ML Hayden    10* (23b 2x4)      Z Khan    4-2-9-0

A steady, if unspectacular, start from Australia. Both openers looking solid. Here comes Kumble. A forward short leg, slip and silly point look on. In the background Rehanna plays. Or at least what I thought was Rehanna.

Kumble to Katich, no run, skips down and collects on the full, clipping to midwicket

End of over 9 (4 runs) Australia 22/0
SM Katich    10* (30b 2x4)      A Kumble    1-0-4-0
ML Hayden    11* (25b 2x4)      I Sharma    4-1-9-0

Three men still around the bat as Amit Mishra comes on.

9.2

Mishra to Hayden, 1 run, flights it up on leg stump, spins and Hayden eases it off the pads

Dhoni giving plenty of advice in Hindi

12.6

End of over 14 (5 runs) Australia 46/0
ML Hayden    16* (35b 3x4)      A Mishra    3-0-11-0
SM Katich    25* (50b 4x4)      A Kumble    3-1-13-0

14.1

Kumble to Katich, no run, pitches in the rough outside off, turns in sharply, hits his thigh

14.2

Kumble to Katich, no run, floated up, looking for drift, Katich gets well forward and defends

14.3

Kumble to Katich, no run, marries bat and pad and thrusts forward, struck outside the line

14.6

Kumble to Katich, no run, nearly rolls onto the stumps but Katich bats it away, Kumble fizzes it up, Katich strides forward to smother it and the inside-edge rolls near the base of off stump

So that is stumps on day two in Delhi. Handshakes all around as the players walk off. India's day in all, having put up 613 for 7, with Gambhir and Laxman scoring their first and second double-centuries on a bat-dominated day. Australia struggled without a Test-quality spinner but their openers, Katich and Hayden, have done well to add 50 in the 15 overs remaining in the day. Its still a batsman-friendly pitch, but the few puffs of dust from Kumble's seam-up deliveries into the rough will keep India interested, and Australia anxious.

Thats all the coverage we have for you. Do come back and see us tomorrow, same time, same website. On behalf of the scoring department and all the rest at Cricinfo, this is your commentator, Jamie Alter, signing off.

Sayonara. Not to be confused with cyanide, which is, of course, goodbye in any language.

End of over 15 (4 runs) Australia 50/0
SM Katich    29* (56b 5x4)      A Kumble    4-1-17-0
ML Hayden    16* (35b 3x4)      A Mishra    3-0-11-0

Zdraveite! Thats Bulgarian for hello. Don't ask why I started off with that, just sounded cool. Anyhow, a very warm welcome to you wherever in this maddening world you may be logging in from, whatever time zone, whatever continent. Its always a pleasure having your company for cricket, especially a Test match. I'm Jamie Alter, your commentator once again. Handling the scoring responsibilities is R Raju.

But enough about us, its day three at the Kotla and Australia will be looking up from base camp at a daunting mountain of runs. They've made a positive start, reaching 50 in 15 overs. On that note, an early morning email from Marto: "Matty Hayden to make a ton today. You can't keep the great man down for long!"

Looks to be another good morning in Delhi. Fans slowly trickling in. Hopefully we'll see a lot more. The pitch looks the same as yesterday from here, but the puffs of dust from a few spots last evening indicate its going to deteriorate. India's spinners should come into play, then. But I'd also watch out for Ishant Sharma. Critical first hour, either way. Can't wait for the cricket to start.

Another sharp email, from Dhaya: "I am not a Test player, but someone please tell Gambhir to get his elbows of his thighs when he is fielding at silly point. Come on man am I the only one who noticed that when he missed some chances in the first Test."

No my friend, you're not. He's had this problem for ages. India really need a specialist close catcher. Gambhir never anticipates the ball. Even yesterday he was getting up too early. He dropped catches in Sri Lanka that way.

Right then, here come the players, walking out in slow motion like in one of those Jerry Bruckheimer flicks, with U2 and Green Day's The Saints Are Coming playing in the background. No they're not, I'm kidding. That was just in my head. But wouldn't life be cooler with background music?

Hayden takes guard, on 16. Didn't face a whole lot yesterday. Zaheer has the ball. Two slips in place.

15.1

Khan to Hayden, no run, good morning, mate, says Zaheer, beginning the morning with a bouncer, which Hayden doesn't pick, gets into a tangle, the ball takes his helmet and bobs up to the on side, where there is no catching fielder

Hayden's a bit groggy. He's back on his feet now.

15.2

Khan to Hayden, no run, beaten by a peach outside off stump, pitching on a great length, straightening, lifting, and going on past a fending Hayden's bat

15.3

Khan to Hayden, no run, another bouncer, sharply jagging into Hayden's right shoulder as he hops up and takes his eyes off the ball, it gains on him at a good height, aggressive bowling

No close catchers. Two slips, point, cover, mid-off. Predominantly off-side field.

15.4

Khan to Hayden, no run, thats on a length and he comes forward to defend to point

15.5

Khan to Hayden, no run, fuller length outside off stump and he shoulders arms

15.6

Short leg, slip, leg gully in place as Kumble bounds into Katich.

16.1

Kumble to Katich, no run, from around the stumps, on the pads, nudged to Laxman

16.2

Kumble to Katich, 2 runs, fuller, faster, flatter, flicked from the off stump via an inside edge

Katich is a thruster. Plays spin well however. Three men around the bat.

