South Africa in India Test Series - 1st Test

India v South Africa

South Africa won by an innings and 6 runs

Overs 1-50  | Overs 51-100  | Overs 101-150  | Overs 151-200

Hello and a warm welcome to the day 1 of the first Test between India and South Africa.

Pitch The pitch is lot more browner today as compared to the tracks served up here for the previous international games, says SM Gavaskar. It will dry up and help spinners, adds SMG. 'Win toss, bat first' is SMG's mantra and lets see whether any captain disagrees with him.

Toss: Smith has won the toss and has chosen to bat. "We have had a warm-up game. We have covered up all our bases and hope to put it in place in the game. We have come here to beat India at home. We have a pretty decent record here in India. Hopefully we can start well today and set a good tone. We just got one change. Paul Harris comes in for Ryan

Big news for India No Laxman and no Rohit Sharma. Laxman didn't get fit and Rohit injured himself in the morning during practice.

Dhoni "In the morning Rohit got injured and Laxman too is not fit. So we have Wridiman Saha . On our track we have to bat first but we can't do anything about it. It's a good opportunity for Badrinath. He is a very experienced domestic player. It's also a good opportunity for Saha."

For those SA fans who aren't too aware of Saha - he is primarily a wicketkeeper and only gets a chance here as a batsman because of Rohit's injury. Rohit was supposed to cover-up for Laxman but he too is down and out.

I wonder whether they ever thought about asking SMG to bat. Oh well..!

Why Saha? some of you have asked. Saha because Rohit Sharma got injured only this morning. If he had got injured yesterday, say, then some one else could have been flown in. Interestingly, even Rohit was last-minute addition to the squad as a cover for Laxman. Saha was already in the squad and there are no additional batsmen left in the original squad. What a great chance, Rohit has missed by getting injured. That's that.

Sachin: "Such irony - two debutants. Badri has been knocking the doors for at least a couple of years and Saha makes it right away due to a a series of circumstances. Is life funny or fair?"

Ashfak Abdulhakkim: "That was a good viewpoint from Andy; however what i feel, in the fielding side a captain [Dhoni] looks better and in control of the team when he is behind the stumps. especially in Tests. He can evaluate the bowler, his line of delivery, and inspire the bowler with his comments and advises."

Neerav: "Over there in Hyderabad, Yusuf Pathan has just scored a double century and won the game for West Zone, chasing the highest score in a domestic game in the country!
