Border-Gavaskar Trophy - 1st Test

India v Australia

Match drawn

Overs 1-50  | Overs 51-100  | Overs 101-150

100.1

Clarke to Khan, 1 run, nice, inviting fulltoss, and Zaheer plays it to sweeper cover

100.2

Clarke to Kumble, no run, angling down the pads, no spin, and easily padded away

100.3

Clarke to Kumble, no run, this one was straighter, Kumble got a big stride to pad it off

100.4

Clarke to Kumble, no run, into the pads again, and defends it without trouble

100.5

Clarke to Kumble, no run, quicker this time, but going down the legs again

100.6

Clarke to Kumble, no run, better line, just outside off, and played with an open face

This has been quite an eventful day's play, one that belonged to Australia but for the final session when Harbhajan and Zaheer got stuck into them like thorns. It was a healthy 80-run partnership, after Australia had got all the main Indian batsmen back fairly cheaply.

Mitchell Johnson had a fruitful day, taking four wickets. Despite Harbhajan and Zaheer, Australia go into the fourth day with the advantage, still leading by 117 runs. Don't forget India will have to bat last, too. Do join us tomorrow, for what should be an exciting fourth day. The play WILL NOT start early tomorrow, despite the rain interruption in the final session.

Bad light comes in, and Zaheer and Kumble are quick to accept it. That should be stumps, and also an end to a frustrating session for Australia.

End of over 101 (1 run) India 313/8
A Kumble    0* (8b)      MJ Clarke    15-2-35-1
Z Khan    35* (68b 5x4)      SR Watson    15-3-37-2

Hello everyone, Jamie Alter here to start off the commentary before Sidharth Monga takes over for the day. We're about ten minutes from the start.

The players are taking the field. Anil Kumble and Zaheer Khan are the not out batsmen. Lovely weather this morning in Bangalore. Good crowd in today. Zaheer to face the first ball of the day, batting on 35. Kumble yet to get off the mark. Brett Lee has the ball. India 313 for 8, behind by 117. Just one slip in place.

101.1

Lee to Khan, no run, very good shout for lbw first ball! Lee starts off full and fast, yorker into Zaheer's pads, going down leg stump but a very strong appeal from the bowler, ball thuds into Zaheer's toes and runs down to fine leg, there's confusion between the batsmen but Zaheer scrambles back inside in time

101.2

Lee to Khan, no run, beaten this time, full and staying low, he drives and misses

101.3

Lee to Khan, FOUR, handy runs, courtesy a thick outside edge, a soft-handed dab at one outside off stump and with just one slip the ball runs away quickly and beats a diving fielder down on the ropes, Zaheer continues to prosper

101.4

Lee to Khan, no run, drives at a wide one and misses, more awkward bounce on view

101.5

Lee to Khan, 1 leg bye, slides down the pads, plenty of swing, smartly tucked off the pads towards square leg and they call for the single

Now a second slip comes in

101.6

Lee to Kumble, no run, drives at a full one and gets an inside-edge onto his pads

End of over 102 (5 runs) India 318/8
A Kumble    0* (9b)      B Lee    22-5-53-1
Z Khan    39* (73b 6x4)      MJ Clarke    15-2-35-1

Mitchell Johnson has the ball. He spoke this morning before play of how desperate he is to get a five-wicket haul.

102.1

Johnson to Khan, 1 run, full ball outside off and thats steered down to Clark at third man, Zaheer wants two but Kumble says no

102.2

Johnson to Kumble, no run, back of a length and he gets onto the toes, driving to point

102.3

Johnson to Kumble, no run, full ball and Kumble gets down and drives hard at that one, that looks very proper like for the cameras, footwork in place and all, except there's one problem - he's missed the ball

102.4

Johnson to Kumble, no run, outside the off stump and he leaves this one alone

102.5

Johnson to Kumble, no run, on the stumps and defended to towards midwicket

102.6

Johnson to Kumble, no run, marginally over pitched, Kumble square-drives to point

End of over 103 (1 run) India 319/8
A Kumble    0* (14b)      MG Johnson    21-4-63-4
Z Khan    40* (74b 6x4)      B Lee    22-5-53-1

103.1

Lee to Khan, no run, beaten again, Lee pitching full outside off stump and somehow missing the bat after Zaheer goes fishing wildly

