Australia in India ODI Series - 5th ODI

India v Australia

Australia won by 9 wickets (with 145 balls remaining)

8.30 am local Hello and a very warm welcome to Cricinfo's live coverage of the fifth ODI between India and Australia at Vadodara.

News from the middle is that India have won the toss and they will bat. Thats two consecutive wins with the coin for Mahendra Singh Dhoni, and he had no hesitation to put his batsmen in. He did that at Chandigarh and India won a game. It remains to be seen what happens here at the IPCL ground.

I'm Jamie Alter, and along with George Binoy later in the morning will be your commentator for the day.

A crucial game, needless to day. If Australia win, there's no way they can lose the series. India need to prevent them doing that and make it 2-2 heading over to Nagpur.

Both sides have fielded unchanged sides.

There's less grass on this pitch than on the one in Chandigarh, and it looks a a batting paradise. That equates to runs, a good amount of them, and a tough day for the bowlers. A very flat pitch. (No hitting the high notes here!)

Incidentally, Sachin Tendulkar becomes the second player after Sri Lanka's Sanath Jayasuriya to feature in 400 ODIs. You can read a bit of what he had to say about "just another match" here.

And you can also read Anand Vasu's preview of this match.

We're not far away from the start. Do stay with us.

Let me quickly remind you about Slogout, the new online cricket game from Cricinfo. (Its one of my favorite past-times.) Play now!

8.50 am local Tendulkar received a trophy for completing 400 ODIs. There's a good crowd turned out.

8.59 am local All ready for the start? I am, and so are the players. India's openers are out in the middle, having a chat with Ricky Ponting as a swarm of dragonflies buzz around them. And there's Rahul Dravid with the pads on sitting on the players' balcony.

Brett Lee has the new ball and will bowl to Sourav Ganguly, with two slips waiting. The umpires call play and off Lee goes!

0.1

Lee to Ganguly, no run, good length, a slow ball to start off, smack on off stump and Ganguly is early into his defensive shot

0.2

Lee to Ganguly, no run, slow ball again, a touch fuller outside off stump and Ganguly pushes into the covers

This looks to be a sluggish surface, the ball not coming onto the bat well

0.3

Lee to Ganguly, 1 wide, not working up any pace at all, just 135ks and its very, very wide of off stumps for India's first run

0.3

Lee to Ganguly, 4 byes, dobbler outside off stump, pitching on a length and wobbling off the seam, Ganguly is beaten, the ball dies on Gilchrist and evades him and first slip

0.4

Lee to Ganguly, OUT, oh thats just plain ridiculous! Lee bangs in a short ball on middle and leg, Ganguly gets up and plays it down into the midwicket region and sets off, Hodge swoops across, Tendulkar comes down a few steps and says go back, but Ganguly's halfway down the track and cant get back to his crease and Gilchrist just has to take an easy return over the stumps and whip off the bails

SC Ganguly run out 0 (5m 4b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

The single wasnt really on with Hodge covering good ground. Both Ganguly and Tendulkar, after all those ODIs, still cant call for a single. Here's Dravid.

0.5

Lee to Dravid, OUT, thats plumb! Dravid goes for a first-ball duck! Lee pitches full on middle and off and gets the ball to swing on, Dravid tries to play it back straight while hopping back, gets stuck in the crease and is caught dead in front of leg! The ball stayed a touch low but thats out anywhere in the world

R Dravid lbw b Lee 0 (1m 1b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

Thats two of the Big Three gone for zero. One remains, in his 400th ODI. Lee on a roll.

Yuvraj Singh in as early as the first over.

0.6

Lee to Yuvraj Singh, no run, short of a length outside off stump, well left alone

Great over for Australia. Bad coordination from Tendulkar and Ganguly. Dravid got one that stayed low.

End of over 1 (5 runs) India 5/2 (RR: 5.00)
Yuvraj Singh    0* (1b)      B Lee    1-0-1-1
SR Tendulkar    0* (0b)

Here's Mitchell Johnson, left-arm over the stumps

1.1

Johnson to Tendulkar, no run, full outside off stump, Tendulkar eases into a push to cover

1.2

Johnson to Tendulkar, no run, back of a length on middle and off, sits up and Tendulkar hops, shuffles and defends it back to Johnson

1.3

Johnson to Tendulkar, no run, good length on middle and leg, turned well but right to square leg

1.4

Johnson to Tendulkar, no run, fuller now, getting it to move in, Tendulkar works it from off stump to that man at square leg again, failing to beat the field

1.5

Johnson to Tendulkar, FOUR, overpitched outside off stump, Tendulkar shimmies forward and threads the gap between the covers for the first boundary off the bat, thats a nice shot

1.6

Johnson to Tendulkar, no run, checks his length now, holding it back and the ball stops on Tendulkar, already into his shot, and he checks it watchfully to mid-off

A sluggish pitch, batting may not be so easy after all.

