Wright kind of un selfish players but they are stuck in some tours.. David Hussey is not a Bad player though..He is a very strong batsman and play very well against spin..remember super over against Ashwin in champions league he won the match single handed.. David is a handi bowler too and very experienced player for any team. They all appraising Maxwell because he is fearless in that case even chris gayle couldnt win IPL final when its needed.. so we needed a player who know how to play regarding the situation.. My team will be Faf and Smith opens where hussey will be in middle order. CSK should try with matt, hastings or hilfy.. to have a better fast bowler since hussey can fill the 3rd or 4th spinner in the team.. where is there is no need of local players like manhas.. If hussey wins one match for CSK all this ppl will shut their mouth than the un responsible maxwell.

Posted by brahmma on (May 14, 2014, 5:20 GMT)

From the NZ's WI tour itinerary, i saw that the first warm up match is from 29th May. Being the captain of the side, Baz will surely be there right from the first match. That would mean, he MAY miss the Q1 at Eden Gardens on 27th. With Q2 and Finals at Mumbai and Bangalore, CSK would certainly need a fire power in the middle, with Faf being promoted to open with Smith. In that sense, this is a good move.

Posted by TRAM on (May 14, 2014, 4:42 GMT)

Maxwell can be contained only by good pace yorkers. CSK bowlers are magnanimous enough to donate 120 length balls in each match. They need good pace bowler - meaning with yorker skills - which is scarce. Unfortunately the experienced Indian bowlers have NOT learnt consistent yorkers in the last 8 years or so since the T20 era started. Shami, Bhuvi, MSharma, Aaron, PraveenKumar, Sandeep Sharma, IPandey, etc bowl very few (< 3 may be per match) yorkers. Many err resulting in full-toss or over-pitched deliveries.

Posted by indianzen on (May 14, 2014, 0:10 GMT)

CSK will win as long as Nehra is not playing... CSK desperately needs a fast bowler of bret lee/steyn mould and everything else has been taken care of...

Posted by   on (May 13, 2014, 19:27 GMT)

They want to know how to stop maxwell. That's why they got David ;) what happens when bravo comes back next year? At times they need players for the nets, or simply to fill in a slot. CSK should have got a real fast bowler or a fast bowling allrounder. Or even a hitter at the top. They have got him after so many matches...ok got it. Mike hussey wrote a book and he passes some messages to CSK. But if mike is there then eyebrows are raised so David carries a message.

Posted by CricketMaan on (May 13, 2014, 14:12 GMT)

Its a good decision as he has as sound cricketing knowledge, but will he every play in IPL 7 with only 4 league games to go? Who can he replace with Smith, McCullum, Faf all secured with thier places. Badree has done well in all 3 outings so far and i cant see Dhoni choosing David ahead of Badree! David can come in only if Faf gets injured to give that middle order a boost. But if Smith or Mccullum is injured then we have problem as other than Baba i cant see anyone else opening!

Posted by   on (May 13, 2014, 12:18 GMT)

It's a good by actually, though he gonna decorate the bench for the whole season considering the consistent performance of CSK batters. I think they should have gone for a strike bowler, which would have been handy for them in the play offs.

Posted by ilovetests on (May 13, 2014, 10:47 GMT)

Good move. Hopefully this means that McCullum is planning to play both warm-up games prior to the 1st test in the West Indies and will fly out from India at the end of May. This is a big chance for NZ to win a test series abroad, but it is crucial that the players are well-prepared, so that there isn't a repeat of the last series in the Caribbean.

Posted by   on (May 13, 2014, 10:06 GMT)

Very smart move by CSK!!! As we know the finals will be played at Bengaluru, which is a batsman's paradise. Even top bowlers have not fared well there. Considering this, playing Badree or Hilfy there wouldn't benefit much. With Hussey, CSL got a handy quick offbreak bowler and a reliable lower order finisher. Remember, apart from MSD, CSK lack genuine finisher. Not only Bengaluru, even Mumbai where eliminator will be played is known to be good for batsmen. So, even if CSK bat second and to chase 200+, we now have Hussey in place of Manhas, which by any means is an excellent option. Third seamer slot could be filled by Nehra or More. Just by reading out these names - Smith, Baz,Raina,Faf,MSD,Hussey,Jadeja...you wouldnt bet against them chasing any target set.