103.2

Lee to Khan, no run, better, much like he played yesterday, using his feet to get to the pitch and presenting a straight bat to play the ball toward cover

103.3

Lee to Khan, no run, and again some positive footwork from Zaheer, meeting the full ball with a textbook drive to the man at cover

103.4

Lee to Khan, no run, full again, a tad slower, and driven well to cover again

103.5

Lee to Khan, FOUR, now he connects perfectly with what he's been practicing the last three balls, Lee again overpitches, slightly wider, and Zaheer square-drives superbly into the gap

103.6

Lee to Khan, no run, another classy front-foot square-drive but straight to Hussey

End of over 104 (4 runs) India 323/8
Z Khan    44* (80b 7x4)      B Lee    23-5-57-1
A Kumble    0* (14b)      MG Johnson    21-4-63-4

104.1

Johnson to Kumble, no run, pitches outside leg and raps the pad, no appeal

104.2

Johnson to Kumble, no run, wide outside off stump, staying very low, Kumble goes to cut and cannot make contact, beaten by the wobbling ball

104.3

Johnson to Kumble, no run, full and wide, Kumble drives hard and gets an under edge that skids through low to Haddin on the bounce, who pulls off a very good stop behind the stumps

104.4

Johnson to Kumble, 1 run, good shot, getting tall to ride the bounce and play it off the back foot into the gap at square leg for a single to get off the mark

104.5

Johnson to Khan, no run, good length ball seams away and he leaves it be off the front foot, tucking the bat behind his pads as the ball dart off the pitch

104.6

Johnson to Khan, no run, slower ball beats him outside off stump, low bounce too

Over to Sidharth Monga

End of over 105 (1 run) India 324/8
Z Khan    44* (82b 7x4)      MG Johnson    22-4-64-4
A Kumble    1* (18b)      B Lee    23-5-57-1

105.1

Lee to Kumble, no run, on the stumps, fullish delivery, and played with an angled band towards short midwicket

105.2

Lee to Kumble, no run, dug in short, but doesn't get great bounce, played in front of his waist by Kumble, who is on his toes

105.3

Lee to Kumble, no run, fuller, trying to draw Kumble into a drive outside off, but Kumble resists

105.4

Lee to Kumble, 1 run, full, almost overpitched, just outside off, and hit away towards sweeper cover

105.5

Lee to Khan, no run, just short of a length, wide outside off stump, Zaheer doesn't flirt with it

105.6

Lee to Khan, no run, closer to off stump this time, on a length, forcing Zaheer to play at it, getting it to straighten just a touch, and beats Zaheer

End of over 106 (1 run) India 325/8
Z Khan    44* (84b 7x4)      B Lee    24-5-58-1
A Kumble    2* (22b)      MG Johnson    22-4-64-4

106.1

Johnson to Kumble, no run, wide, angling away too, Kumble looks for a square drive, but misses again

106.2

Johnson to Kumble, 1 run, fuller, closer to off stump, driven away with an open face towards thirdman

106.3

Johnson to Khan, no run, lovely bowling, accurate, starting just around off stump, on a length, and moving away slightly to beat the poking bat

106.4

Johnson to Khan, no run, missed out on a single there, this was a length ball on the pads, but Zaheer got his front pad across too much

106.5

Johnson to Khan, no run, draws him into the drive again, fuller, a touch wider, and then beating Zaheer's bat

round the wicket now

106.6

Johnson to Khan, 1 leg bye, the ball is angled in, but sharply, and beats the bat, but there is an easy leg-bye to be taken

End of over 107 (2 runs) India 327/8
Z Khan    44* (88b 7x4)      MG Johnson    23-4-65-4
A Kumble    3* (24b)      B Lee    24-5-58-1

Interestingly, Sourav Ganguly and Virender Sehwag are sitting next to each other, in the same place as they sat towards the end of yesterday. Any superstition there?

