South Africa in India Test Series - 2nd Test

India v South Africa

South Africa won by an innings and 90 runs

Overs 0-50

9.30 Right, we're ready for the start. Jaffer has the strike. Jamie: "Here come the players. A bit of cheer from the sparse crowd as Virender Sehwag twirls his bat and loosens up his shoulders. Wouldnt they like hundred before lunch?"

Righto, Steyn has the new ball. Three slips and a gully. 9.15
Jamie Alter, who's found himself at Motera, makes his first observations: "There's but a trickle of supporters into the Motera Stadium this morning. Loud cheers as the toss happened. There's a brass band forming along the deep midwicket boundary, being given instructions to start piping up. Adds to an otherwise quiet scene. A couple of the Indian players just winding down their practice drills."

We heard that the weather is a little more pleasant compared to Chennai. That's now. Claustrophobia may just set in later.....April, the perfect month to play Test cricket in India, isn't it?

South Africa would want to erase memories of their previous Test here. If you want to revisit the 1996 Dustbowl, click here.

Toss: Anil Kumble has won the toss and India will bat first. It could be a bit of gamble, facing Steyn and Gang on this first-day pitch which is likely to give maximum assistance to the seamers now.

Teams: India have opted for five bowlers, with Irfan Pathan coming in for the injured Sachin Tendulkar. South Africa are unchanged from the previous game.

No place, unfortunately, for Mohammad Kaif who's worked so hard over the season to fight his way back into the team. Yuvraj Singh's form isn't very convincing at the moment, but no such doubts over Irfan Pathan. He will be an asset at No.7. Playing five bowlers has always been perceived as a match-winning strategy by India, but they haven't always been lucky in pulling it off. The batting looks is great shape though. Let's see how things unfold.

Ishant isn't fit but fortunately for India, Kumble is. He had a groin niggle in Chennai and was off the field for a while on the 5th day. RP Singh will feel the heat but this particular surface is expected to give him much more assistance.

India: 1 Virender Sehwag, 2 Wasim Jaffer, 3 Rahul Dravid, 4 VVS Laxman, 5 Sourav Ganguly, 6 Mahendra Singh Dhoni (wk), 7 Irfan Pathan, 8 Anil Kumble (capt), 9 Harbhajan Singh, 10 RP Singh, 11 Sreesanth.

South Africa: 1 Neil McKenzie, 2 Graeme Smith (capt), 3 Hashim Amla, 4 Jacques Kallis, 5 Ashwell Prince, 6 AB de Villiers, 7 Mark Boucher (wk), 8 Morne Morkel, 9 Paul Harris, 10 Dale Steyn, 11 Makhaya Ntini.

8.55
Pitch: Alright, the experts have given their verdict. The pitch does have a sprinkling of grass, but overall, the surface appears really hard and looks fairly good for batting. The grass is a good sign and the pitch certainly looks more sporting than the one in Chennai.

8.45 local: 'allo 'allo and welcome where ever you are to Cricinfo's coverage of the second Test between India and South Africa in Ahmedabad. This is Kanishkaa Balachandran, and you will have my company through this Test. Allow me to welcome my fellow crew - Binoy George (on scoring), Dileep (on bulletin) and Jamie Alter, who's keeping an eye on things as they unfold, at the venue.

I'm sure all of you are waiting to hear about 'that' 22-yard surface and how many blades of grass exist on the pitch. If it makes you feel any better, the curiosity is chewing me up as well. We'll bring you news of the toss, pitch, teams and the works very shortly.

Steyn to Singh, OUT, how does any tailender play that? Steyn bangs it in short of a length on middle, the bounce really squares up RP and the pace too gets the better of him as he tries to fend it off, he fails to keep the ball down and the ball lobs off the top half of his bat and goes to Smith at first slip

India proved why they are the Twenty20 champs - bowled out in exactly 20 overs. You lay out featherbeds, you get 500 plus scores at will. You dish out a seaming surface and you get a capitulation inside a session. That's the beauty of Test cricket.

South Africa will have one over before lunch

Steyn takes his 8th five-wicket haul in Tests. In less than six months, he's made it a regular habit.
