Pakistan in India Test Series - 1st Test

India v Pakistan

India won by 6 wickets

Overs 1-50  | Overs 51-100

9.30 am local time: Yasir Hameed is Salman Butt's opening partner today. It's the fifth opening combination they've used on this tour so far. Zaheer Khan will open the attack for India, with Munaf Patel operating at the other end. Zaheer's got three slips and two gullies in place.

Simon Taufel and Billy Doctrove are the umpires. And I'm George Binoy, your commentator for the duration of this Test. Keep those emails coming and enjoy yourselves.

There's a misty haze around the ground as Zaheer runs in from over the wicket to Butt.

9.00 am: Shoaib Malik and Anil Kumble, in his first Test as captain, are ready to toss. Kumble flips, Malik calls heads and it has fallen heads. Malik has no hesitation in batting first.

Pakistan are playing three fast-bowlers and just Danish Kaneria as the specialist spinner, so they are indeed banking on pace. India, on the other hand, have picked two fast bowlers and two spinners.

Kumble says it's a "great feeling and an honour to captain India". He would have batted first too but he's OK with giving his fast bowlers use of the early-morning conditions. He says the pitch looks a little different from the one he took ten wickets on in 1999 but is fairly confident that it will turn later in the match.

India have left out Murali Kartik, Ishant Sharma and Yuvraj Singh, which means VVS Laxman will bat at No 6 and Munaf Patel will share the new ball.

Here's the Indian XI. I'll have the Pakistan team up in a jiffy.

India: 1 Wasim Jaffer, 2 Dinesh Karthik, 3 Rahul Dravid, 4 Sachin Tendulkar, 5 Sourav Ganguly, 6 VVS Laxman, 7 Mahendra Singh Dhoni (wk), 8 Harbhajan Singh, 9 Anil Kumble (capt), 10 Zaheer Khan, 11 Munaf Patel.

Here you go ...

Pakistan: 1 Salman Butt, 2 Yasir Hameed, 3 Younis Khan, 4 Mohammad Yousuf, 5 Shoaib Malik (capt), 6 Misbah-ul-Haq, 7 Kamran Akmal (wk), 8 Sohail Tanvir, 9 Mohammad Sami, 10 Shoaib Akhtar, 11 Danish Kaneria.

Cricinfo has launched the Test edition of Fantasy Cricket. If you had success in the one-day version, check this out.

8.50 am: The pitch has a few cracks in some places and has grass cover in other areas. It might crumble on days four and five, it might not. But win toss and bat should be the way to go. And history says that the captain winning the toss has always batted at the Kotla. However, the teams winning the toss have won only five out of the 28 Tests, and lost ten.

The new ball could be a handful early on though and the team batting first will have to be watchful at the start.

8.30 am: Hello everybody and welcome to Test cricket. We're 30 minutes away from the toss of the first Test between India and Pakistan in Delhi. India won the one-dayers 3-2 but that's done and dusted now. The fight for the bigger prize begins today.

It's a lovely winter's morning in Delhi; the kind that makes you want a sweater and a hot cup of tea, the kind that makes your hand sting a little when catching a cricket ball.

Both teams, unfortunately, have suffered blows to their respective pace attacks. India have lost RP Singh and Sreesanth due to injury, while Pakistan have rested Umar Gul, who had stress pain in his back, as a "precautionary measure".

We've got a comprehensive preview package for you. If you think it's high time Yuvraj Singh should make the Test XI, read why Anil Kumble says he'll have to wait a little longer.

Dileep Premachandran look's at Pakistan's side of things ahead of the Test and says that they will be banking on pace.

Siddhartha Vaidyanathan, who's Cricinfo's man at the Feroz Shah Kotla, analyses India's fast-bowling arsenal and says that a couple of injuries leaves the attack a little thin.

And Mathew Varghese's spiffing stats preview says that Pakistan should beware of Anil Kumble for the Kotla is his happy hunting ground.

And if you've read all of the above already and are what to do until the cricket starts I've got a few helpful suggestions. You could play the Test edition of Fantasy Cricket. There's about 15 minutes left for deadline to submit teams for the first Test.

