Rasool eyes greater IPL exposure

Last year, Parvez Rasool signed his first IPL contract, but only played two matches for Pune Warriors. He got his first call-up to the national side, on India's ODI tour to Zimbabwe, but didn't get to play a single game. Cricket fans in India know all there is to know about Rasool's rise from a cricketing backwater, and many of them will have followed his domestic career, but most have barely had a chance to watch him play.

Rasool hopes that will change over the course of the upcoming IPL season. Signs so far at his new IPL franchise, Sunrisers Hyderabad, have been promising. The coaching staff, he said, have already made him feel welcome.

"Before the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, [Sunrisers' coach] Tom Moody messaged me, saying 'I heard your domestic Twenty20 tournament is about to start', and wished me luck," Rasool said. "He was keeping an eye on all our scores."

Rasool's performance in the tournament, captaining a Jammu & Kashmir side that didn't win a single match, must have pleased Moody. Bowling his full quota in all five matches, Rasool finished with an economy rate of 5.75, topped his team's run charts with 139 in five matches, and scored his first-ever T20 half-century, against Punjab.

It was the third time Rasool had faced Punjab in the 2013-14 season, and it gave him another opportunity to catch up with Harbhajan Singh. Rasool had already played against Harbhajan in the Ranji Trophy quarter-finals and during the zonal phase of the Vijay Hazare Trophy, and had been his team-mate in the Irani Trophy and the Deodhar Trophy.

"I've spent maximum time with Bhajji pa, and spoken to him about my bowling," Rasool said. "I feel I've picked up a lot, two-three important things. He helped me a lot with my straighter one. At that time, it used to come slowly off the wicket. He suggested that, I could go a little quicker through the last three-four steps of my run-up, and that would help me get a bit more speed off the pitch."

If Rasool gets an opportunity, this delivery should come in handy during the IPL. He said he has also been working on his approach as a Twenty20 bowler.

"You get quite a lot of time in four-day games and even in 50-over cricket," he said. "You don't have that in T20. And you have to read the batsman. You have to adjust quickly. I watch a lot of matches, see what plans bowlers use, and try to work on those things in the nets."

The IPL, Rasool said, has a massive following in Jammu & Kashmir. "Everyone watches it there, and last year, they were following the Pune Warriors matches closely, waiting to see when I would play. This time, I hope l get a chance early on for Sunrisers, and quickly cement my place in the team."

Rasool will get good opportunities this season with SRH as he is the only off spinner to support two awesome leg spinners SRH have (Amit Mishra and Karn Sharma).on a turning tracks or a few left handed batsmen in the opposition might give a chance for all 3 of the above in playing eleven.

SRH has lot of talent this time. With Finch,Warner,Dhawan,Sammy,Steyn,Mishra in the team they are a real contender this time. Ideal XI-

    1. Warner 2.Finch 3. Dhawan 4.N.Ojha 5.Sammy 6.I.Pathan 7.K.Sharma/Rasool 8. Mishra 9. B.Kumar 10. Steyn 11.Ishant

These are exciting prospects coming out for India. He grew up playing without much support/ facilities. If trained well, he will shine. He should be given an opportunity to prove his case.

@Rajeshj- "pa" is a short for "paji". Paji means elder brother in Punjabi.

@Rajeshj ... Pa means older brother in Punjabi. Rasool addressed Harbhajan as an older brother when he called him Bhajji pa. I hope this helps clarify. Cheers.

@RajeshJ...When Rasool addressed Harbhajan Singh as Bhajji pa, it meant older brother not uncle. Pa is a Punjabi word for older brother. I hope it clarifies.

  • POSTED BY on | April 12, 2014, 13:36 GMT

@ Rajeshj, you are wrong. Though this news report also spell it as "pa", but it is in fact "bha" or to say "paa", short for bhaji (brother) or "paaji" the way it is pronounced in punjabi. Bhajji being punjabi and people in J&K also knows fair bit of punjabi, it is all but natural for Rasool to call Bhajji as Bhaji Pa.