End of over 2 (4 runs) India 9/2 (RR: 4.50)
SR Tendulkar    4* (6b 1x4)      MG Johnson    1-0-4-0
Yuvraj Singh    0* (1b)      B Lee    1-0-1-1

2.1

Lee to Yuvraj Singh, 1 run, pitched full and wide, allowing Yuvraj to get off the mark with a free-flowing drive backward of point for one

2.2

Lee to Tendulkar, no run, good length, pitching outside and going away slightly as Tendulkar judges the length and bounce and leaves it comfortably

2.3

Lee to Tendulkar, no run, a touch fuller outside off stump and now Tendulkar comes forward and defends it carefully into the covers

2.4

Lee to Tendulkar, no run, awkward bounce! Lee bowls this one full and much slower and it pitches and basically rolls past Tendulkar, leaving off the front foot, to Gilchrist

2.5

Lee to Tendulkar, no run, effort ball from Lee, pitching short and lifting past Tendulkar's shoulders as he drops the bat and lets it pass ... a slow ball but good carry from Lee

2.6

Lee to Tendulkar, 1 wide, fuller length, very wide of off stump and moving away .. and its called wide

2.6

Lee to Tendulkar, no run, top ball! Full and moving away, luring Tendulkar into a half-hearted drive, lunging the front foot out and missing the line of the ball completely, good swing from Lee

End of over 3 (2 runs) India 11/2 (RR: 3.66)
SR Tendulkar    4* (11b 1x4)      B Lee    2-0-3-1
Yuvraj Singh    1* (2b)      MG Johnson    1-0-4-0

Johnson to Yuvraj now. One slip and a floating fifth slip. Major issues with the sightscreen. Yuvraj not impressed. What legend is behind there, obstructing his vision?

3.1

Johnson to Yuvraj Singh, no run, back of a length, wide of off stump, Yuvraj leaves it and the ball carries low to Gilchrist behind the stumps again ... batting not easy out there

3.2

Johnson to Yuvraj Singh, no run, fuller length, not there to be driven and so Yuvraj gets forward quickly and defends to point, 'WAIT' is his call to Tendulkar

3.3

Johnson to Yuvraj Singh, no run, full and wide, Yuvraj square-drives to backward point where Clarke misfields, but the batsman dont chance his arm given what happened in the opening over

3.4

Johnson to Yuvraj Singh, no run, tight delivery, hitting the right areas and moving in ever so slightly, Yuvraj hurriedly gets behind the line and defends back to Johnson

3.5

Johnson to Yuvraj Singh, 1 wide, back of a length this time, moving away wide of off stump and Yuvraj stands and flirts, connecting with nothing but air, wide is the call

3.5

Johnson to Yuvraj Singh, OUT, edged and well taken! Johnson bowls another short delivery, it sits up and Yuvraj stands leaden-footed as he goes for an airy shot outside off stump, theres the thinnest of under-edges which Gilchrist holds very low above the ground! An especially good take because Gilchrist was moving to his left initially but then had to adjust as the ball deviated to his right, plucking it one-handed very low. India jolted by three quick strikes

Yuvraj Singh c †Gilchrist b Johnson 1 (16m 7b 0x4 0x6) SR: 14.28

Here's Robin Uthappa.

3.6

Johnson to Uthappa, no run, good length, on the stumps, hurriedly defends to cover

End of over 4 (1 run) India 12/3 (RR: 3.00)
RV Uthappa    0* (1b)      MG Johnson    2-0-5-1
SR Tendulkar    4* (11b 1x4)      B Lee    2-0-3-1

4.1

Lee to Tendulkar, 1 wide, full and wide, moves away sharply and the umpire spreads his wings

4.1

Lee to Tendulkar, no run, good length, pitching and moving away but Tendulkar gets over it and defends to point

4.2

Lee to Tendulkar, 2 runs, gentle delivery drifts down leg stump and Tendulkar turns it off the pads backward of square and calls for two immediately

4.3

Lee to Tendulkar, no run, fullish length outside off, moving away after pitching, Tendulkar leaves it

Short midwicket comes in from cover, thats Hodge

4.4

Lee to Tendulkar, no run, lovely seam position from Lee! Pitches on a great length on off stump and curls away at a good pace and height from Tendulkar, squaring him up as he turns and faces midwicket ... great delivery

4.5

Lee to Tendulkar, 1 leg bye, short delivery again, moving into Tendulkar and catching him near the midriff area well above the stumps, ball rolls away and they run a quick single

4.6

Lee to Uthappa, no run, back of a length on middle and off, Uthappa gets forward, adjusts himself, and tucks it straight to midwicket

End of over 5 (4 runs) India 16/3 (RR: 3.20)
RV Uthappa    0* (2b)      B Lee    3-0-6-1
SR Tendulkar    6* (16b 1x4)      MG Johnson    2-0-5-1

5.1

Johnson to Tendulkar, no run, full delivery angled across Tendulkar, who gets forward and defends with an inside-edge back to Johnson

5.2

Johnson to Tendulkar, no run, full again, a touch wider, Tendulkar eases forward and drives straight to mid-off

5.3

Johnson to Tendulkar, 4 leg byes, thats four, Johnson drifting down leg stump and the ball clips Tendulkar's back leg and runs away fine for leg-byes

5.4

Johnson to Tendulkar, FOUR, all timing! Tendulkar shuffles and wristily works a full delivery from off through the wide open spaces at midwicket and the ball races away across the turf