Khan to Salman Butt, no run, Zaheer begins with a loosener, it pitches on middle and leg stump and slides down leg side, Butt tries to flick but the ball is too far away from him

0.2

Khan to Salman Butt, 1 leg bye, massive appeal from Zaheer, he bowled it a bit straighter, pitching outside off stump and slanting towards leg, Butt leans across his stump and gets hit on the pad, replays showed that the ball would have just clipped leg stump but that's a hard one to give for the umpire

0.3

Khan to Yasir Hameed, no run, full ball on off stump to the right-hander, Hameed gets an edge towards Harbhajan at cover

0.4

Khan to Yasir Hameed, 1 wide, extremely wide ball outside off stump, that's a wide even in a Test match

Khan to Yasir Hameed, FOUR, he's cover-driven that splendidly, Hameed reached out for a wide ball which was full in length and drove it past Harbhajan at cover, that's the first boundary of the match

0.5

Khan to Yasir Hameed, no run, Hameed lets one go through to Dhoni

0.6

Khan to Yasir Hameed, no run, pitches on a good length outside off, left-alone by Hameed

Yasir Hameed    4* (4b 1x4)      Z Khan    1-0-5-0
Salman Butt    0* (2b)

Here's Munaf from over the wicket to Butt, who is standing a few inches outside his crease.

1.1

Patel to Salman Butt, no run, Munaf pitches his first ball wide outside off stump and slants it towards slips, that would have been a one-day wide

1.2

1.3

Patel to Salman Butt, 4 leg byes, 130 kmh, strays in line once again, Munaf drifts on to the pads and although Butt misses the flick, he gets a bit of pad on it and the ball beats Dhoni, who dives full stretch to his right, and runs to the fine-leg boundary

1.5

Patel to Salman Butt, no run, a bit too wide outside off again, allowing Butt to safely let the ball go through to Dhoni

2.2

Khan to Yasir Hameed, no run, pitches on a good length on off stump and seams away from the right-hander, Hameed waits on the back foot and shoulders arms

2.3

Khan to Yasir Hameed, 1 run, banged in short and Hameed swivels on the back foot and pulls, he doesn't connect properly but manages to get it away to Ganguly at fine leg

2.4

Khan to Salman Butt, 1 run, too straight, much too straight, Butt helps himself to an easy offering and clips the ball off his pads towards long leg

2.5

Khan to Yasir Hameed, no run, this one pitches on off stump and comes back into the right-hander instead of slanting it away, Hameed had moved across his stumps to cover for the movement away from him and had to defend hurriedly

2.6

Khan to Yasir Hameed, no run, and this one slants away from Hameed and beats the outside edge of his drive, excellent couple of balls to end the over

End of over 3 (2 runs) Pakistan 12/0
Yasir Hameed    5* (9b 1x4)      Z Khan    2-0-7-0
Salman Butt    1* (9b)      MM Patel    1-1-0-0

3.1

Patel to Salman Butt, no run, good length ball on middle stump, defended on the front foot towards mid off

3.2

Patel to Salman Butt, no run, 130.4 kmh from Munaf, the length is too short and the line is too wide for Butt to be interested in playing at it

Patel to Salman Butt, no run, that's a better line, Munaf pitches close to off stump and the ball goes straight through after Butt moves on to the front foot and lets it go

3.4

Patel to Salman Butt, no run, 134 kmh, Munaf gets one to kick from a good length but the line is outside off stump and Butt shoulders arms

Patel to Salman Butt, no run, pitches on a good length outside off and bends back into the left-hander a fraction, Butt moves forward and lifts his bat out of the way

End of over 4 (maiden) Pakistan 12/0

4.3

4.5

Khan to Salman Butt, no run, this one pitches on middle and off and angles a touch away from Butt who wristly glides the ball towards gully

No swing at all so far.