Posted by VijayMadhavan on (May 13, 2014, 9:03 GMT)

Good pick. CSK always rock. It doesn't matter who is going to come IN & Out. They never depend on one single player (Other teams should learn from CSK).

Posted by   on (May 13, 2014, 8:55 GMT)

doesnt make any sense they already have ashwin and jadeja as almost allrounders then why david hussey. he is a spinner and they would have done better with a little bit of variety. He is mediocre with the bat and very mediocre with the ball. Bad choice.

Posted by   on (May 13, 2014, 8:47 GMT)

They should replace Badree with David Hussey and bring back Nehra in place of Manhas. Nehra bowled well against Punjab during his opening overs and he can be given just two overs to bowl upfront and leave a majority of Mohit's and Ishwar's overs for the death. Nehra 2 overs, Ishwar 2, Mohit 1, Ashwin 1 should be the powerplay overs. In the death use 3 of Mohit, maybe 1 of Ishwar and if Nehra has a good day 1 of his overs between 16-20. The middle overs can be bowled by Ashwin 3, Jaddu 3, Hussey 2, Ishwar 1. If any of these bowlers has a bad day, then Smith, Raina and Faf can bowl an over or two. Our batting order will be formidable with Smith, Bmac, Raina, Faf, Dhoni, David Hussey, Jadeja and Ashwin. Hussey is also a wonderful finisher and can pace his innings well with Dhoni, in case of a top order collapse. If Nehra doesn't work in the scheme of things, Ronit More can be tested.

I dont see BAZ leaves for NZ as the 1st test starts on 8 june and IPL finals at 1st june. Dont know why David was bought.

Posted by MADHUR.KHOSLA on (May 13, 2014, 6:48 GMT)

Mark my words...David Hussey will be a dud for CSK. Not a good buy at all!

Posted by Cricketfan11111 on (May 13, 2014, 6:35 GMT)

Nehra is a good bowler and served india well. Because of his poor fielding/catching csk dropped him. Hilf and Pandey are good fielders. CSK has a fast bowling all rounder Hastings in the bench and also the fast bowler Matt Henry. So they chose spinning all rounder David Hussey. DHussey can replace any of Smith/BMac/Faf/Hilf in case of injury/necessity. Choice of David looks perfect.

Posted by Sohin on (May 13, 2014, 6:09 GMT)

Well not a right decision ,and it may back fire. Even if BAZ leaves for NZ comittment, D.Hussey s quite old with least Intl Experience off late. CSK needs some who can fire all cylinders as given that scenario Kevin O Brien or Tom Cooper or Elton Chigumbara would have been good.

Posted by Sharath274 on (May 13, 2014, 5:34 GMT)

Sure.. he is a very good player..but CSK wud have preferred some one who is a better bowler than batsman. Ryan Mclaren wud have been a good choice.. or Luke wright or Maharoof. Or if they were keen on a batsman, on form, Alex Hales wud have been good.He cud have even replaced Baz or Dwayne. Also its high time to give some opportunities to B.Aparajith in place of Manhas. Also try out another pacer in place of Ishwar.

Posted by vivekanandanarulmozhi on (May 13, 2014, 5:30 GMT)

This is good pick by CSK, bcoz they want an overseas batsman as a backup. Don't under estimate their choice bcoz what ever they do, it will struck gold for them.

The only bad thing they do is, they pick nehra instead of him praveen kumar, Munaf patel and pankaj singh are far better and best.

Posted by   on (May 13, 2014, 5:11 GMT)

CSK Making plan for Play offs, because BAZ might leave CSK for NZ commitment so CSK Planning open with D smith and FAF and to use David in lower middle order, and keep Badree/Hilf as bowler.

