Pepsi Indian Premier League, 37th match: Chennai Super Kings v Rajasthan Royals at Ranchi, May 13, 2014
Chennai Super Kings won by 5 wickets
13 May 2014 - day/night match (20-over match)

It's game time. Ian Bishop says Royals were out warming up an hour an 15 minutes before the start. CSK began their drills 30 minutes before.

Rajasthan Royals are opening with Shane Watson today. Ankit Sharma is his partner. Two googlies first up from Royals.

CSK are opening the bowling with legspinner Samuel Badree.

3.50 pm Ganesh Ramachan: "Why Vijay Shankar? Manhas never got a chance actually. Anyways, it doesn't matter cos top four either wins or loses the match for CSK. This slot is just to fill in 11. Badrinath would've played the whole season without scoring had he had his base price lower than 1 Crore."

Mridul Shandily: "So Rajasthan Royals are playing 4 spinners on the slow Ranchi track. Ankit, Tambe, Bhatia and Kevon Cooper. "

AshDubai: "Why there is so much hue and cry about dropping Samson? As we know RR, they like to give chance to more players and have the ideal combo towards the "business end". With the current position, they can afford to do so too."

Toss, 3.30 pm CSK are playing a home game in Ranchi. Well at least it's home to their captain MS Dhoni. He's lost the toss, though, and Rajasthan Royals are batting first.

CSK have made one change, giving an IPL debut to batsman Vijay Shankar and dropping Mithun Manhas, who has failed to have an impact so far.

Ananya: "Poor Manhas..... he sacrificed his wicket in the last match because Dhoni wanted the strike in the last over....."

Royals have made three changes. They dropped Sanju Samson, Kane Richardson and Rahul Tewatia, and brought in wicketkeeper Dishant Yagnik, Trinidad & Tobago allrounder Kevon Cooper and Ankit Sharma.

Ganesh: "Who is the commentator for this match? Very slow." It's George Binoy.

Farhan: "Why on earth is Sanju Samson dropped from the Playing XI?" His scores in his last five matches have been - 13, 16, 37, 34 and 20. Not bad numbers but not awesome either.

abhi: "RR surprising again , what reason for dropping sanju ? he has not scored big big but he had given decent support to middle order. Now this makes watson to come at 3 . Not sure about that."

Harish: "What a great news for TN fans, Vijay Shankar has got a match.!!"

3.15 pm Good afternoon and welcome to ESPNcricinfo's ball-by-ball coverage of the first of two games on Tuesday. No. 2 (Chennai Super Kings) take on No. 3 (Rajasthan Royals) in Ranchi. It's a three-way battle for the top two spots, between these sides and Kings XI Punjab. The teams that finish first and second in the league will have two cracks at making the final. Here's the points table.

In his preview of the game, Abhishek Purohit calls this a clash of contrasting campaigns. CSK have got to No. 2 by smashing everyone but Kings XI. Royals have reached No. 3 with three scarcely believable heists - games they had no business winning.

Late last night, news broke that CSK have a Hussey in their ranks. David, not Michael. He was brought in as a replacement for the injured Dwayne Bravo.

And if you have missed most of the IPL action over the last week (and why on earth would you?) here's a quick refresher - in pictures.

Vithu: "I wish Matt Henry is given a look in today. Badree didn't impress that much the other day, and no harm experimenting with Henry in place of the bowling foreign player. Remember he can strike the ball hard too.. "

Ash: "Hate to break it but.. Raina and Dhoni haven't fired at all this season. Both of them are short on runs. Smith and Brendon have been covering them up. Hope they raise their game today."

Spidercam: "Excellent strategy from RR. They are giving opportunities to all players and at the same time hinting that no one's position can be taken for granted."

Sharma to Smith, FOUR, shot! Smith steps out of his crease, waits for the slower one and lofts it inside out over extra cover, one-bounce four

17.2

Sharma to Smith, OUT, what a crazy shot. Smith began to play the scoop, but then saw that the ball was full and straight, and then tried to play some sort of a ramp. He ended up playing nothing and losing leg stump

SPD Smith b Sharma 9 (7m 8b 1x4 0x6) SR: 112.50

Faulkner is the new batsman ...

Jadeja to Faulkner, OUT, bowled him! Faulkner's been done by the quicker, skiddy ball that goes straight on. Faulkner tries to work the ball through square leg but misses, the ball goes off the pad and knocks back leg stump

JP Faulkner b Jadeja 1 (5m 4b 0x4 0x6) SR: 25.00

This is a lame finish from the Royals after such a promising set-up.

18.2

Jadeja to Yagnik, 1 run, Yagnik jumps back and dabs the ball towards point

Max: "What a waste this innings has been.People called it strategy.Removing both openers do you call that a strategy. Why so many changes when you are playing against one of the best teams. Now see they will not get to 150.Very sad for RR fans like me."

18.3

Jadeja to Binny, OUT, caught at long-on, the Royal slump continues. Binny simply hit it straight to du Plessis with the bottom of his bat. All very average from Rajasthan

Can Royals can up to 150? They will be sorely disappointed with anything less.

19.1

5.35 pm The Royals attack are up against a powerful and performing CSK top order. They were 84 for 1 after ten and then they slumped. Mohit Sharma's three wickets have made him the top wicket-taker in the tournament.

zia: "such a great waste of the start, i was expecting the RR to go beyond 180, CSK will sleep walk with this target." There is turn on this pitch though.

Milind: "A below average performance from RR considering the kind of start they had. Only 3 players managing to get into double figures. Hopefully, they do much better in the bowling department ! And Hoping Dhoni promotes himself up the order and give home crowd some entertainment!"

Pradeep: "this pitch seems to become much slower as it goes on, may be thats the reason RR opened with Watson.. to get some quick runs when its easier to bat..CSK top order needs to smack up as much as possible in the powerplay, else they're gonna have a tough time against thambe n co.!"

End of over 20 (8 runs) Rajasthan Royals 148/8

    • DH Yagnik 4 (6b)
    • KK Cooper 0 (0b)
