Big boys in another knockout battle

Match facts

Start time 2000 local (1430 GMT)

Big Picture

Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians in a knockout is a familiar scenario in the IPL. However, a different narrative had tempted the tournament as recently as a week ago. MS Dhoni's men were cantering to a top-two finish until their bowling was found out, and elsewhere Yusuf Pathan rained mayhem. Rohit Sharma was leading a group of individuals that could not rally as a team, until faced with an improbable task. Sunday's heroics will be difficult to set aside and in many ways, they will benefit from turning up at Brabourne Stadium believing the first ball to be 14.5.

Dhoni is a captain who enjoys the camera. Clever jabs with commentators at the toss and a clear post-game analysis during the presentation are just as much part of his game as his brutal hits down the ground. During a three-match losing streak, his reasons flitted between fielders shelling opportunities to the new ball not being profitably utilised.

Super Kings function on belief, perhaps more so than any other team. Their batting is capable of posting any total, their captain is capable of finishing any game and their spinners are canny enough to stump any opposition. However, the form of their seamers would be a worry. They were a vital part of Super Kings' success in the UAE, but lately the number of overs they get have dwindled in accordance to their potency.

Mumbai are strong enough to exploit those weaknesses, but it depends on which Mumbai turns up. They have travelled the majority of the tournament with an underperforming batting-order. Michael Hussey, with his return to form, will be a valuable asset against his former team. Besides the obvious positive of Corey Anderson in hitting form, the most heartening outcome has been their Indian players responding to gruelling pressure. Ambati Rayudu and Aditya Tare can expect the challenge to only get steeper.

League meetings

"No, no, no, not really. Losing the first five [games] was not easy. We couldn't take that defeat," claimed a vehement Rohit after his side overcame their final hurdle in exhilarating fashion. He was speaking about Mumbai's winless run in the UAE, which included a seven-wicket loss to Super Kings. A fragile top-order and their big-hitters' indifferent form contributed to a total of 141. Rohit made a half-century, but his efforts were comfortably topped by Brendon McCullum who made 71 off 53. The chase meandered into the final overs with an off-colour Faf du Plessis searching for form, but MS Dhoni got the better of Lasith Malinga in the 18th over to quell Mumbai's hopes.

The Wankhede was brimming with emotion on Sunday and Mumbai had drawn strength from it, but earlier in the tournament Super Kings, inspired by Dhoni's final-over theatrics, broke Mumbai's 10-match winning streak at home. Ambati Rayudu's 43-ball 59 set up a target of 158. Dwayne Smith replied with a sedate 57. Amid dubious umpiring decisions and basic spills in the field, Lasith Maliga uprooted three batsmen in eight balls across two overs as the game went down to the last over. However, with Kieron Pollard bowling, Dhoni secured the requisite 11 runs with considerable flourish.

Watch out for...

The combination of R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, when on song, can curb runs and thereby swindle wickets and even time out of the game. Ashwin is often asked to tackle the powerplay overs and Jadeja is not shy of bowling in the death. A fruitful association prefaces most victories. However, an off day for them provides stark reading: Ashwin's economy rate in lost matches nudges past eight and Jadeja's soars towards 10. The left-arm spinner has generally had a tough tournament aside from two four-fors.

Kieron Pollard was coming off a long injury layoff at the start of the IPL. Similarly Rohit Sharma had made starts but struggled to capitalise in the run-up to the tournament. Those cobwebs hung around both players and though there were sparks of brilliance, consistency still evades them. Their batting positions have been debated to exhaustion. After playing a minimal part on Sunday, both will be hungry.

Stats and trivia

  • Super Kings seamers were bowling an average of 10.5 overs per innings in the first nine matches. Since then they average only 6.2 overs

  • For bowlers who have bowled more than 50 overs this season, Harbhajan Singh's economy rate (6.45) is second only to Sunil Narine (5.91)

  • This will be the first IPL knockout match held at Brabourne Stadium. It has hosted seven matches and runs are scored at 8.54 per over

Rohit should not make Pollard bowl during the death. Not just because he is out of touch as far as his bowling is concern, but he is sorely missed in the "field" when he is bowling. Remember the catch of Dhoni he took last season in the last over when CSK looked comfortable to win? This man is capable of changing the course of the match by his fielding skills (too).