Posted by Antony_Lucas on (May 13, 2014, 4:17 GMT)

Good play by CSK taking Hussey out of the commentary box. I enjoyed him for the one game, but from then on it became puzzling as to why he was given a fulltime role. Welcome Mr Julian

Posted by   on (May 13, 2014, 4:10 GMT)

I guess it would probably have something to do with new zealand tour of wi in first week of June... baz is the captain so he may leave before playoffs to join the nz team for tour matches... just a speculation... probably with hilfy being pretty ordinary maybe the team is looking to go back to nehra... no doubt nehra can be a very good bowler in the death... hilfy and ishwar don't seem to be cut out for the death over.... so probably bring nehra and further strengthen their batting which has seen some collapses in a few games so far... can't really judge their strategy... and have they given up on retaining bravo??? generally replacing players means terminating the contract and the player goes to the auctions

Posted by class9ryan on (May 13, 2014, 3:51 GMT)

Its a good addition but I am quite certain that he will be given the role of 12th man.

Posted by sweetiepaper on (May 13, 2014, 3:43 GMT)

Not a smart move by CSK. Bowling or a good bowling allrounder is what was needed. This also means that CSK has given up their option to retain Bravo at the end of the season. Not very smart.

Posted by   on (May 13, 2014, 3:09 GMT)

Why all ppl thinking bad of inclusion of hussey... he can replace badree or hilfy.. bcoz chennai has world class indian fast bowler Nehra.. so now it sounds csk strongest team ever

Posted by   on (May 13, 2014, 2:29 GMT)

Its sounds great that D.Hussey has signed with CSK. Already CSK is stronger now its getting very stronger than before. Lets hope csk will be the title winners of this season to roll the controversies... Great CSKians...

Posted by Naren on (May 13, 2014, 1:53 GMT)

Lol.. they are getting David to probably figure out where to bowl to Super Max :). David is not even practicing. But he might be a better choice than Faf.

Posted by Mr.CricketJKNotHussey on (May 13, 2014, 1:13 GMT)

Nothing against Hussey as a player but honestly, I don't see him playing in this CSK XI. They already have three good international batsmen in good form. Hilfy has been doing pretty decently too, and they have Badree for replacement. I would have thought that they might have gone for a like for like replacement for Bravo, someone like Mahmood. That could have actually strengthened their squad as he is a canny bowler and shores up the batting too.

Posted by iceaxe on (May 13, 2014, 0:37 GMT)

Looks great on paper. Would be good to see him on field. But who will he replace?

Posted by   on (May 12, 2014, 22:55 GMT)

They should've gone with Michael Neser. He was pretty good in the BBL and almost won a game for the strikers with his batting. David Hussey would've been a more like for like replacement with someone like Faf Du Plessis if he got injured considering they can both bowl decent part time.

Posted by   on (May 12, 2014, 22:27 GMT)

His place would be useless unless any overseas players got injured...All batsmen doing great job....CSK only desperately need pace bowler from overseas

Posted by Sudhir65 on (May 12, 2014, 21:39 GMT)

The article does not say how much he was signed for. CSK already saved on paying for his airfare because I believe he was commentating on TV.

Posted by   on (May 12, 2014, 21:03 GMT)

It would have been better if they would have gone for Vernon philander or luke wright or ryan mclaren

Posted by BoratShah on (May 12, 2014, 19:57 GMT)

I thought he would be a injury replacement for Gayle for RCB!

Posted by jansielan on (May 12, 2014, 19:43 GMT)

I think this is a smart move by CSK Think Tank to have someone in the likes of David Hussey in their camp. Having nearly secured the playoffs, it may not be a bad idea to rotate players, that includes openers DS and BM by the time the tournament reaches the business end. God forbid if something happens to anyone (like what happened to D Bravo), we always have someone else assume the role seamlessly.

Posted by   on (May 12, 2014, 19:40 GMT)

He should have been picked by any of the franchises at the auction itself.. he is far better player to be ignored.. all d very best david..

Posted by sujithsubramanian on (May 12, 2014, 19:37 GMT)

This is not great news from looking things from the team's perspective. Why buy yet another batsman in this already strong enough CSK's batting side? Now where would he fit in? CSK's rhythm have been good, with Faf finding some form in the last couple of games. You wouldn't want David to replace any of Bazz,Dwayne or Faf. If they were looking for the best option to select from the unsold auction players list, I wonder how come they never happen to see Vernon Philander who is an outstanding bowler? He is exactly the type of foreign bowler CSK really want to win this year's title. Any day, Vernon Philander is very consistent and can beat the batsmen quite frequently. Excellent death-overs specialist + a handy all-rounder. A bad choice picking up David Hussey, in my opinion. Anyone agree?

