South Africa tour of India, 1st Test: India v South Africa at Chennai, Mar 26-30, 2008
26,27,28,29,30 March 2008 (5-day match)
  • Overs 1-50
  • Overs 51-100
  • Overs 101-150
  • Overs 151-200

9.30 am local time: The umpires for the first Test are Tony Hill and Asad Rauf. They've made their way out to the middle, and the Indians are out there as well. Graeme Smith and Neil McKenzie are South Africa's openers. Fingers crossed for an exciting contest, and hopefully devoid of all the drama that went on in Australia.

RP Singh, who's recovered from a hamstring injury, will open the bowling. He's running in from over the wicket to Smith. Three slips, a gully and a short leg in place.

I'm George Binoy and I'll be your commentator for the Test. If you're aren't going to be at a computer but still want to read our ball-by-ball commentary, click here to get it on your mobile phone.

Toss, 9.00 am: Graeme Smith has won the toss and South Africa will bat. Sensible decision too given that India have two spinners and the pitch turn later in the Test.

Kumble also said it would have been ideal to bat first but he's hoping his new-ball bowlers will take early wickets.

South Africa have left out JP Duminy, Monde Zondeki and Robin Peterson for the first Test.

South Africa: 1 Neil McKenzie, 2 Graeme Smith (capt), 3 Hashim Amla, 4 Jacques Kallis, 5 Ashwell Prince, 6 AB de Villiers, 7 Mark Boucher (wk), 8 Morne Morkel, 9 Paul Harris, 10 Dale Steyn, 11 Makhaya Ntini.

India are playing just four specialist bowlers, which means there's no place for Irfan Pathan. RP Singh and Sreesanth will share the new ball. Wasim Jaffer returns to the top of the order.

India: 1 Virender Sehwag, 2 Wasim Jaffer, 3 Rahul Dravid, 4 Sachin Tendulkar, 5 Sourav Ganguly, 6 VVS Laxman, 7 Mahendra Singh Dhoni (wk), 8 Anil Kumble (capt), 9 Harbhajan Singh, 10 RP Singh, 11 Sreesanth.

8.30 am: Hello everybody and welcome to Cricinfo's coverage of South Africa's tour of India. The series involves three Tests, the first of which begins at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai today.

When there's a Test in Chennai, it usually rains - India v Australia 2003-04 and India v Sri Lanka 2005-06 - but Siddhartha Vaidyanathan, Cricinfo's man at the venue, tells me that it's a perfect day. Well perfect in the sense that it isn't raining for it's sunny, humid and it will get hotter. The stadium isn't full yet but there are people waiting in long queues outside.

If you haven't entered Cricinfo's fantasy game for this series as yet there's just enough time to do so. Click here to create your team, remember it's a six-a-side team for the Test series.

Check out Cricinfo's preview of the Test for an overview of what lies ahead and Siddhartha Vaidyanathan's (I will refer to him as Sid V in the future to save time and energy) piece on the MA Chidambaram Stadium being one of Sachin Tendulkar's favourite haunts .

The toss is about ten minutes away and although there has been rain in Chennai over the last week, which could have lived up the pitch, the decision for the captains should be a no brainer - win the toss and bat. The pitch is expected to turn on days three to five.

It's a hot day in Chennai so the umpires have called for drinks after 40 minutes of play. The pitch hasn't had anything for the fast bowlers. The odd ball has kept low and there's been no swing. Sreesanth has got a few balls to seam off the pitch but that's about it.

South Africa will be happy with their start. The openers have done well to see off the new ball and score at a steady pace.

Lunch, 11.30 am local time: South Africa won the toss and chose to bat and have scored 109 for no loss off 25 overs at a run-rate of 4.36. They've struck 19 fours in that session and though the pitch hasn't helped the bowlers, India have given away far too many loose deliveries.

Both openers have scored half-centuries and none of the bowlers have been able to create any sort of pressure. The over-rate has been slow but the players did take two drinks breaks in the session because it's so hot. I'll be back at 12.10 pm local time for the second session.
