Quick Facts - JP Duminy

South Africa and Delhi Daredevils allrounder JP Duminy has withdrawn himself from the tenth season of the IPL, citing "personal" reasons. Duminy informed the franchise of his decision on Monday, 16 days before the start of the tournament. The franchise has not yet named a replacement.

Although both the player and franchise did not elaborate on the reason specifically, it is understood that Duminy wanted to focus on the South Africa assignments in the near future. South Africa are currently involved in a Test series in New Zealand. They then head to England for a three-match ODI series, beginning on May 24, followed by the Champions Trophy. Their tour then continues with three T20s and four Tests.

"It has been a very difficult decision for me to make, but it was for purely personal reasons," Duminy was quoted as saying by Daredevils in a media release. "I certainly hope to play a part for the franchise in the near future."

Duminy is the fifth-highest scorer for Daredevils with 1015 runs in 38 matches at a strike rate of 130.79. He even captained the side in two matches in the previous season. Zaheer Khan, who captained them in the rest of the tournament in 2016, will again lead this season.

That the IPL ends 10 days prior to the Champions Trophy might have influenced Duminy's decision. ESPNcricinfo has also learnt that the South African players are likely to stay in the IPL till mid-May, before departing to the UK for a preparatory camp ahead of the Champions Trophy. Previously, the South African players were set to leave after May 7. A final decision on whether they would be allowed to feature in the play-off matches would be taken during the latter part of the tournament.

Daredevils are also sweating on the availability of Sri Lanka allrounder Angelo Mathews, who was bought for INR 2 crore at the auction. Mathews suffered a hamstring injury in the second T20 international against South Africa in Johannesburg in January, and has not played since, missing the subsequent T20 series in Australia and Test series at home against Bangladesh. Corey Anderson, Kagiso Rabada and Pat Cummins were Daredevils' other overseas signings at the auction.

i follow DD coz of Dravid, so looking at the current team composition, looks like DD requires an Indian all rounder who can play all the matches for the team, they cannot rely a lot on foreign players on Indian pitches, with due respect to the current team they are missing a full time all rounder. hope they fix this before too late.

Good move. Pls take rest. Be fresh for country and international assignments. The body is machine and it needs lot of charging, discharging and re-charging. Listen to your body, anyway all these money spinnig tournaments are there year round and you can pick and chose for adding a few bucks. Do not killl your self, not worth it.

JP pulls out for personal reasons. Others are there for personal reasons. Does loyalty to your team count for anything?

Zaheer has impressed with his leadership skills in last season.... If he is match fit, he needs to lead DD

Marlon Samuels would also prove to be a good option. he can bowl a bit as well and has a lot of experience. If not him then George Bailey. could make him captain as well.

Till SA players are there, they need to play QD, Billings, Morris & Rabada/Cummins.... Once SA and English players leaves, then they need to play Braithwait, Cory, Mathews and Cummins.... The problem is out of these 4, three players are of similar skills.... mediaum pace all rounders.... and again If any of those injured or out of form then DD needs to look for batsman.... They need an experienced and explosive overseas batsman in the middle..... They should not play zaheer and shami in the same match looking at foregin pacer options in their squad.... They need to use these two in rotation and preserve for key matches.... They also need to use Jayant Yadav, Shahabaz Nadeem and M Ashwin in rotation and play Mishra all the matches as he is the match winner... Samson do not get an automatic place in the starting 11.... He need to earn it with whatever options he will get during the tournament Make Karun Nair or Rishabh Pant, a captain and go all out this season!

Evin Lewis is a good replacement.

  • Shamim Ahmed on March 21, 2017, 18:07 GMT

Shahid Afridi is unemployed, take his services.

I suppose there's 2nd guessing here, and he has stated "persona reasons". But if the rumours are true that he wanted to prepare for SA's upcoming engagements then he really should not be leaving his decision this late. Both the SA & IPL schedule have been known for quite some time.

Regardless, I'm expecting DD to have another average season, just like they always do, with or without Duminy. I do like some of the suggestions below which mention Shazhad of Afg or even Paul Stirling of Ireland (a long shot compared to Shazhad who brings marketability along with exciting play).

DD mgmt. can choose Shaizad of Afghanistan who is an exciting cricketer or Imran Tahir if they need a bowler.
