V for Vinay's Vendetta

As always, Brendon McCullum was in the mood to hit everything out of sight. As soon as Vinay Kumar was introduced in the fifth over, McCullum set about him. The first ball was upper-cut for two over point. The second was cracked over cover for four. The third met the same fate as it was steered past point. The fourth was dealt with a whip to the deep square leg rope. Possibly wanting a six now for variety, McCullum swung the fifth over midwicket. It was not short enough for him to time it, though, and the man in the deep took the catch.

Parthiv Patel saw Ashish Nehra's first ball pitched up and went for a big drive. The ball swung away, beating him by miles. Nehra walked up to Parthiv and had a few words to say. Parthiv smiled back, and pulled the next ball square for four. The third was sliced over point for another boundary. The fourth was the icing. Parthiv tried to whip one through midwicket and ended up popping it in the air. The fielder dived and got hands on the ball twice, but dropped it.

Pawan Negi could have been dismissed off any of the last three balls of the last over. He fell on the last delivery. He had heaved the fourth ball over the leg side but J Suchith put down the steepler. Mitchell McClenaghan was the culprit next, putting down the fifth at short third man. MS Dhoni missed the last one, and as the batsmen tried to sneak a bye, Negi was finally found way short of a Parthiv direct hit.

Dwayne Bravo didn't bat but dealt a telling blow to Mumbai Indians on the field. The visitors had just lost their openers when Rohit Sharma edged Pawan Negi. Suresh Raina at slip could not hold on to the sharp chance but he managed to slow it down. Seeing the ball roll towards short third man, the batsmen went for a single. Bravo swooped on to the ball and hit the stumps to catch Pollard inches short.
