52.4

Lee to Dhoni, no run, good length on off stump and he pushes it to cover

52.5

Lee to Dhoni, no run, short delivery, 129.3ks, directed to the body and swinging in massively after pitching, Dhoni arches his back and allows it to pass over the stumps

52.6

Lee to Dhoni, 1 bye, movement there, pitching short and deviating away from outside off stump, Dhoni has a poke at it and misses, and Haddin cannot collect either, so byes

And back to Sidharth Monga for more commentary.

53.4

Clarke to Ganguly, no run, fuller, and played straight back to the bowler

Lee to Dhoni, no run, bowled from wide of the crease, sharp movement in, but Dhoni has it covered, and plays it towards mid-on

54.6

Lee to Dhoni, no run, nice, gets this one to hold its line, from the same spot, and Dhoni sees it coming and doesn't play at it

End of over 55 (maiden) India 160/5
MS Dhoni    2* (21b)      B Lee    14-5-28-1
SC Ganguly    13* (54b 1x4)      MJ Clarke    1-0-1-0

Time for a mid-afternoon drink at the Chinnaswamy
Neil Dutta, from the US of A: "Someone mentioned Ganguly having scored much lower than Dravid over the years...well here is a case in point... he's been stranded so many times without any support on the other end that he's had no choice but to go for it. On the other hand when the top order fired, under favorable batting conditions, by the time Ganguly came out to bat it would be declaration time."

55.1

Clarke to Ganguly, 4 byes, extra bounce for Clarke, bowled flatter, hit a crack, and exploded. Haddin has no chance

55.2

Clarke to Ganguly, no run, full, almost yorker, and defended

55.3

Clarke to Ganguly, FOUR, top shot, steps down, right to pitch of the ball, and flat-batted straight. Mid-off has no chance

55.4

55.5

Clarke to Dhoni, no run, full, on the off stump, and defended with a big stride in

56.1

Lee to Dhoni, no run, bouncer from wide of the crease, but angled down too much, and Dhoni ducks out of the way easily

56.2

Lee to Dhoni, 1 run, that's high into the ribs, Dhoni is on his toes, and turns it down to fine leg

smiles exchanged, and surely a few words, as Dhoni passes Lee on the way of the single. Lee goes round the stump to Ganguly

56.3

Lee to Ganguly, 1 run, short of a length, outside off, Ganguly drops and runs, Hussey is sharp, but Ganguly is in the way of the throw. Smart running

56.4

Lee to Dhoni, 1 leg bye, slower ball, but misdirected again, down the pads, deceives Dhoni, but still concedes a leg-bye

56.5

Lee to Ganguly, 1 run, well played Ganguly, this was dug in short, was quick, and stayed low, and was headed for the off stump. Ganguly gets his bat down in time, what's more he drops and runs a sharp single

56.6

Lee to Dhoni, no run, a very short bouncer, it's well directed but ends up a bit oo high, Dhoni sways out of the way and sees it into Haddin's gloves

End of over 57 (4 runs) India 174/5
MS Dhoni    4* (27b)      B Lee    15-5-31-1

SC Ganguly    21* (62b 2x4)      B Lee    15-5-31-1

Arun: "don't buy Neil's comments on Ganguly scoring less than Dravid just because he came in late. VVS used to come after Ganguly when he was the captain - generally No 5. I can turn that logic around and say that because he batted more often with the tail or India declared halfway through his innings, he should've had a better average than 41 because of all the not-outs. Ganguly is a decent test batsman (outstanding ODI batsman), but is no Dravid. Twist stats any way you like... facts are facts..."

Feroz Dawson: "Can't you guys let Ganguly retire in peace? He was dropped by Chappell, then when he returned he played very well, he was captain of India when India finally grew a spine, all this talk about Dravid and Ganguly is unnecessary and redundant. So, this has been Australia's session again, in that they got rid of Rahul Dravid, who was looking good. Dhoni was taken too, and only 77 runs given away. Ganguly, though, is playing a resolute innings, but is running short of partners. India still need 21 to avoid the follow-on. Join is in 15.