@ 504429641 srh should pick rasool when opponents team consists more number of left handed batsmen I.e against teams like rcb ..or otherwise they should pick karan ..I think rasool is more capable hitter than karan which should press his case more

  • POSTED BY on | April 12, 2014, 8:04 GMT

Rasool isnt as good as ashwin or mishra. Look at his fc record . His bowling avg is over 30 in ranji pitches wer as ashwin and mishra n ojha r too good for india in subcontinent. Its tough for rasool he should first improve his bowling performance in first class..

  • POSTED BY Rajeshj on | April 12, 2014, 7:05 GMT

Rasool is 25 years old and Harbhajan is 33 years old.. they have just 8 years of difference in age.. Is Parvez right in calling Harbhajan as Bhajji'pa (I think 'pa' means uncle in Hindi.. I might be wrong)..

  • POSTED BY 504429641 on | April 12, 2014, 5:35 GMT

@kohli_is_future - My personal choice SRH XI is close to yours but why do you think Rasool will not get too many chances? SRH should play either Rasool or Karan according to the opposition. Last IPL, SRH faced issues when opposition contains a lot of left handed batsmen (Since left handed batsmen play leggies well). SRH even tried to give parttimer Vihari a couple of overs instead of bowling karan sharma. This time SRH has an offspinner in Rasool. So he should get fairly good chances this time. I would say half matches, take Rasool and remaining half, take Karan.

  • POSTED BY on | April 12, 2014, 5:24 GMT

We should stop saying that because he is from J&K, he should be played. If we do that, not long days will be gone by when people will say that he got there through special treatment. He has reached at this stage with his talent and I am sure he will go far if he keep performing. Luck also plays a big part. Pujara got out cheaply in ZIM and has not been considered again for ODIs. If Rasool had failed in ZIM it would have been a full stop on his career. And if he would have succeeded, people still would not have noticed saying it was only against ZIM. I wish him luck and may he get more games this time with SRH

Rasool has really played well for J and K in the past few domestic seasons and he can be the allrounder that India has been looking for. I hope he gets the chances he deserves. He can use the IPL to showcase his talent and get selected in the Indian team. Playing alongside Warner, Finch, Steyn, Sammy will really help him. SRH should play Steyn, B. Kumar, I. Pathan, Mishra, P. Rasool as their 5 bowlers. It looks like a very good bowling attack. SRH is one of the most balanced teams in this IPL and is a favorite for the trophy.

Rishi Dhawan & Rasool both are very good prospects for India. Both should be handled and developed carefully. Dhawan is a rare fast bowling allrounder present in India. I hope he will fulfills his potential in future.

Even if he does well, he wont get picked in the Indian side. CSK should have bought him, then even an average IPL season would have got him a place in the India side. Mohit Sharma has already played a T20 final ahead of Shami.

Ashwin , who represents India in all the formats rose to fame only through IPL . I am sure Rasool will grab the oppurtunity through Sun Risers and get recognised .He can atleast be tried in one dayers to get exposed to international cricket , which is a differant ball game from local tournaments.

  • POSTED BY Siva_Bala75 on | April 11, 2014, 13:22 GMT

Rasool can not survive unless he brings in variations. In the shorter formats you need lot more variations- the vanilla off-spin is suitable only for tests. He is a decent bat though.

  • POSTED BY espncricinfomobile on | April 11, 2014, 12:31 GMT

This guy deserves bigger stage. India could have tested him against Zimbabwe. You just need to grab the opportunity with both hands. IPL might be the road to world stage. Best wishes from Nepal.

Rasool is one of the those utility cricketers whom the Indians fans have been waiting to play and, most importantly, do well (lot like Irfan Pathan). He has the skills to do well in the limited over cricket games; hope he gets the games, and don't get flat in all the hype that surrounds him
