Kevin Pietersen's weakness against left-arm spinners with varying degrees of experience is well known. Tonight it was Akshar Patel's turn to outfox him. Pietersen was a run away from his first fifty in nine attempts in this IPL when he faced the Gujarat spinner. The ball landed on middle and off and Pietersen was playing for the angle rather than the turn. This time the ball did turn and Pietersen played down the wrong line and was bowled. Pietersen's wobbly follow through after the shot showed just how he was outwitted by the bowler.

Not too long after Kieron Pollard's stupendous boundary catch in Ahmedabad, further north in Delhi, Beuran Hendricks took another memorable catch. The South African, playing his first IPL match, was only beginning to adjust to his new surroundings when he was called into action. M Vijay was looking to clip the ball over fine leg but didn't quite get the distance. Hendricks ran several yards back from the 30-yard circle and kept his gaze on the ball as it swirled. He caught it easily and his celebration was as restrained as it could get. Though it wasn't as spectacular as Pollard's, it was a tough catch nevertheless, one that would really test a fielder's judgement.

Glenn Maxwell also took a boundary catch to remember, but he very nearly let it slip. Wayne Parnell lofted Hendricks down towards wide long-off where Maxwell was standing at the edge of the rope. He stretched his arms to the right but the ball slipped out of his palm. He then had the presence of mind to take it one handed in the second attempt after the juggle, while still staying within the boundary. Maxwell's muted celebration - like Hendricks' - suggested that the catch hadn't yet sunk in. He quietly walked back to his position.

Manan Vohra's recent knocks made everyone wonder why he was benched for so long. He made another emphatic statement by comfortably outscoring Virender Sehwag in their opening stand. After whamming a flat six over long-off off Wayne Parnell off the front foot, he nonchalantly punched one off the back foot off Mohammad Shami. Vohra shifted his weight on the back foot to an off cutter and easily carved it over deep cover with minimum effort, the shot having come off the meat of the bat.

Wayne Parnell delivered a fine inswinging yorker which Akshar Patel was struggling to keep out. At normal speed it looked like the ball deflected off the boot before racing towards the third-man boundary. It was given as runs by the umpire Kumar Dharmasena, who turned down the appeal for lbw. However, replays showed that there was no bat involved, and the ball may have hit the leg stump. Had Akshar been given out, it could have made a difference to the outcome as Kings XI would have lost their sixth, with not much batting to come.