4.6

Khan to Salman Butt, OUT, bowled him! Zaheer gets the ball to cut back into the left-hander off the pitch after angling it away from him, Butt was caught on his crease and tried to cut, the ball was far too close for the shot and went under the bat and crashed into the stumps, it kept a trifle low as well, the ball actually hit the top of off stump but, given the length it pitched, it would have gone over on a bouncier pitch

Salman Butt b Khan 1 (20m 20b 0x4 0x6) SR: 5.00

End of over 5 (1 run) Pakistan 13/1
     Z Khan    3-0-8-1

Patel to Yasir Hameed, no run, wide outside the off stump, left alone by the batsman

End of over 6 (maiden) Pakistan 13/1
Yasir Hameed    6* (16b 1x4)      MM Patel    3-3-0-0

6.3

Khan to Younis Khan, 1 leg bye, another short ball but this one is directed down leg side, Younis fends it away and Dhoni dives to his left to save runs

Short leg comes into place, Jaffer it is. Mid-on moves to deep backward square, which means the only player in front of square on the leg side is Jaffer.

6.4

Khan to Yasir Hameed, no run, short of a length delivery outside off stump, Hameed lets it go

6.5

Khan to Yasir Hameed, no run, too far outside off stump from Zaheer, Hameed was never going to play at that

Zaheer comes in from round the wicket.

6.6

Khan to Yasir Hameed, 3 runs, Hameed uses the angle into him to lean on the front foot and push the ball into the gaping vacant space at midwicket, Jaffer has to give chase from short leg

End of over 7 (4 runs) Pakistan 17/1
Yasir Hameed    9* (19b 1x4)      Z Khan    4-0-11-1

Patel to Yasir Hameed, no run, good length delivery on off stump, Hameed moves on to the back foot and plays the ball towards gully

7.2

Patel to Yasir Hameed, no run, fuller length this time around the off stump but Hameed still stays in his crease and glances the ball towards Kumble at gully

7.3

Patel to Yasir Hameed, FOUR, that's a gift, a rank half-volley on the pads, Hameed leans across his stumps and, with perfect balance, flicks the ball through midwicket, Jaffer gives chase but to no avail, that was sweetly timed

7.4

Patel to Yasir Hameed, no run, too straight once again but not as leg-side as the previous ball, Hameed drives to mid-on

7.5

Patel to Yasir Hameed, no run, Munaf tests Hameed with a short ball but it's directed down leg side so Hameed easily evades it

7.6

Patel to Yasir Hameed, 1 run, good length ball cuts into Hameed after pitching on off and middle, he nudges it towards midwicket for a single

End of over 8 (5 runs) Pakistan 22/1
Yasir Hameed    14* (25b 2x4)      MM Patel    4-3-5-0
Younis Khan    0* (3b)      Z Khan    4-0-11-1

Absolutely no swing for the fast bowlers.

8.1

Khan to Yasir Hameed, no run, full delivery on off stump, Hameed leans on to the front foot and drives towards point

8.2

Khan to Yasir Hameed, no run, pitches on off stump and slants away from Hameed who lets the ball go through to Dhoni

8.3

Khan to Yasir Hameed, no run, Hameed moves forward and outside the line of off stump to defend a ball that is angling across him, he gets hit on the pad but the appeal for leg before is muted because the impact was outside the line

8.4

Khan to Yasir Hameed, no run, left alone outside the off stump, just a bit too wide from Zaheer

8.5

Khan to Yasir Hameed, no run, banged in short, but on this pitch the ball has to be really short for it to bounce high enough so Hameed has plenty of time to get under it

8.6

Khan to Yasir Hameed, no run, another short ball but it's down leg side this time, Hameed moves towards off and lets it go

Hardly a full house at the Kotla, says Siddhartha Vaidyanathan.

End of over 9 (maiden) Pakistan 22/1
Yasir Hameed    14* (31b 2x4)      Z Khan    5-1-11-1
Younis Khan    0* (3b)      MM Patel    4-3-5-0

"That is a coat of fog out there, " emails Sandil. "I can barely see the players on TV, wondering how Sid V is able to see them from the commentary box."

9.1

Patel to Younis Khan, 1 run, defended on the back foot towards cover and the batsmen sprint through for the single

9.2

Patel to Yasir Hameed, 1 run, pitches on middle stump and angles into the pads, Hameed flicks it off his pads towards fine leg

Siddhartha says: "A local suggests that lack of swing is possibly because of the new construction at the far end, from where Munaf is bowling. It blocks the breeze that used to help earlier."