@srilankancricketfan,, CSK do not deserve a spot ? LoL . Are u sure bro? they have entered semis everytime. I think u r frustrated because there is no srilankan player in the squad.

I am a CSK fan but i feel MI has the edge today as they are on form with wins recently and both eliminators being played in Mumbai. CSK is a good team but we have peaked earlier in the tournament along with Punjab. So, it is going to be a MI vs KKR final if my calculations go right. Lets see what happens.

  • Sri_Lankan_Cricket_Fan on May 28, 2014, 9:08 GMT

CSK is the most highly over rated IPL team. They do not even deserve a spot in semi finals. I wish RR selected for semis instead of CSK.

Mumbai have everything favoring. Crowd, momentum, believe, hunger. Our bowling has been doing good job even after departure of Zak and Malinga. Batsman are in good touch. We have got out opening combination right. I would recommend to bring back Praveen Kumar in place of Ojha. He was able to keep Smith in trouble. Bowl 2 overs of Cory at PP, do not bowl Pollard at the depth over. The only thing what would matter against CSK is the batting period between over 8-14. Teams try to build inning and eventually end up 160. We hunt need to keep on scoring 8 runs during that period, play calculating shots. Toss will matter a lot, as chasing team will be favorite. MI is good chasing team but if we are put on to bat, we need to score 190 to put CSK in pressure. Even after 5 straight loss I had that feeling MI will reach finals. Hopefully it comes true. All the best guys. #DilSeMI

  • N.Kumaresan on May 28, 2014, 7:21 GMT

CSK will demolish MI in today Match. Hopefully most run getter in all IPL Season Mr.Raina will perform.

  • on May 28, 2014, 6:02 GMT

I don't see MI losing this game!!! Momentum is on there side and they've playing in Mumbai!! They always play well against CSK and they a very good record against them!!! I am sure Mumbai crowd will do the 50 percent Work and rest will be taken care by MI team!!! MI will win!!!

  • on May 28, 2014, 5:08 GMT

CSK should pack a surprise by playing Baba Aparajith, he is too good a off-spinner to sit out. With 2 lefties Hussey and Anderson this might be a good option . Play Hilfi instead of Badri and let McCullum take the slips.

  • D-Coach on May 28, 2014, 4:55 GMT

Overall two weak links in this IPL7 for CSK compare to the expectation. One is Dhoni and next is Ashwin. CSK wants these two to step-up and show their skills. This will make Team CSK totally different outfit.

All the Best CSk :) Hard Luck Mumbai ;)

  • D-Coach on May 28, 2014, 4:53 GMT

The reason for CSK being here (3rd Position) is Dhoni. The way he dragged the game to his end over heroics, etc. That's past and he is in good shape to win the title after RCB match. It will never going to be easy for CSK as they go the momentum so late in this edition. Cricket is the game played in two different boats between win or lose. That is confidence. MI, KxiP and KKR are the most confidence team ahead. Whatever Lions are lions. They just need extraordinary confidence to beat this team become a king in the ring. If CSK won this IPL, they truly deserve the best team anywhere because of the hear and peak from other teams. My CSK team:

    1. D.Smith 2. B.McCullam 3. S.Raina 4. F.DuPlesis 5. M.Dhoni 6. D.Hussy 7. R.Jadeja 8. R.Ashwin 9. I.Pandey 10. M.Sharma 11. A.Nehra

We do not see any match winning effort from the foreign bowlers in CSK. So there is no use of doing experiment on bowling at this stage. But CSK should strengthen their batting power to power. Kill in middle overs ;)

  • ambsmams on May 28, 2014, 4:38 GMT

CSK needs to ensure that it takes all catches that come its way - even half chances. We saw Faf and Raina take some excellent catches initially; however, I see Ashwin drop a few in slips. Either he is not concentrating or not practicing adequately. Bowling in the death is a constant worry for any side led by MSD. He doesn't pay much attention to that.

  • anver777 on May 28, 2014, 4:30 GMT

Will it be a "Mission Impossible-2" after their improbable win to qualify for playoffs... Who ever wins, no doubt there will be a tough fight for supremacy from both CSK & MI !!!! Best of Luck for both teams !!!!!

