That's stumps on day 1. Well a fabulous day for milestones. Sachin Tendulkar is the highest run-scorer in Tests, he crosses 12,000 runs and his 50th fifty in the process, Sourav Ganguly crosses 7000 runs, and last but certainly the least significant of the day, Ishant Sharma has 100 Test runs! I must thank Prashant and Mandar, two of our readers, for bringing that up.

Well the fall of Tendulkar's wicket went against the run of play and the Australians will sleep quite well tonight I guess. It was a treat watching Tendulkar attain the record, and he wasn't finished after crossing the required 15 runs to beat Lara. His timing and placement was exquisite.

Here's what he had to say," When I got out in Bangalore a few guys made it a point to remind me about the record. I knew I had done a good job there and that was important. My focus today was just to watch the ball. The journey over the last 19 yrs has been fantastic. There are stones thrown at you and you turn it in to milestones. I was not that excited to be honest. The focus was to continue and not lose concentration. Me and Sourav focussed on batting out the day. I didn't really think of the record too many times. I try to keep the records out of my mind and my aim is mainly to contribute. It's nice that it's come at the right time, the Australians are a quality opposition. I planned to stay till the end but it didn't happen. I thought i didn't use my feet well but that's the beauty of the game. The ball changes and so does the game."

India will feel fairly satisfied with the day's play. Ganguly's going strong at one end Australia will target him first thing in the morning. Do join us tomorrow at 9.30 (4.00 GMT) for the second day. Thanks for the mails. This is Kanishkaa signing off. Cheers!

9.15: The weather this morning is just as good as yesterday's so that's good news. It's bright and sunny as the players go through their warm-up drills.

Had Tendulkar batted out till the end, the day's honours would have belonged to India. The first hour won't be easy as the new ball is just five overs old and there's a nightwatchman in as well. The Australian fast bowlers bowled well within their limits yesterday in the last two sessions and managed to keep a couple of batsmen quiet. This looks like a 500 wicket but it's not guaranteed yet for India. Dhoni doesn't have a fabulous Test record as a batsman - true story - but if he can reverse that today, then India will definitely get close to that mark.

Aditya writes in from the USA: "Here's wishing good luck to Ganguly in his last series...and fair play to him for having the good grace to retire so he can leave room for a youngster to take his place.... I think an apt song for him at this time would be "Nothing Else Matters" by Metallica: "Never opened myself this way, life is ours, we live it our way..."

Interesting choice of song, Aditya.

9.00 am Good morning everybody and welcome to the second day's play of the second Test in Mohali. This is Kanishkaa Balachandran returning to take you through today. Jamie Alter has the bulletin honours for the rest of this game so it's a very good morning to him and Raju, our scorer.

Just to recap, yesterday was a day of milestones - Tendulkar went past Lara to become the highest Test run-getter, he also went past 12,000 runs, Ganguly crossed 7000, Ishant Sharma touched 100 Test runs and Matthew Hayden took his 41st catch at first slip, the most by any fielder diving to his left in that position.

Okay, I made that last one up.

85.2

You have to admire Lee for trying to make things happen

Dhoni's cameo so far has taken a lot of pressure of Ganguly. He's looked to attack, it's important India get a good stand going with their last recognised pair. Ganguly has done well to keep his wicket intact but hasn't looked at ease with the short ball.
