South Africa in India Test Series - 3rd Test

India v South Africa

India won by 8 wickets

Overs 1-50  | Overs 51-100

9.25 am local time: About five minutes away from the start now. Graeme Smith and Neil McKenzie will open for South Africa. They've done an excellent job on the tour so far and South Africa's chances of taking the series will be boosted greatly if they fire once again. India's new ball attack has been a huge disappointment in the first two Tests. RP Singh was off colour and he has been dropped while Sreesanth has been good in patches but largely erratic. Ishant Sharma will return to share the new ball after recovering from toe and finger injuries. He was outstanding in Australia, can he perform on Indian pitches?

I'm George Binoy and I'll be your commentator for this Test.

Sreesanth has the new ball, bowling from over the wicket to McKenzie. Two slips and a gully in place.

Toss, 9.00 am: Graeme Smith has won the toss and South Africa will bat first. No surprises there. The big news is that Mahendra Singh Dhoni was at the toss for India which means that Anil Kumble is not fit. Dhoni is incidentally the first wicketkeeper to lead India in a Test.

It's a massive toss for South Africa to win. A solid first-innings performance, while the pitch is at its relative best, will be invaluable.

South Africa have named an unchanged XI from the Ahmedabad Test.

South Africa: 1 Neil McKenzie, 2 Graeme Smith (capt), 3 Hashim Amla, 4 Jacques Kallis, 5 Ashwell Prince, 6 AB de Villiers, 7 Mark Boucher (wk), 8 Morne Morkel, 9 Paul Harris, 10 Dale Steyn, 11 Makhaya Ntini.

India have made three changes to their XI. Kumble's unfit while RP Singh and Irfan Pathan have been dropped. Yuvraj Singh and Ishant Sharma, who has been passed fit after recovering from toe and finger injuries, are the replacements, which means India have gone in with only two specialist spinners. Had Kumble been fit I suspect they might have been three. Part-time spinners Virender Sehwag and Yuvraj will be called upon if required.

India: 1 Virender Sehwag, 2 Wasim Jaffer, 3 Rahul Dravid, 4 VVS Laxman, 5 Sourav Ganguly, 6 Yuvraj Singh, 7 Mahendra Singh Dhoni (capt & wk), 8 Harbhajan Singh, 9 Piyush Chawla, 10 Sreesanth, 11 Ishant Sharma.

8.35 am: Hello champs and welcome to Cricinfo's coverage of the third Test between India and South Africa at Green Park in Kanpur. South Africa lead the series 1-0, leaving India in a must-win situation.

India have not lost a Test in Kanpur in the last 25 years and from all the pre-match hype, the pitch has been tailored for spin. The amount of talk about the dustiness and dryness of the pitch and when it will crack has rivalled the hype about the WACA pitch in Perth, when India were in Australia. Sidharth Monga, Cricinfo's man in Kanpur, here has written about the Green Park track.

A worry for India will be Anil Kumble's fitness. He was going to take a call this morning and whether India field three spinners or not could depend on how he pulls up. Click here for Cricinfo's preview of the third Test.

The South Africa captain Graeme Smith, however, remained confident despite the condition of the pitch. "We beat Pakistan at Newlands where it spun, we beat Pakistan away where it spun," he said.

Check out S Rajesh's stats analysis on the Kanpur Test. He says it has traditionally been a superb venue for openers.

We're about ten minutes away from the toss and, given that this track may deteriorate quickly, winning it could be absolutely crucial. I'll give you the news of the teams and whether Kumble is fit to play as soon as I have it. South Africa have the option of playing the second spinner in robin Peterson but I think it's unlikely they'll change a pace attack that's in awesome form.

The bowlers haven't had an impact in the first 45 minutes of the day. Smith and McKenzie are getting settled in and South Africa have scored fluently. The bounce has been low so far but there haven't been consistent alarms for the batsmen.

"Is this the same Indian side from Australia? Should we celebrating a South African revival or bemoaning an Indian relapse into bad habits? As a cricket fan, it's certainly frustrating to see India suddenly go frail," says Brendan.

Lunch, 11.30 am local time: South Africa have done extremely well in this first session, scoring 80 runs for the loss of McKenzie. India's new ball bowlers were ineffective and Harbhajan, although he's got turn and bounce from this pitch, hasn't taken a wicket in nine overs. Chawla provided the breakthrough in his first over but the dismissal was brought about largely due to McKenzie's indiscretion. There is assistance for the spinners on this pitch and it remains to be seen if they will cause problems consistently for the batsmen.

I'll be back in 40 minutes for the second session.