  • Suja59 on May 28, 2014, 4:17 GMT

on paper, both have equally strong teams. On current form and momentum, MI seems to have an edge. That said, the final playing eleven will determine the outcome. Despite Tare's heroics in the last match, I would not play him and instead pick Praveen Kumar. MI need to field 5 bowlers. You cant restrict CSK with the likes of Pollard and Simmons.Likewise CSK. They are too dependent on Ashwin and Jadeja. If one of them goes for plenty, they have no backup in a specialist fifth bowler. In short the team that plays 5 specialist bowlers and 6 batsmen will have a better chance of winning today

  • ravin_cricluv on May 28, 2014, 4:04 GMT

    CSK's story.

once upon a time there was a lion which was so fearsome that it hardly had to fight to kil its prey.after 6 years it got bored and wanted to spiceup things a little.the same time a king with his brave knight and 11 warriors decided to hunt the lion by inviting in to their fortress(MUMBAI).at one point the king and men surrounded the lion and said that they are going to kill it.the lion got so happy that finally it got a real fight.

it killed all 11 warriors(MI) .then the knight(KKr)and atlast the king(Kxiip).it ultimately won the IPL trophy and happily went to forest.

  • Siva_Bala75 on May 28, 2014, 3:45 GMT

If the pitch plays true then CSK should play Hussey i/o Badree. Manhas can be then replaced by Pandey. If the pitch is dry, then Badree should play.

  • ravin_cricluv on May 28, 2014, 3:40 GMT

the important factor for MI previous year are mallinga and smith.this year they lack both and to make situation more worse, smith is in opposite team. only thing they rely on is the psychological boost they got from the winning streak and the home support.

clearly if CSK are losing today,it means CSK had played their worst match of the tournament so far.

  • ravin_cricluv on May 28, 2014, 3:33 GMT

simple formula for csk to win.

batting first -post 200+ batting 2nd -consider you are in to next round

summing it all its going to be a battle of batsmen.WIN CSK WIN

CSK is better than mumbai in playoff games because of the great MSD. csk! whistle podu

  • on May 28, 2014, 1:18 GMT

It's a home match for the MI. The crowd support would make huge difference even though on the other side there it would be Team India captain MSD. The Mumbai crowd would be cheering for the home side. If the match between KKR and KXIP is not washed out then I see a final between MI and KKR

  • on May 28, 2014, 0:42 GMT

    1. CSK is not particularly adept in setting targets; they are just excellent chasers. 2. Poor form of Ashwin & Sir hurt them badly. 3. But for Dwayne Smith, they might have been in a much worse situation. 4. But, Dhoni continues to be the best finisher in the game, as of now. The kind of Yusuf Pathans have become just a flashes in the pan, nowadays!

  • on May 27, 2014, 22:36 GMT

This game depends on who bats second, I don't see any of these two sides comfortably defending a score

  • on May 27, 2014, 22:17 GMT

I have been a fan of mi... But somewhere down the line... I support msd as well... I'd want mi to win... But if they loses, i have no regrets as they will lose to csk... But if you check the head to head stats.. Mi has more win as compared to csk.... And that by double the games that csk had won.. But you never know of the day... Sometimes you take the game away... Because it's your day... But i really want one of them to win the tournament....

  • Nampally on May 27, 2014, 20:26 GMT

In my opinion, Rohit Sharma has led MI admirably to carry them to playoffs against all odds. I had backed him for the Captaincy of India, being the most knowledgeable + a very amiable personality who can get on with his players. His leadership both on & off the field look good. Hopefully he will be named the Captain for BD series in June & also for the England Tour. With home crowd behind them, MI have a big advantage against CSK. They have lot going for them. I think it will be also a battle between 2 Captains- Dhoni vs. Sharma on the tactics, XI selection, Field placing & bowling changes. The 2 teams are closely matched but in Captaincy, Rohit is the likely winner. This is a tough one with both teams having suspect bowling but strong batting. They have to perform at their best on the day.I tip the scales in MI's side who has the momentum, Home crowd & a captain who gets the best out of his XI- Will they perform on the day depends upon the Captains. Great match awaits- Good Luck Guys!