Posted by   on (May 12, 2014, 19:28 GMT)

He would be a maxwell for CSK. . Hope the best... He s such a power hitter who sends out of the park... He will be a handy pick since D hussey in urge to prove himself to survive for another 2 yrs... vaanga hussey Anna. . Vanthu neengalum whistle podunga...

Posted by Cricketfan11111 on (May 12, 2014, 19:16 GMT)

Badree is a good spinner but his fielding is suspect and he is a tail end batter. In pitches where and an additional spinner is needed it will be David who will replace Hilf. David is a good allrounder and a superb fielder as well.

Posted by ramz30380 on (May 12, 2014, 19:04 GMT)

Now one Huss for another!!! I thought tht CSK wont take any replacements at all for Bravo as they were doing just fine with the team..... the only place is to take tht of Badree / Hilfy - Hussey is a decent bowler a squashbuckling batsman and a terrific fielder! Good addition to the team. His exp will help. Finally the younger Hussey will know wht it is to be part of a winning IPL squad!!!!

Posted by bowlfordecoy on (May 12, 2014, 18:48 GMT)

This is brilliant move by CSK. What backup have we got for smith and Baz. There is always a chance , one cud get injured which would have come as a blow to CSK. Moreover david hussey replacing samuel badree could be a good gamble which would mean manhas out and another indian bowler in. Added bonuses are husseys amazing fielding skills which would still exist despite his long absence and his captaincy skills too. Still cant forget how the husseys won the t20 knock match against pakistan. If he joins smith , baz and faf in playing 11 , this is a batting lineup to chase any total.

Posted by   on (May 12, 2014, 18:44 GMT)

Why ?? CSK needs a good fast bowler...y mike hussey???

Posted by VenkyN on (May 12, 2014, 18:42 GMT)

Very strange signing... Hussey is alright, but CSK's weakness currently is their bowling, and they could have looked to beef that up !

Posted by YesCricketer on (May 12, 2014, 18:40 GMT)

Wudda been happier if Badri was chosen. But this is a BRILLIANT move by CSK. They're batting line up is already strong. Just add Batting David Hussey to it and it makes look stronger. He can either replace Faf and adds to bowling as well( Like Bravo) . Or he can be chosen alongside Faf,replacing Ben/Badree and make it a VERY VERY strong batting line up. Ashwin, Ishwar, Jaddu, Mohit, Raina, Hussey, Smith can do the bowling.

my CSK team : Smith, Mcculum, Raina, Dhoni, Faf, Hussey, Jadeja, Ashwin, Ishwar, Mohit

and the 11th man shud be based on the wicket. Bowling Track - Nehra / Ronit More, Batting Track - Baba Aparjith/ Manhas

OMG. This is a dream team !

Posted by   on (May 12, 2014, 18:39 GMT)

CSK's strategy behind this story. Hussey captained Maxwell for a long time in BigbashLeague t20 (victoria)

Posted by Cricketfan11111 on (May 12, 2014, 18:39 GMT)

That's good news. Welcome David to CSK family. I'm sure Micheal Hussey will miss the CSK environment where he was sooooo successful.

Posted by D-Coach on (May 12, 2014, 18:34 GMT)

Expect 2 from Faf / Mac / David based on best current form. There could be some possible research David Recruit. All the best David and CSK.

Posted by   on (May 12, 2014, 18:32 GMT)

this is fantastic replacement by csk david will give more power in lower order and can ball a bit and excellent fielder too

Posted by TurboKat on (May 12, 2014, 18:24 GMT)

That's great news only if Dhoni bhai lets him play. He will be a good replacement for Faf or Hily depending on whether they want an extra batsman or not.Very capable of carting the spinners out of the park. Welcome to the CSK team/bench D.Huss.

Posted by vikumsd007 on (May 12, 2014, 18:22 GMT)

Csk should have gone for a fast bowler or an all rounder but a good decision as Hussey is an experienced T20 campaigner If you cannot get the older one get the younger one

Posted by   on (May 12, 2014, 18:21 GMT)

I dont see David Huss doing anything beyond warming bench baz smith faf cant replaced so toss is between hilfy badree huss bowling would become if they are replaced
