It was quite a fitting way to end the day. South Africa meant business in the morning and rounded off the first day with a boundary.

It's difficult to explain why India capitulated in the morning. They have opted to bat first in seaming conditions before and succeeded (Headingley 2002). It's just that when those conditions are replicated at home, things don't always go to plan. The top order were tested to the hilt with some fine displays of seam bowling on helpful conditions. Ntini, Steyn and Morkel managed alarming cut on a grassy pitch and the batsmen were caught off guard on a skiddy surface. The bowlers induced the mistakes more than anything else.

What India truly lacked was a bowler to match Steyn's pace and it's a pity Ishant Sharma had to sit out this game due to his injury. RP's pace rarely troubled the batsmen and neither did Irfan. Harbhajan has to be applauded for his efforts. It was more like the Harbhajan of the old, using flight to deceive the batsmen instead of firing it in flat. He will be a threat tomorrow and a couple of wickets will expose the tail.

Yesterday, South Africa lost an important toss and bundled India out for 76, scarcely believable, given India's strength at home. South Africa begin the day effectively at 147 for 4 and are in firm control at the moment.

That doesn't mean India don't stand a chance. Their best chance of clawing back is in the first session - yesterday the South African seamers extracted lethal cut and movement off the pitch and the batting conditions eased up considerably by the afternoon.

Pitch: The experts say that the pitch looks slightly greener this morning and the moisture has surfaced again. Kallis and de Villiers will have to approach the morning session with caution and a couple of early wickets could even the score. India would ideally like to bring the lead down to less than 200, but that would take some getting.

A really fruitful session for South Africa and really, Kallis and de Villiers did exactly what was asked for. They played out the entire session and ensured nothing slipped.

Kallis however, has led a very charmed life. He was extremely lucky when a nudge off Harbhajan trickled onto his stumps and failed to dislodge the bails. He was also plumb in front of middle while attempting to pull Sreesanth. Despite that, he ensured he didn't do anything silly to give his wicket away. India will still feel very aggrieved though.

de Villiers' innings has been chanceless and his purple patch in the middle order continues. He had a lean trot as an opener for a while but the demotion has worked.