16.3

Kumble to Katich, no run, lands on a good length outside off and slides in, defended off the pad

16.4

Kumble to Katich, no run, catch it, is the call! Thrusts forward a long way, the ball balloons up off glove and pad but the inside edge falls short of a diving Gambhir at forward short leg

16.5

Kumble to Katich, no run, gets well outside the crease, coming down, and pads it to Dravid at slip

16.6

Kumble to Katich, 1 run, keeps strike with a tuck off the pads between short leg and leg slip

End of over 17 (3 runs) Australia 53/0
SM Katich    32* (62b 5x4)      A Kumble    5-1-20-0
ML Hayden    16* (41b 3x4)      Z Khan    5-3-9-0

SM Katich    37* (67b 6x4)      A Kumble    5-1-20-0

Plenty of emails querying about the pitch. As I said last evening and this morning, it looks as if it will deteriorate as the day goes on. That spot outside the off stump, the rough, is what Kumble is targetting. If I were Navjot Singh Sidhu, I'd just say: "Wickets are like wives - you never know which way they will turn!"

18.1

Kumble to Katich, no run, flat outside off stump and he gets back and across to defend

18.2

Kumble to Katich, 2 runs, slides down and he turns it away for a couple

18.3

Kumble to Katich, no run, flatter delivery, he shuffles and works it to short leg

18.5

Kumble to Katich, no run, fuller delivery, no turn, and he defends

18.6

Kumble to Katich, no run, teasing length, bit of flight, Katich defends from off stump

End of over 19 (2 runs) Australia 60/0
SM Katich    39* (73b 6x4)      A Kumble    6-1-22-0
ML Hayden    16* (42b 3x4)      Z Khan    6-3-14-0

Khan to Hayden, no run, pitches on middle and off and slides in, on-driven to midwicket

19.2

Khan to Hayden, no run, gets back and defends a length ball back to Zaheer

19.3

Khan to Hayden, FOUR, no third man and so Hayden reaches out and slashes the short delivery up and over gully for four, aggressive shot and why not, with no protection in the deep

19.5

Khan to Hayden, no run, fuller now and he gets right over it, defending firmly to point

19.6

Khan to Hayden, FOUR, slides onto his pads and he tickles it down to fine leg for four

End of over 20 (8 runs) Australia 68/0

SM Katich    39* (73b 6x4)      A Kumble    6-1-22-0

20.1

Kumble to Katich, 1 run, flat well outside off, Katich walks across and flicks to the on side

20.2

20.3

Kumble to Katich, no run, flatter, on a better length, Katich gets back and across and flicks

20.4

Kumble to Katich, FOUR, reaches out to a wide one and drives superbly through cover

20.5

20.6

Kumble to Katich, no run, walks down, Kumble sees it, and Katich ends up padding it

End of over 21 (6 runs) Australia 74/0
SM Katich    44* (78b 7x4)      A Kumble    7-1-27-0
ML Hayden    24* (49b 5x4)      Z Khan    7-3-22-0

By far the strongest opening start Australia have had all series. I would have not bowled Kumble so early, and opened with Ishant and Zaheer. But again, I don't play Test cricket.

21.1

Khan to Hayden, no run, on a good length and he gets over the ball to defend to the off

21.2

Khan to Hayden, no run, on a good length again and Hayden gets tall to defend

Zaheer's hit pretty much all the good spots, very back of a length, keeping Hayden quiet.

21.3

Khan to Hayden, no run, a touch straighter, Hayden slumps over as he works it to midwicket

21.4

Khan to Hayden, no run, a touch fuller and Hayden comes forward, defending to point

21.5

Khan to Hayden, no run, brave leave, coming forward and shouldering arms to a slower ball that pitches just outside off stump and comes back in, doesn't carry properly to Dhoni

21.6

Khan to Hayden, no run, much fuller, honing in on off stump, jammed out to cover

End of over 22 (maiden) Australia 74/0
ML Hayden    24* (55b 5x4)      Z Khan    8-4-22-0
SM Katich    44* (78b 7x4)      A Kumble    7-1-27-0

22.1

Kumble to Katich, no run, tossed up outside off stump and Katich comes well in to block

22.2

Kumble to Katich, 4 byes, beaten on the attempted square drive, the ball pitches in the rough outside off stump and spits up like a rattlesnake, beating bat and Dhoni and flying away, thats going to keep Kumble and Amit Mishra very, very interested

22.3

Kumble to Katich, no run, tossed up wider outside off and Katich shoulders arms

22.4

Kumble to Katich, no run, pitches outside off, Katich walks across and defends to short leg

22.5

Kumble to Katich, 1 run, walks across his stumps and flicks one past short leg

22.6

Kumble to Hayden, no run, gets onto the back foot and defends a short one back

Ken, on email, echoing the sentiments of about 20 other emails I've read this morning: "The difference between Kumble and Dhoni as captain is that Dhoni make things happen. Can't understand Kumble starting ahead of Ishant. As great as he has been for India Kumble now needs to hand the mantle to Dhoni."

I agree, the Zaheer-Ishant duo would have been more effective. That rhythm they share is good.

End of over 23 (5 runs) Australia 79/0
ML Hayden    24* (56b 5x4)      A Kumble    8-1-28-0
SM Katich    45* (83b 7x4)      Z Khan    8-4-22-0

23.1

Khan to Katich, no run, ah, the inside-edge saves Katich, shuffling across his stumps and shaping to tuck the ball away to the on side, the ball shapes back in off the seam and he's rapped in front of off stump, but he got some wood on the shot

23.2