5.5

Johnson to Tendulkar, no run, good length this time on off stump, Tendulkar gets behind the line of the ball and plays it back to Johnson

5.6

Johnson to Tendulkar, no run, fuller and slower, Tendulkar eases forward and times his drive well but cant beat Symonds at extra cover

End of over 6 (8 runs) India 24/3 (RR: 4.00)
SR Tendulkar    10* (22b 2x4)      MG Johnson    3-0-9-1
RV Uthappa    0* (2b)      B Lee    3-0-6-1

6.1

Lee to Uthappa, FOUR, angled on middle and leg stump off a length and Uthappa tucks it off the pads for four down to fine leg, no fielders there so thats an easy four

6.2

Lee to Uthappa, no run, fullish outside off stump, Uthappa greets it coming forward and timing a good drive but Symonds intercepts in the covers

6.3

Lee to Uthappa, 1 run, pitches on leg stump, slower, Uthappa drops it in front of midwicket and calls Tendulkar for the quick single

6.4

Lee to Tendulkar, no run, good length, well wide of off stump, Tendulkar leaves it alone

6.5

Lee to Tendulkar, no run, good length again, outside off, not very quick and Tendulkar leaves it

6.6

Lee to Tendulkar, FOUR, sweet! Lee just overpitches a touch and with the pitch not assisting any real quick bowling Tendulkar can just lean into a textbook-perfect drive through extra cover .. all timing and the placement was perfect ... Tendulkar stands and admires the shot

End of over 7 (9 runs) India 33/3 (RR: 4.71)
SR Tendulkar    14* (25b 3x4)      B Lee    4-0-15-1
RV Uthappa    5* (5b 1x4)      MG Johnson    3-0-9-1

7.1

Johnson to Uthappa, OUT, another one bites the dust! Johnson pitches it back of a length, Uthappa gets a stride forward from his crease and plays, but misses, and the ball raps him on the pads as it angles across off stump, and even before Johnson and Gilchrist finish appealing umpire Sahiba's finger shoots up ... an iffy call, as it looked like the ball was going outside the line of impact. And the height is an issue.

RV Uthappa lbw b Johnson 5 (17m 6b 1x4 0x6) SR: 83.33

Dhoni is in early

7.2

Johnson to Dhoni, no run, and he's greeted by a short delivery on off stump, sitting up and he takes his eyes off it, luckily for him he plays it down in front of the stumps

7.3

Johnson to Dhoni, no run, short of a length outside off stump, cut into the point region off the back foot

7.4

Johnson to Dhoni, FOUR, back of a length just outside off, cramped for room but he goes for the cut, the ball stays low and Dhoni escapes with a fine-cut to fine leg

Johnson to Dhoni, no run, fuller length, Dhoni gets forward and drives on the rise, the ball again stops on him as he plays it to extra cover

7.6

Johnson to Dhoni, no run, wide of off stump, it goes past Dhoni and dies on Gilchrist again, further indication of the nature of this pitch

Not an easy surface to bat on with the ball stopping on the bat

End of over 8 (4 runs) India 37/4 (RR: 4.62)
MS Dhoni    4* (5b 1x4)      MG Johnson    4-0-13-2

8.1

Lee to Tendulkar, 1 wide, pitches full and wide and moves away, Tendulkar gets his front foot forward and then allows it to pass safely, ball again not carrying to Gilchrist

8.1

8.2

Lee to Tendulkar, no run, good length on leg stump, worked straight to midwicket

8.3

Lee to Tendulkar, no run, slower delivery, full outside off, Tendulkar gets a good stride forward and leaves and Gilchrist collects on the third bounce ... very poor carry

8.4

Lee to Tendulkar, no run, full and this time Tendulkar goes through with the push into the covers but cant beat Symonds out there

8.5

Lee to Tendulkar, FOUR, back of a length, doesnt sit up all that much and Tendulkar gets onto the back foot, punching well past point for four

8.6

9.2

Johnson to Dhoni, 1 wide, good length, angled across Dhoni well wide of off stump, he backs away and thinks about crashing it away but holds back, wisely

9.2

Johnson to Dhoni, OUT, and the captain goes! Johnson bowls it down the leg side off a short length, angling it away from the right-hander and Dhoni goes for some sort of one-handed nudge off the pads, there's touch and deviation and Gilchrist takes another good catch, this time diving full length to his left and plucking it ... are India in trouble or what?

MS Dhoni c †Gilchrist b Johnson 4 (12m 7b 1x4 0x6) SR: 57.14

Johnson to Pathan, no run, good ball, pitching on a good length and beating the outside edge of Pathan's bat as he stands and feels for it

India won the toss but combusted on a difficult pitch. Brett Lee and Mitchell Johnson bowled well to nail early wickets from which India never recovered. Sachin Tendulkar and Irfan Pathan added 49 but that stand was snapped at a crucial time. Then the last two men put on 41 to get India up to 148 but theres no hiding the fact India didnt bat out even 40 overs. Australia need 149 to ensure they cant lose the series. Stay with us for their chase shortly.
