50.1

Sharma to Ponting, 1 run, comes forward and leans into a square-drive, picking the gap

These two have rotated the strike very well today. Here's Katich.

Katich earns a living playing those kind of shots.

50.3

Sharma to Ponting, no run, short and wide, sits up and Ponting hits it to the man at cover

Ben W: "Why is it Indian supporters are so quick to search for someone to blame. Kumble has a good cricketing brain while being a great ambassador for your country and as soon as the wickets dry up (on the first day mind you)he cops a bagging. Fair go."

50.4

Sharma to Ponting, no run, good length, searching for swing, but he gets in and leaves it be

52.2

Sharma to Katich, no run, doesn't move his feet, driving at a fullish one and inside-edges it back towards Ishant, who falls over in his follow through

True Test cricket on view here. Good stuff. Meanwhile, in Dhaka, Bangladesh are 55 for 1 chasing 202 to beat New Zealand. Hope thats a good match. Back in Bangalore, Kumble returns. Lots of emails coming in regarding Kumble. I will try my best to juggle commentary and read all the emails.

    • A Kumble 15-2-37-0

54.1

Sharma to Katich, FOUR, there's four more to Katich, who gets a nice wide one and drives on the up through the covers, Zaheer runs around and dives but the bounce beats him

54.2

Sharma to Katich, no run, leaves this good-length ball outside off alone now

54.3

Sharma to Katich, no run, back of a length outside off and he pushes it towards cover

54.4

Sharma to Katich, OUT, edged and taken, against the run of play! Katich pokes at a good-length ball with minimal footwork and the resultant thick edge is easily taken by Dhoni, after which Katich kicks the ground in disgust and turns for the dressing room .. so Ishant does indeed produce a breakthrough

SM Katich c †Dhoni b Sharma 66 (230m 149b 7x4 0x6) SR: 44.29

Katich looked good for a hundred here, but has missed out - like he did in Nagpur in 2004-05, which he counts as the most disappointing moment in his career. Well bowled by Ishant, rewarded for his perseverance. In walks Michael Hussey for his first Test innings in India.

54.5

Sharma to Hussey, no run, thats a slower one outside off, left alone by Hussey

54.6

Sharma to Hussey, no run, pitches on leg and straightens, Hussey defends it back to Ishant

Ishant revived India on day three of Test here in December, against Pakistan. It was a similarly placid track then too. Will that wicket rejuvenate him to do more?

Last ball of the session coming up ...

56.6

Sharma to Hussey, no run, good length, Hussey shuffles and defends, and that will be tea

Another good session for Australia, yielding 91 runs. The dismissal of Katich a few moments ago gave India their only moment of success in the last two hours. Ponting, ominously, is batting on 94. We'll be back shortly for the final session of the day.

Kumble to Ponting, FOUR, over-pitched, Ponting takes one step down the track, is right down to the pitch of the ball, and drives it straighter off mid-off

57.5

Kumble to Ponting, 3 runs, He has done it. Slower ball, wide, and guided away towards point to reach his first century in India. While taking the third run, he starts the celebration, holding the bat up in the air, punches the air with the bat in hand. What a moment, the celebrations go for longer than usual, deservedly so

57.6

Kumble to Hussey, no run, full on pads, defended

End of over 58 (9 runs) Australia 175/2

    • MEK Hussey 1 (11b)
    • RT Ponting 102 (185b 13x4)
    • A Kumble 17-3-46-0
    • I Sharma 14-3-42-1

How satisfying is this hundred: he had 35 before this, but none in India, his Final Frontier. Leading up to the Test, Ponting had said it was his time to stand up. He has done that, and looks like he is not done yet.

58.1

Sharma to Ponting, no run, wide outside off, Ponting lunges, and leaves it alone. The ball bounces twice on the way to Dhoni

59.5

Kumble to Hussey, no run, dropped, there was a clear noise as the straighter one passed Hussey's bat. This one hit Dhoni on the thigh, far away from his gloves, and fell short of slip. To be fair to Dhoni, this was a thick edge

60.4

Khan to Hussey, no run, wider, fuller, left alone, and Dhoni fumbles with the collection

60.5

Khan to Hussey, 1 run, hiding the ball as he bowled, this one moved in a touch, Hussey just drops it down to cover, and takes a single

60.6

Khan to Ponting, no run, again hiding the ball as he runs in, looking for the away movement, but there isn't much of it. Ponting drives it straight to mid-off

69.2

Kumble to Ponting, no run, Is that a catch? Kumble is excited about what he thinks is a return catch, but the umpires don't agree. Dipping, almost a yorker, and lobs back to Kumble. Umpire Koertzen thinks it's a bump ball, and there is enough doubt.

Going back to the Kumble catch controversy in the last over. The zoomed-in replay showed it might just have been out: the ball landed before it hit the bat. It is understood that the review system is not here, but the umpires could have gone to the third umpire. Would it have been conclusive enough? Tough to say.

So that is stumps on day one in Bangalore. Zaheer dismissed Hayden in the opening over and Clarke in the last. In between those moments was an exceptional hundred from Ponting, his first in India, which has helped Australia to 254 for 4 at close. It was special all the more because of all that has been said about Ponting's poor Test record in India and his own determination to score runs on this tour. He fell, however, to his old friend Harbhajan, the ninth time in Test cricket.