9.3

Patel to Younis Khan, 2 runs, short ball outside off stump, Younis moves back and punches through cover for a couple of runs

9.4

Patel to Younis Khan, no run, pitches on off stump and seams away from Younis who was caught in two minds, whether to let it go or play at it, he ends up wafting at it and the ball seams past his outside edge

Patel to Younis Khan, no run, this one pitches just outside off stump and holds its line through to Dhoni after Younis gets on to the front foot and lets it go

9.6

Patel to Younis Khan, no run, another appeal for leg before, Younis came forward and across and tried to work the ball on the leg side, he got hit on the pad but it was too high

End of over 10 (4 runs) Pakistan 26/1
Younis Khan    3* (8b)      MM Patel    5-3-9-0
Yasir Hameed    15* (32b 2x4)      Z Khan    5-1-11-1

10.1

10.6

Khan to Younis Khan, no run, defended to point off the back foot

End of over 11 (5 runs) Pakistan 31/1
Younis Khan    7* (13b 1x4)      Z Khan    6-1-16-1

11.5

Patel to Yasir Hameed, no run, left alone once again outside off stump

11.6

Patel to Yasir Hameed, no run, Munaf roars another appeal but the ball was missing leg, Hameed looked to flick a full ball by moving across his stumps but fell over a touch and was hit on the pads, the angle would have taken the ball comfortably past leg stump

End of over 12 (4 runs) Pakistan 35/1
Yasir Hameed    20* (39b 3x4)      MM Patel    6-3-13-0
Younis Khan    7* (13b 1x4)      Z Khan    6-1-16-1

14.1

Khan to Yasir Hameed, no run, defended towards the offside off the front foot

14.2

Khan to Yasir Hameed, 1 run, pitches on middle and leg stump, worked off the pads through midwicket

"Why Kumble is so defensive in fielding only 4 bowlers on home pitch? He should have asked Laxman or Dravid to open with Jaffer and brought in Yuvraj instead of Karthik, thereby he could have had an option of using Yuvraj's left-arm spin for variation besides a strong batting lineup! Afterall, Yuvraj is at his peak now!" says Madhu.

Mohammad Yousuf    8* (7b 2x4)      Z Khan    8-2-25-2

"I cant understand all this talk and the media frenzy around Yuvraj's non inclusion. No one spoke up when Dravid, a captain till recently was dropped for ODI. Yuvraj's technique in Tests is questionable and till we have the services of batsmen of Laxman and Dravid's calibre, its perfectly allright for him to wait for his time," says Kartik.

11.30 pm: That's lunch on the first day. India have won the first session, picking up three wickets for 74 runs. All the bowlers tested the Pakistan batsmen and there were umpteen leg-before appeals several of which were very close. Credit to the umpires for getting them all right, they've been kept busy this morning.

"Kumble seems to have a simple plan.. unsettle the batsmen by rotating the bowlers regularly. This is what a captain should do and he is doing at his very best. Keep it going," emails Satya.

Cricinfo has launched the Test edition of Fantasy Cricket. If you had success in the one-day version, check this out during the lunch break.

I'll be back at 12.10 pm local time (in about 40 minutes) for the second session.

"History suggests that Pakistan has recovered froma first-morning collapse to go on and win Test matches against India. Most recent ones against India in Karachi (2005) and Calcutta (1999). Ironically on both ocassions it required a defiant knock by wicket keeper. Moin Khan in Calcutta and Kamran Akmal in Karachi. Will history repeat itself?," wonders Ashfaq.

The Indian bowlers have been spot on after Kumble lost the toss. They've bowled very few four balls and have got considerable seam movement off the pitch. India went in with only four bowlers but Ganguly has been outstanding as the fifth bowler so far. He's built up pressure at one end by being miserly and picked up Mohammad Yousuf's wicket.

Munaf Patel has also impressed on his comeback. He's bowled between 130 to 140 kmh and hit the batsmen on the pads regularly. Harbhajan singh has had just one over so far but he should come into the attack soon enough. Kumble has persisted with attacking fields, rotated his bowlers regularly and looked positive on his first day as Test captain.