  • Nampally on May 27, 2014, 20:14 GMT

After lack lustre display of CSK in the last 4 matches, they suddenly dropped to #4 place amongst the favourites. MI has the momentum from their successive run of wins & their grit & determination. If they carry it all the way, they may retain their title. Otherwise their success will be considered just a flash in the pan. It is entirely up to MI to show the same grit to carry them forward- a sense of urgency to Win. MI batting has really benefitted via signing of Simmons. Along with Hussey, they seem to be strong opening bats. Cory Anderson & Pollard's power hitting will boost a fine start with Rohit Sharma, Rayudu & Tare providing the backups. In bowling Bumrah has been outstanding. Anderson, Harbhajan, Ojha & Gopal provided excellent support. The bowling is the weak part of MI. But they need to take catches to keep the opposition under control. CSK is totally relying upon their 4 Indian test players. Ashwin & jadeja have faltered. Can their batting carry them remains to be seen!

Dhoni u r the Best but dont forget what happend WC T20 final with Srilanka. once match over dont think 15 or 20 runs short. so pls if u bat 1st need minimum 220+. This is knockout so MI try everything c last match MI VS RR CSK XI SMITH, FAF, RAINA, BRENDON, HUSSEY, DHONI, JADEJA, ASHWIN,MOHIT, PANDEY AND NEHRA OR SMITH, BRENDON, RAINA, FUF, HUSSEY, DHONI, JADEJA, ASHWIN,MOHIT, PANDEY AND NEHRA SMITH OR BRENDON OR RAINA 1 OR 2 NEED TO SCORE 20 BALLS 60+ RUNS BEST WISHES FOR CSK

  • BustIPL on May 27, 2014, 19:43 GMT

CSK has many indian and foreign top players and that is why tough to beat for the other IPL teams. KXP are capable to beat them due to similar blend. So, it can be interesting.

  • Lotr3 on May 27, 2014, 17:29 GMT

Watch out for Pollard, very dangerous in crunch games, also due a big one. Smith as well could be destructive for CSK. Gut feeling though, a couple lesser knowns will be the difference in the end, MI have more of those than CSK. Looking for MI to squeeze out a final over triumph.

  • NikSaid on May 27, 2014, 17:02 GMT

It took ONE inning for Yusuf to turn-around all critics. ONE inning for Robin to open and turn-around form. POLLARD IS DUE THAT ONE INNING!!!!

  • on May 27, 2014, 16:56 GMT

Home pitches have always been advantageous for MI as they got most of the matches after UAE tour made it easy for them nd based on the support of the crowd, they are more confident. CSK has been somewhat more struggling in bowling esp spin nd needs to work on fielding and middle order batting if the opening pair fails.

  • on May 27, 2014, 16:33 GMT

MI has nothing to prove. They reached playoffs without Malinga and Zaheer. On paper CSK is a much better side. But You never know.

  • on May 27, 2014, 16:20 GMT

The UAE suited seam.. those stats would be mirrored by other teams. Spurious association of stats. Yes, their seamers are bad.. but because they are bad.. not b/c they have lost form as such. Relatively-speaking though, they have all lost form in every team as the pitches are slower and suit spin (if good) in India.

  • on May 27, 2014, 16:17 GMT

with the form that Mumbai team is in. csk should watch out because they have belief in themselves and with self belief that was much needed for Corey Anderson Mumbai is the team to watch out for.

  • srinideva on May 27, 2014, 16:12 GMT

CSK must go with smith, mac, faf and (Badree or Hilfi) based on the pitch condition. D Hussey is not going to get too many balls to face anyway. Raina is a big match player. Hope he do well in this year too...

  • on May 27, 2014, 15:56 GMT

Hussey has been involve in all final playing with csk .

    - Big match player for both sides Mi - M Hussey,Kieron pollard,Corey Anderson and Rohit Sharma Csk - Msd , Raina, Faf du plessis,Dwayne smith - Prediction- csk starts as favourite having more and dangerous and big match player than Mi . 2) Mike hussey has an average of 58 playing for superkings in all knockout match. 3)if Hussey score 50+ team tend to win all matches 3) dwayne smith has always a part of winning side for (Mi , csk) against same opposition in league stage but not in knockout stage playing for Mi his side has won only one out 3 matches against csk . 3) suresh raina has score 2 50+ score against csk in knockout stage . Score possiblity - Mi average score against csk is 140 but csk average score is 160+ in knockout stage . 2 ) Mi have lost in brabourne stadium in ipl final against csk . Match Prediction - csk starts as favourite but hoping for a turn around against csk.

