The ECB have confirmed that Michael Vaughan will miss the entire Test series in India, and probably the seven-match one-day series that follows, after he underwent further tests on his injured knee.

Vaughan flew back to the UK the day before the series began, and has now undergone an ultrasound guided injection into his right knee following a visit to a specialist.

A statement released by the ECB said: "The specialist has advised Michael to rest the knee completely for two weeks before recommencing his rehabilitation programme under the supervision of the Yorkshire Country Cricket Club physiotherapist.

"Michael has been ruled out of the current Test series against India. His knee will be re-assessed in due course but at this stage it is not anticipated that he will be fit for the one-day international series."

In the absence of Vaughan and Marcus Trescothick, who flew home for personal reasons, Andrew Flintoff is leading England in the first Test at Nagpur. An update on the injury to Simon Jones, who twisted his knee in the nets on the eve of the Test, will be issued in due course.