107.1

Lee to Khan, no run, slower ball, just outside the off stump, and beats Zaheer again

107.2

Lee to Khan, no run, on a length, outside off, Zaheer looks to play at it, but withdraws at the very last moment

Zaheer has been fidgety outside off stump this morning, and has earned himself an extra slip now, the second slip, in Ricky Ponting

107.3

Lee to Khan, no run, just outside the off, leaving the batsman, and played and missed again

107.4

Lee to Khan, no run, this was fuller, and closer to off stump, Zaheer could get his foot closer to the line, and played with the middle of the bat, into the covers

107.5

Lee to Khan, no run, there you go, thrown a bit wider, and Zaheer goes for a slog, foot nowhere near, and luckily for him, misses it completely

107.6

Lee to Khan, no run, that's better, closer to off, length ball, and a middle-of-the-bat defence

End of over 108 (maiden) India 327/8
Z Khan    44* (94b 7x4)      B Lee    25-6-58-1
A Kumble    3* (24b)      MG Johnson    23-4-65-4

108.1

Johnson to Kumble, 1 leg bye, just short of length, into Kumble's hip, and an easy run

round the wicket to Zaheer

108.2

Johnson to Khan, no run, angling in again, and played straight back to bowler

108.3

Johnson to Khan, 1 run, full, wide, and driven away to sweeper cover

over the wicket to Kumble

108.4

Johnson to Kumble, no run, angling away, and frustratingly for Australia, played and missed again

108.5

Johnson to Kumble, no run, widish, fullish, Kumble goes for drive again, and plays over it

108.6

Johnson to Kumble, no run, straighter, length ball, and Kumble defends it solidly

End of over 109 (2 runs) India 329/8
A Kumble    3* (28b)      MG Johnson    24-4-66-4
Z Khan    45* (96b 7x4)      B Lee    25-6-58-1

This has been a frustrating morning for Australia: both the batsmen have played and missed frequently, but not edged

109.1

Lee to Khan, no run, short outside off stump, and left alone comfortably

109.2

Lee to Khan, 2 runs, steps out, Lee bowls a slower one, Zaheer adjusts too, and flicks it towards backward square leg

with that couple, the lead comes down to two figures

109.3

Lee to Khan, no run, fuller, faster, and Zaheer plays it with an open face; off the outside half of the bat it goes towards Ponting at second slip, but all along the ground

109.4

Lee to Khan, 1 run, big appeal, full, inswinging yorker, but missing the leg easily

109.5

Lee to Kumble, 4 leg byes, another inswinging yorker, even further down the legs, Kumble gets a part of pad to it on the way

109.6

Lee to Kumble, (no ball) 1 run, length ball, just outside off, and Kumble launches into a square-drive, but there is protection in the deep

109.6

Lee to Khan, 1 run, more frustration for Lee, just outside off, holding its line, takes Zaheer's edge, but it's played with soft hands, and goes all along the ground between second slip and gully

End of over 110 (10 runs) India 339/8
Z Khan    49* (101b 7x4)      B Lee    26-6-64-1
A Kumble    4* (30b)      MG Johnson    24-4-66-4

110.1

Johnson to Khan, no run, that one got a bit big on Zaheer, angling into his chest, but played down well, and Zaheer is anxious for a quick run, his 50th, but Kumble sends him back

110.2

Johnson to Khan, no run, fuller, outside off, and holding its line, Zaheer hangs his bat out, and misses it by a fair bit

110.3

Johnson to Khan, no run, on the stumps, length ball, angling in, and defended with an open face towards the point region

110.4

Johnson to Khan, no run, another wide delivery, another poke, another miss. Story of the morning

110.5

Johnson to Khan, 2 runs, that's it, Zak gets to a fifty, angling into the pads, and turned away towards backward square leg. What a reception, the whole dressing room stands up and applaud, Kumble gives him a hug. What rescue job, only his second Test half-century, his highest score, 75, against Bangladesh

110.6

Johnson to Khan, no run, wide, getting wider, and left alone

End of over 111 (2 runs) India 341/8
Z Khan    51* (107b 7x4)      MG Johnson    25-4-68-4
A Kumble    4* (30b)      B Lee    26-6-64-1

Watson replaces Lee

111.1

Watson to Kumble, 1 run, and a n edge straight away, pitched on the off, holding its line, Kumble plays at it, and expertly edges between slip and gully

111.2

Watson to Khan, no run, slower ball, 111.9ks, but too full, and played back easily

111.3

Watson to Khan, no run, some inwards movement, seaming from a length, but going down the pads, and won't trouble Zaheer