Ram, meanwhile, say: "If you look at the way Ganguly is playing with the tail ( I reckon Bhajji would be included there), it is quite clear why our top-order batsmen can never stretch an innings. Singles off the first ball of the over is hardly the way to play. A more common sense approach is required - and a bit of protection - one has only to look at the way Michael Hussey plays, or the way Inzi used to, to understand what good cricket is about."

And this is Sushant's side of story: "Remember the last time sachin did this with bhajji?? he ended up scoring 69 or thereabouts.......bhajji is known to bat a bit too....."

End of over 71 (3 runs) India 210/6
Harbhajan Singh    12* (21b 2x4)      CL White    7-1-26-0
SC Ganguly    38* (99b 3x4)      MJ Clarke    9-2-22-1

Welcome back for the final session of the third day. The biggest question is: should Ganguly farm the strike or should he trust Harbhajan? Well, there are two philosophies to this, both have worked in the past. We'll leave it to Ganguly to decide

Harbhajan Singh    17* (31b 2x4)      MJ Clarke    11-2-29-1
SC Ganguly    43* (107b 3x4)      CL White    8-1-29-0

Don't know if it's just me, but there is a sense of "meandering along" in the game with the spinners on. The fields are not overtly aggressive, even for Harbhajan, and singles are avaialble easily

74.1

White to Ganguly, no run, pushed through, and played with an open face

74.2

White to Ganguly, no run, big optimistic shout by Haddin, more out of having collected this way outside leg than conviction of an edge

74.3

White to Ganguly, no run, pushed through again, and defended in front of pad

74.4

White to Ganguly, 1 run, flighted on the pads, and played away nicely to wide of the three-quarter mid-on

74.5

White to Harbhajan Singh, no run, toppie, going down the leg, and a needless shout for a bat-pad ensues too

74.6

White to Harbhajan Singh, 1 run, wide and short, and Harbhajan cuts it away with ease

End of over 75 (2 runs) India 223/6
Harbhajan Singh    18* (33b 2x4)      CL White    9-1-31-0
SC Ganguly    44* (111b 3x4)      MJ Clarke    11-2-29-1

Pace is back, in Mitchell Johnson. New ball is due in five overs. They would want to see if, and how much, reverse-swing is happening.

Two slips and a gully for Harbhajan, coming round the wicket, is Johnson

75.1

Johnson to Harbhajan Singh, 2 runs, short, and Harbhajan walks into the loosener and pulls it away, square of the backward square leg

75.2

Johnson to Harbhajan Singh, no run, wide of the off stump, and left alone

75.3

Johnson to Harbhajan Singh, no run, wide again, straightening too, and Harbhajan has nothing to do with it

75.4

Johnson to Harbhajan Singh, no run, wide again, Johnson not getting his radar right

Steve: "Good captaincy by Ponting, he is trying to catch up on a few overs. Australia dont like enforcing the follow on anyway and we dont want our openers out there tonight. So many reasons why this team makes the Indian team look like a school boy team."

75.5

Johnson to Harbhajan Singh, no run, wide still, but it's closer to off stump and Harbhajan is made to play at it because of the angle from round the stumps

75.6

Johnson to Harbhajan Singh, no run, this one is wide down the leg side, Harbhajan goes for the pull, but it's too wide for him

End of over 76 (2 runs) India 225/6
Harbhajan Singh    20* (39b 2x4)      MG Johnson    14-3-44-3
SC Ganguly    44* (111b 3x4)      CL White    9-1-31-0

76.1

White to Ganguly, 1 run, short and wide, and cut away with ease

76.2

White to Harbhajan Singh, no run, full, straight, and hit back to the bowler

76.3

White to Harbhajan Singh, no run, full, and patted back down the pitch

76.4

White to Harbhajan Singh, 2 runs, wide down the leg side again by White, and Harbhajan goes for the paddle again

76.5

White to Harbhajan Singh, 1 run, wide, short, cut away, Harbhajan is batting sensibly, and he is also getting fed loose balls

76.6

White to Ganguly, 2 runs, wide, short, Ganguly waits a fraction more, and cuts it squarer that he has been doing, and the placement earns him an extra run