  • ladycricfan on May 27, 2014, 15:53 GMT

Faulkner buckled under pressure. CSK should try to bowl Nehra in the death overs. He has experince. Should finish Pandey's quota early in the innings.

CSK XI: Smith, Faf, Raina, Brendon, Hussey, Dhoni,Jadeja Ashwin, Mohit, Pandey , Nehra.

CSK will win easily. For MI miracles don't happen everyday. Without Malinga the bowling is weakened. Only Bajji have been difficult to hit.

CSK is in the familiar territory- the play offs. Need to beat all three teams to lift the trophy. Go CSK.

  • on May 27, 2014, 15:40 GMT

Csk Can should pull it off. Dhoni and co should have tricks in the bag and pull them out. Like rock them with 3 wickets in the power play or start with a bang in our pp. Csk please take sweet revenge of last year's final. Thalaiva has to rock. Csk go clinch the title this time.

  • on May 27, 2014, 15:15 GMT

Mumbai need to sneak in one more fast bowler, either PK for an Indian batsman/spin bowler or M de Lange in place of Husssey/Simmons.

  • srinideva on May 27, 2014, 15:11 GMT

LOL...Rohit is talking about CSK`s inconsistency. If not Corey, they wouldn`t be in the finals now. Talk big Mr. Rohit and Gautam Gambhir. Don`t expect the CSK bowlers bowling the Full toss ball on legs like mr. faulkner did. wake up and prepare well. CSK boys are in your town to say something about the last year`s final...Bring it on....

  • on May 27, 2014, 14:53 GMT

I am a MI fan but the only area where MI beat CSK is self beloef .CSK have lost 3 out of 4 games whereas MI have won 4 out of 4 .MI have to go with five bowlers if they have to win .I kniw I will be criticized for saying this but pollard has to be dropped for de lange .We cannot have 4 overs of pollard/anderson as they are too expensive .If one of the bowlers has an off day then they will bowl even more .Both are too expensive .Pollard has performed well with the bat but CSK KKR KXIP have much better batting lineups than RR .The five bowler formula worked for MI .Also I would get Praveen in place of Ojha/Gopal .It will not happen but if MI are to have realistic chances only one of Anderson or Pollard should play .If Malinga was there MI s chances would be doubled .

Upto Ashwin Can Bat Any day CSK can get 220 runs 3 fast bowlers - Mohit, Pandey, Nehra 1 part time Medium Pacer -Smith ( minimum 1 over) 2 front line spinners - Ashwin, Jadeja 2 part time spinners - Raina, Hussey( both minimum 1 over each) Fuf also can ball If Brendon is not available replace Helfenhaus and replace Mahanas for Panday or Nehra Very important if CSK bat 1st pls DHONI don't slow runrate 6 overs 60 run try without losing a wicket ( 1 wicket still ok) 10 overs 100+ runs 2 wicket is ok 15 overs 160+ runs 3 or 4 wicket ok 20 overs 220+ runs Next matches are do or die so some one or 2 or 3 need fire (like Y pathan or Anderson) from the beginning s/rate of 250+ May be Smith, Raina, Brendon, Hussey or Dhoni If Csk Chase Pls DHONI do your math to finish the game in 18 overs. CSK has been fiddling with their 5th bowler since Bravo got injured... They have to stop the fiddling now. Experimentation time is over ...

No to be biased as a West Indian, but Badree was the best of the 3 players fiddled around with. I'm not really surprised that the # 1 20/20 bowler in the world won that competition ..

He will see if Hastings or Hilfenhaus gets in ahead of Badree .... based on performance they really should not ..

My 12 for the big night CSK - Dwanye, Faf, Raina, MSD, Hussey,Jadeja, Manhas, Ashwin, Mohit, Badree/Hilfy, Nehra (vs) MI - Hussey, Simmons, Rohit, Corey, Rayudu, Pollard, Tare, Bhajji, Gopal/Suyal, Bumrah, Ohja

MI have made it only on their home ground advantage! They have been poor travelers but they made sure that they won't miss home advantage and raise to next level with fan support! Once again they have two shots at home before finals! That is their biggest advantage over CSK on 28th.

Mumbai need to sneak in one more fast bowler, either PK for an Indian batsman/spin bowler or M de Lange in place of Husssey/Simmons.