111.4

Watson to Khan, 1 run, and again, getting the movement from a length, but too much into pads, and Zaheer takes an easy single to backward square leg

111.5

Watson to Kumble, no run, sharp movement, from off-stump line, and rapping Kumble on the pads, but going down clearly, hence just a subdued appeal

111.6

Watson to Kumble, OUT, finally Aussies break through, there's late swing, fuller than just good length, and swinging in late, Kumble is caught on the crease. Rauf has no doubt about this one, the only doubt could have been about the inside edge, but it hit the pad first and the bat second

A Kumble lbw b Watson 5 (57m 33b 0x4 0x6) SR: 15.15

End of over 112 (2 runs) India 343/9
     SR Watson    16-3-39-3
Z Khan    52* (110b 7x4)      MG Johnson    25-4-68-4

Another useful partnership comes to end, one that added 31 and frustrated Australia for 12.3 overs

112.1

Johnson to Khan, 1 leg bye, angled in, hitting Zaheer on the pad, and running down towards square leg, Zaheer is not looking to farm the strike there, as he initiates the single

112.2

Johnson to Sharma, no run, starts wide of off stump, just fuller than good length, this one keeps low, beats Ishant, and bounces well in front of Haddin who collects it eventually in front of his chest

112.3

Johnson to Sharma, no run, same length, but this time the bounce is true, and Ishant withdraws from the shot

112.4

Johnson to Sharma, no run, fuller, but wastes one more delivery by bowling it well wide

goes over the wicket now

112.5

Johnson to Sharma, no run, but still bowling wide of off stump, and Ishant lets it go

112.6

Johnson to Sharma, 1 run, on the stumps, the first time Johnson has made Ishant play, and he does it pretty well, turning it to wide of square leg, and taking a single. Zaheer clearly trusts his No. 11, as he has taken a single off the last ball

End of over 113 (2 runs) India 345/9
I Sharma    1* (5b)      MG Johnson    26-4-69-4
Z Khan    52* (111b 7x4)      SR Watson    16-3-39-3

113.1

Watson to Sharma, no run, pitches outside off, on a length, and seams in, beats the bat, and passes very close to the off stump

113.2

Watson to Sharma, no run, there's the late inswinger, on target, but Ishant does well to keep it out, plays it to Ponting at midwicket, who knocks out the stumps at non-striker's end, and has an exchange with Zaheer that looked amusing

113.3

Watson to Sharma, no run, swinging in, but going down the leg side, and Ishant doesn't have to do much

113.4

Watson to Sharma, no run, dug in this time, rises up chest-high for a normal batsman, but Ishant is tall and keeps it down easily

113.5

Watson to Sharma, FOUR, expertly edged again, Aussies will be frustrated, full, holding its line this time, as opposed to the inwards movement, gets an edge, that goes between Haddin and Hayden, what's more all along the ground. Idea shot!

113.6

Watson to Sharma, no run, full, straight, on the stumps, played back to Watson

End of over 114 (4 runs) India 349/9
I Sharma    5* (11b 1x4)      SR Watson    17-3-43-3
Z Khan    52* (111b 7x4)      MG Johnson    26-4-69-4

that's the first drinks break on the fourth day of the Test

114.1

Johnson to Khan, 1 run, another quick single off the first ball of the over, angled into the pads and turned away to midwicket

114.2

Johnson to Sharma, no run, another wasted delivery, short, and way down the leg side

114.3

Johnson to Sharma, no run, waste of effort again, wide, short, rising, but the only player troubled is Haddin because of the extra bounce; Ishant doesn't even bother to play

114.4

Johnson to Sharma, no run, wide again, left alone, ordinary bowling, that said, he might bowl one on target and get his man next ball

114.5

Johnson to Sharma, 1 leg bye, angled into the hip, and looks to play into the leg side, but misses and gets a single off the pad

114.6

Johnson to Khan, no run, Zaheer steps down, length ball, and played back to the bowler

End of over 115 (2 runs) India 351/9
Z Khan    53* (113b 7x4)      MG Johnson    27-4-70-4
I Sharma    5* (15b 1x4)      SR Watson    17-3-43-3

115.1

Watson to Sharma, 4 leg byes, nice bouncer, gets into Ishant's face, but Ishant still manages to get his helmet onto it, and get four leg-byes. That's 50 extras in the innings

115.2

Watson to Sharma, no run, another bouncer, but ill directed, and Ishant ducks easily

115.3

Watson to Sharma, no run, that was the ball, full, swinging in, but Ishant is down in time, and plays it towards mid-on

115.4

Watson to Sharma, no run, another accurate delivery, length ball, seaming in towards off stump, and kept out by Ishant

115.5

Watson to Sharma, no run, short, into the ribs, Ishant does well to keep it out. But where is the short leg?