End of over 77 (6 runs) India 231/6
SC Ganguly    47* (113b 3x4)      CL White    10-1-37-0
Harbhajan Singh    23* (43b 2x4)      MG Johnson    14-3-44-3

77.1

Johnson to Harbhajan Singh, 1 run, angled across Harbhajan, on a length, and played into the covers easily

Ganguly three short of a fifty, and on strike

77.2

Johnson to Ganguly, no run, on the off stump, on a length, and Ganguly looks to steer it away, but can't get it finer of point

Ganguly has some trouble in the eye, perhaps something to do with the contact lenses he wears on the field

Meanwhile, I completely forgot, the follow-on has been averted. Not that Australia would have been particularly interested in enforcing it

77.3

Johnson to Ganguly, OUT, and he's given him! Johnson gets Ganguly with one that pitches outside off stump and comes back in to rap the front flap, it looks to be marginally outside and Asad Rauf has a thought before adjudging it out ... the break in play has done Ganguly in

SC Ganguly lbw b Johnson 47 (193m 115b 3x4 0x6) SR: 40.86

Replays indicate it may have struck Ganguly fractionally outside the line. It would have gone on to hit the stumps. Zaheer Khan comes in. Still no sign of Kumble. Johnson goes back to his mark.

77.4

Johnson to Khan, no run, fullish ball, Zaheer comes on the front foot and defends it

77.5

Johnson to Khan, no run, beaten by a full one that stays low outside off stump

Johnson moves around the stumps

77.6

Johnson to Khan, 1 leg bye, beats him with one thats slides down and raps his pads, but leg stump was visible when Zaheer got stuck in his crease, and it was high too

Good over from Johnson, getting his fourth wicket.

End of over 78 (2 runs) India 233/7
Z Khan    0* (3b)      MG Johnson    15-3-45-4
Harbhajan Singh    24* (44b 2x4)      CL White    10-1-37-0

78.1

78.2

White to Khan, no run, slowly tossed up wide outside off, stays low, cuts and misses

78.4

White to Khan, no run, flat and short, he gets tall and defends it down safely

78.5

White to Khan, no run, tossed up on leg stump, Zaheer thrusts forward and defends, no bat on that one but the ball balloons up to Katich at short leg, who appeals

78.6

End of over 79 (maiden) India 233/7

79.1

Johnson to Harbhajan Singh, no run, good length outside off stump, he gets forward and defends

79.2

Johnson to Harbhajan Singh, 1 leg bye, short down leg stump, Harbhajan pulls meekly and the ball balloons up off his gloves to short fine leg, where there is no one, and Haddin runs after it

79.3

Johnson to Khan, no run, fuller length, zoning into the stumps, jammed to point

Here comes the rain ...

79.4

Johnson to Khan, no run, beaten this time on a flirt outside off stump, the ball straightens and skims past the outside edge of Zaheer's bat

Rauf and Koerzten have a chat as a shower starts. The ground staff are ready.

79.5

Johnson to Khan, no run, zips past the bat again, good stuff from Johnson here

79.6

Johnson to Khan, no run, short of a length on off stump and he defends it

Going back to the Haddin-Zaheer camaraderie, it was a pretty heated exchange before the rain. Haddin had something to say to Zaheer, just after he had defended a delivery. It got Zaheer a bit wild, but Haddin had had his say by then and Hussey had pulled him away by then. While going away during the rain, Ponting was also seen chatting with Zaheer, possibly trying to pacify him, but Zaheer didn't look impresses

3:35pm local Good news there, it has stopped raining and the covers are coming off. It was, hopefully, just a passing shower. We should have play pretty soon

3:13pm local Zaheer is having an animated discussion with Haddin. He stands and watches Haddin walk away, mouthing off something. Haddin claps his gloves and doesn't respond. Haven't a clue what it could be about. I'm more worried about the rain. And the players go off. The covers come on.

80.3

80.4

White to Khan, no run, down the leg side again, White may have been tidy when it comes to figures, but he hasn't played the batsmen play enough

80.5

silly point in, to go with the forward short leg and slip

81.6

Johnson to Harbhajan Singh, no run, short, on the stumps, Harbhajan goes for the short-arm pull, but can't find the gap in the on-side field
