End of over 54 (3 runs) Australia 191/1

ML Hayden    74* (148b 11x4 1x6)      V Sehwag    6-1-20-0

56.6

Mishra to Ponting, no run, tossed up gently on middle and leg and he defends watchfully

Ponting looks to be aggressive now and then. It hasn't worked so far. The pitch is slowly deteriorating. For now, its drinks for all and sundry. Hayden is looking good for that elusive century on tour. Both he and Ponting have built on Australia's strong start. The major threat has been Sehwag, who has ripped the ball across Hayden a few times. Mishra has toiled hard.

RT Ponting    40* (79b 7x4)      A Mishra    13-2-48-1

ML Hayden lbw b Sehwag 83 (247m 154b 13x4 1x6) SR: 53.89

Hussey is the new batsman. Replays indicate that ball may just have shaved the top of middle stump. You could understand if the umpire had not given it out as well. It skidded on and Hayden was well in the crease, struck dead in front.

64.2

Mishra to Ponting, no run, and again, an action replay of the last delivery, Mishra gets lovely turn and drift away from Ponting, pressing forward to play but missing by a whisker, in a flash Dhoni collects and breaks the stumps, there's an appeal as Mishra also went up because he thought he heard something, and in the end there's no decision

64.3

64.4

There's turn in this track, make no mistake, and Mishra and Sehwag are exploiting it. Harbhajan would have liked bowling here. Anyway, Dhoni makes a change, giving Sehwag a rest and turning to Ishant.

Warm afternoon in Delhi. Dhoni shouts instructions to Ishant.

67.5

Sharma to Hussey, no run, moves away too, plenty of swing, but too wide and he leaves

For all of you who have just tuned in and are emailing me and asking why Kumble isn't bowling, let me again say he has been taken to the hospital for treatment. And now, for the first time in ages, Tendulkar gets the ball. Dhoni trying to be different. Good to see.

MEK Hussey    12* (36b 2x4)      I Sharma    12-2-36-0

69.1

Sharma to Hussey, no run, ah ha ha, beaten on the nothing drive! Hussey doesn't get a stride forward and plays at a gem, landing on a length, sucking him forward, and reverse-swinging away to beat the outer edge of Hussey's bat! Where is second slip?

Sharma to Hussey, no run, comes onto the front foot and opts to leave that one be

69.3

69.4

Sharma to Ponting, no run, pitches on a good length and Ponting pushes it back to Ishant

69.5

Sharma to Ponting, no run, wrong line, a mile down leg stump, Dhoni has a hard time taking

69.6

Sharma to Ponting, no run, full and swinging into Ponting's pads, he slumps over as he attempts to flick, the ball moves back in very late and hits him on the pad, clearly going to miss leg stump, they all ask the question and Bowden shakes his head and calls for tea

"Is it just a coincidence that India have suddenly started looking menacing once Dhoni took over for an injured Kumble?" asks Derek Granger.

Thats a fair question you ask, Derek. There's no denying there has been a shift in momentum. Kumble is off the field with an injured finger, to all those who joined in late. Hayden was dismissed for 83 and Ponting has batted really well for his 61. Sehwag and Mishra got the ball to spit and now in Ishant's two overs before the tea break we've seen reverse swing. Do come back and join me shortly for the final session of what has been an absorbing day.

End of over 70 (1 run) Australia 237/2
RT Ponting    61* (116b 9x4)      I Sharma    13-2-37-0
MEK Hussey    13* (39b 2x4)      SR Tendulkar    1-0-2-0

Dave: "Although I'm not a huge fan of India, Kumble deserves some credit, over 600 wickets, a test century to his name, and just a good all round cricketer. Lets see how Dhoni goes when he comes in with India at 4-30 instead of 4-500. It seems too everybody sinking the boots into Haddin, well how many byes did Mr Perfect Dhoni let through in the 2nd test? Give these men a break, especially Kumble. Oh, and GO PUNTER!"

Ah! but what's happening with Brad Haddin. Joke is going around calling him Bad Hands. Poor fellow has had quite a bad time adjusting to the wickets in India.

SI from Taiwan: "What has Dhoni done differently so far? He has not 'made anything happen' yet. He has not put in a second slip(Jamie typed that was poor captaincy from Kumble, so this should poor from Dhoni as well surely?).Kumble bowled Sehwag and Mishra in tandem and from the same ends they are bowling now. Apart from his increased shouting, what exactly has Dhoni done differently? Is the field placing different? Any different strategy employed? The scoring rate has come down due to Hussey taking Hayden's place. Anyway it seems to be 'in-thing' to praise Dhoni for all what he does and doesn't. When Dravid was given captaincy intermittently during Ganguly's days, people used to rave how aggressive and innovative he was, I remember..."

Touche! But the bees went away after Kumble went no?! Ok OK bad joke. Any way the match is about to start. Let's go easy on the Dhoni V Kumble thingy.

Dave: "If Haddin is being called "Bad Hands" then he has made an auspicious start to his career ... after all, Rod Marsh was "Iron Gloves" for a while ..."

Ha! btw Bad hands has been in touch with Steve Rixon, who is here in India for ICL. He is working hard to adapt. Rixon has nothing but praise for him; how he played with broken thumb in West Indies and stuff. Best of luck to him for a good career behind the stumps.

Ok. All set for play. Here we go.

70.1

Khan to Hussey, 2 runs, drifts to the pads and Hussey tickles it to fine leg where Ganguly moves to his right to pick the ball

70.2

Khan to Hussey, no run, tries to correct his line but ends up well outside off stump. Hussey watches it sail past him harmlessly.

70.3

Khan to Hussey, 1 no ball, get it correct this time but has overstepped. It landed just outside off, on a length and came in, Hussey gets right behind the line to defend down the track.

70.3

Khan to Hussey, no run, bit of reverse. It shaped in from off and Hussey took care not to press his front leg too much across and pushed the ball to the off side. Good batsman, this Hussey. Risk-free batting.

70.4

Khan to Hussey, no run, teases him with just outside-the-off attack and Hussey thinks about the temptation but stays away from it in the end. Solid fella.

70.5

Khan to Hussey, no run, another one shaping in late, full and around the middle and off and Hussey offers the full face of the bat in defense. Compact forward defensive stroke

70.6

Khan to Hussey, no run, this one moves away, just outside off and we know what Hussey does: just lets it go.

End of over 71 (3 runs) Australia 240/2

"You've got to choose between tightening your belt or losing your pants," a wise sage once said, and India have to decide what route they want to take. Dhoni has been active, but a few field placings, namely the lack of a second slip, has hurt them. This partnership swells and Ponting approaches another hundred. India have only managed two wickets, despite having a massive cushion of 613 runs. Australia are still miles away from safety, however. Here comes Sehwag, who has turned the ball the most.

85.1

Sehwag to Hussey, 1 run, lands on a length and he gets back, pushing the ball to cover, where Laxman, Ganguly and Ishant all converge but cannot decide who will pick the ball up so Hussey gets an easy single, now thats superb fielding