115.6

Watson to Sharma, no run, wide, left alone, bounces well in front of Haddin who haddin't a chance of collecting it cleanly. But the batsmen choose not to run off the misfield

End of over 116 (4 runs, maiden) India 355/9
I Sharma    5* (21b 1x4)      SR Watson    18-4-43-3
Z Khan    53* (113b 7x4)      MG Johnson    27-4-70-4

Michael Clarke replacing Johnson, Stuart Clark not to be seen

116.1

Clarke to Khan, no run, flat, on the stumps, Zaheer has a big stride down, and defends in front of his pad

Alex: "Why haven't they bowled katich? I remember a few years ago against Zimbabwe he had a big haul with his spin."

116.2

Clarke to Khan, no run, angling down the pads again, Zaheer gets a big front foot down, and pads it away

116.3

Clarke to Khan, 2 runs, angling down the leg again, and Zaheer gets his front foot across, and sweepes it to fine of fine leg

116.4

Clarke to Khan, no run, full, on the off, defended

116.5

Clarke to Khan, 1 run, straying on to the leg again, and helped away for another single

a slip, a silly point, a forward short leg for Ishant

116.6

Clarke to Sharma, no run, angled down the leg side again, and Ishant has not trouble keeping it out

End of over 117 (3 runs) India 358/9
I Sharma    5* (22b 1x4)      MJ Clarke    16-2-38-1
Z Khan    56* (118b 7x4)      SR Watson    18-4-43-3

What a Test Zaheer is having. The best bowling figures for India, the highest score for India. Interesting contest going on, though, with extras for being the top-scorer, 56 v 52 as of now

117.1

Watson to Khan, no run, full on the stumps, and solid defence, just to rub some more salt

117.2

Watson to Khan, 1 run, short, outside off, and steered away to thirdman

117.3

Watson to Sharma, no run, on the target again, keeping low a bit, Ishant bends down low, and plays it straight back, Watson is testing the batsmen consistently

117.4

Watson to Sharma, no run, wide for a change, and Ishant lets that one go, and it bounces well in front of Haddin who does well again

117.5

Watson to Sharma, 1 run, good line again, just short of length around off stump, holding its line, taking the edge, and as usual going all along the ground to thirdman

117.6

Watson to Khan, no run, length delivery, outside off, and played straight back

End of over 118 (2 runs) India 360/9
Z Khan    57* (121b 7x4)      SR Watson    19-4-45-3
I Sharma    6* (25b 1x4)      MJ Clarke    16-2-38-1

118.1

Clarke to Sharma, no run, full, but angling down the leg side, played one bounce to the short leg

118.2

Clarke to Sharma, no run, full, outside off, Ishant hits it towards point

118.3

Clarke to Sharma, no run, full, straight, front foot is down, and played back to the bowler

118.4

Clarke to Sharma, no run, that one ripped, spinning of a length, but it's too good for Ishant to edge

118.5

Clarke to Sharma, no run, fired into the pads again, and kept out by Ishant

118.6

Clarke to Sharma, OUT, Clarke does it again! throws it up this time, Ishant goes for the drive, it pitches in front of off, and doesn't spin, and Ishant plays outside the line, and it's all over

I Sharma b Clarke 6 (33m 31b 1x4 0x6) SR: 19.35

So what a comeback it has been by the Indian tail. Who would have thought after Ganguly's dismissal, just after tea yesterday, that India would still be batting half an hour before lunch today? Harbhajan and Zaheer (the top-scorer) have put in a big effort to keep India alive. We'll see in a bit how well the Aussies reply. And whether, and when, they go for a charge for a declaration - they lead by 70 as of now. Or is it India who will continue coming back into the match?