Katich proved an able ally to Ponting in a 166-run partnership for the second wicket. He looked good for a hundred but fell to Ishant just before tea. Hussey, in his first Test in India, has played watchfully for his 46. Australia's day, but India have come back well towards the end. The second day is interestingly poised.

It has been a total batting track so far. Not much spin on view. Kumble and Harbhajan really toiled. Australia bat very deep, so there's plenty to come.

A good day's Test cricket. I hope you've enjoyed our coverage, Until tomorrow, on behalf of our scorer Venkat Raghav as well, this is your commentator Jamie Alter signing off. Cheers!

Good morning all, and welcome back to the opening Test at Bangalore. Its day two, and we're all about set for live action from the Chinnaswamy Stadium.

This is Jamie Alter, your commentator, saying hello. Hope you're all well.

India took two late wickets to tilt the scales somewhat. Its still a good batting track and Australia bat deep, so they will look to build their platform. Ponting's brilliant hundred has set the tone. India just took the second new ball before stumps yesterday. The action will begin in about five minutes. Get yourselves coffee, tea, sodas, popcorn, whatever, depending on your mood and time zones from which you're logging on.

Just checking the feedback inbox for your emails. Here's an early one from Grant: "Mike Hussey is set for a fantastic series. I guarantee he will make a hundred today. I just think his batting style is so well suited to Indian wickets!"

William adds: "G'day, looking forward to a great day of cricket. It will be interesting to see how Watson and White do. I get the feeling Australia picked two "half/half" players and hoped they'd fill out into full roles. I reckon they would have been better off to play Bollinger instead of Watson and use White as a backup bowler and simply utilising their best four bowlers."

Plenty of emotion coming in from Australian fans. Lets see what the morning session brings. The day is poised rather interestingly.

Shane Watson is at the crease. Four deliveries remaining in Zaheer Khan's over. Plenty of cheer from the fans. Zaheer takes his mark. 254 for 4. Shall we? Play, says umpire Koerzten. Two slips in place for Watson.

89.3

Khan to Watson, 1 run, and he gets off the mark first ball, gently nudging one from leg stump towards deep midwicket and jogging through to get the juices flowing

89.4

Khan to Hussey, 2 runs, down the pads, slanting in, and Hussey tucks it off the pads into the gap and runs hard for the second, a fresh pair of legs in Watson complimenting him well

89.5

Khan to Hussey, no run, good ball, pitches just outside off and goes on, doesn't swing

Decent crowd in, warm conditions, pitch still very good for batting. Ishant Sharma takes the ball from Zaheer. Warms up gently. He bowled well yesterday for the most part.

Here's Rahul: "I think the Australian batting line up is over hyped. White, Haddin, Lee are hardly batsman. Once India gets Hussey out, its into the semi tail. India should skittle the Aussie just after tea, I would imagine."

90.1

Sharma to Watson, no run, back of a length and Watson punches it back to Ishant

90.2

Sharma to Watson, no run, loosener, pitched up to invite the drive outside off, but the ball wobbles and stays low so Watson gets a look in and leaves it alone

90.3

Sharma to Watson, no run, and again, this one's up there but Watson leaves it alone

There hasn't been too much swing on view in this Test. Zaheer got a few deliveries to reverse.

91.3

Khan to Watson, no run, angled across again and he shoulders arms once more

Matt strikes back: "Have a look at the first class averages of Watson, Haddin and White. all in excess of 40 over an extended period of time. They can all bat." Actually plenty of emails flooding in in response to Rahul's comment. Can't put them all up, else we'd have a war here.

91.4

Khan to Watson, no run, identical delivery, Zaheer working Watson up with the across-going delivery and he shoulders arms ... is the inswinger coming up now?

91.5

Khan to Watson, 1 run, nope, not yet, as this one pitches full on off stump and Watson defends with a thick outside edge along the ground towards gully

Sharma to Watson, no run, lots of swing, and a loud, loud appeal! Pitches on a length and jags back a lot, thudding into Watson's flap above the knee roll, thats a confident appeal but the bounce and amount of swing leaves enough doubt in Asad Rauf's mind, and replays indicate it was doing too much and carrying on over the stumps ... still, a very, very close appeal

92.2

Sharma to Watson, no run, gentle seam there, wobbling away after pitching wide of the stumps

92.3

Sharma to Watson, OUT, but he's gone now! Ishant strikes early into the day, pitching it on a good length, on the upright seam, getting the ball to come back in and a feeble Watson half-heartedly pokes at it and the ball nips back past the edge to clip off stump

SR Watson b Sharma 2 (15m 14b 0x4 0x6) SR: 14.28

So Watson's first Test innings in three years ends in failure. His bat came down too late against that gem from Ishant, which just kissed the off stump. A good over from Ishant. Australia in a spot of bother. All eyes on Hussey. Ishant celebrates with his team-mates. Early success for India in ideal batting conditions. In comes Haddin.

92.4

Sharma to Haddin, no run, swing but its too full down the leg side and he clips to leg
