South Africa in India Test Series - 3rd Test

India v South Africa

India won by 8 wickets

Overs 1-50  | Overs 51-100

9.29 am local time: Play is about to get under way. Wasim Jaffer and Virender Sehwag are opening the innings for India. Jaffer will take strike, facing Dale Steyn, who is bowling from over the wicket. Three slips and a gully in place.

I'm George Binoy, your commentator for the day.

If you're aren't going to be at a computer but still want to read our ball-by-ball commentary, click here to get it on your mobile phone.

"Sehwag had a chip on his shoulder when he was left out of the one-day team in Australia. He came back with a vengeance on a dead Chepauk pitch, but his true mettle will be tested in Kanpur on a pitch which sometimes produces devilish bounce while at other times the ball keeps very low," says Dr Sethuraman.

9.23 am : We aren't very far away from the start of play. Both teams have been warming up for the last half hour. The weather is clear and sunny: the players will take two drinks breaks per session because of the heat and 12 minutes will be added on to the final session to make up for lost time.

Day two, 9.00 am: Hello everybody and welcome (and welcome back) to Cricinfo's coverage of the final Test between India and South Africa in Kanpur. Ten South African wickets fell on the first day for 265 runs on a pitch that spun, bounced and kept low. Only time will tell how good that total is but rest assured that batting on this pitch is not easy, a welcome change from the featherbeds. A first innings lead will be critical from India's point of view for they will have to bat last and chase a target. They will be up against a quality fast-bowling attack and Paul Harris, who should be effective on this track.

Virender Sehwag's performance will have a big impact. If he bats for a session, India will score rapidly but if South Africa dismiss him cheaply, then they will be confident of making run-scoring extremely difficult for the more orthodox batsmen.

"I just wanted to know what South Africa's total would have been had India's fielding been tighter," asks Anuj. I reckon about 235-240 not much more.

Lunch, 11.32 am local time: It's been an enthralling first session folks. India have scored 88 for 2 but they've been tested severely by South Africa's bowlers. The ball is already reverse swinging for the fast bowlers and Paul Harris has given precious little away. Questions are being consistently asked of the batsmen and so far Dravid and Laxman have done a tremendous job for India. However, South Africa were in a stronger position at this stage yesterday and they collapsed after lunch. India still have a lot of hard work to do to catch up to South Africa's 265.

I'll be back in 40 minutes for the second session.

Siddhartha Vaidyanathan makes this observation in the bulletin: "Paul Harris, who conceded just nine runs in eight overs, was already posing problems but the two batsmen [Dravid and Laxman] used their front-foot techniques to counter him. Unlike South Africa's batsmen, who played the spinners mainly off the back foot , Laxman and Dravid made sure they got to the pitch of the ball before deciding on where to place the ball." Also India's batsmen have not used the sweep against Harris, whereas Smith and Amla employed the shot frequently against India's spinners.
