Sri Lanka in India ODI Series - 4th ODI

India v Sri Lanka

India won by 7 wickets (with 36 balls remaining)

9.30am Dravid won the toss and chose to bowl. It will be a 10.00am start. Mr Alter has arrived. He shall take you through the first fifteen overs.

9.27 local time: Toss at 9.30 am and play will begin at 10.00 am.

9.01 Local time: Next inspection at 9.20am.

Umpire Simon Taufel: "There is a lot of water in the long grass on the outfield. The groundstaff are working hard. We will have another look at 9.20, see where we stand and we will hopefully get an idea of starting time."

Dew delays start Damp outfield has meant atleast 30 minutes delay. We shall keep you updated.

Sidhartha Vaidyanathan, our eagle-eyed man with glasses, gives us the dope. "A film of early-morning dew has delayed the start of the final India-Sri Lanka one-dayer by half an hour. The groundsmen were busy drying the dew on the outfield but no overs were expected to be deducted. Some showers have been forecast for the later part of the afternoon but the skies were clear as the crowds packed into the ACA-VDCA Stadium. "

Hello! and a damp welcome to you all. Another delayed start. This is Sriram Veera and, along with Jamie Alter, who was last seen going to a gym last evening, will bring you the live action today.

Ground News Again from Sid. "the ACA-VDCA Stadium [Andhra Cricket Association - Visakhapatnam District Cricket Association] is a sight to savour. The grass isn't just lush, it's sparkling; the stands have a sprinkling of freshness about them and the facilities, for players, fans and the media, are in place."

Team news Sachin Tendulkar and Munaf Patel are out, Sreesanth and Robin Uthappa are in.

AB Agarkar, wicket-keeper MS Dhoni, captain R Dravid, SC Ganguly, Harbhajan Singh, KD Karthik, Z Khan, V Sehwag, S Sreesanth, Uthappa, Yuvraj Singh

Sri Lanka team: Chamara Silva and Lasith Malinga have replaced Upul Tharanga and Kulasekara.

0.1

Khan to Atapattu, no run

0.2

Khan to Atapattu, no run, edged and....it didn't carry! Another quick, good length delivery moving across the stumps, sucked Atapattu into a prod as it slanted past him, and the edge flew fast and low to Robin Uthappa at second slip, but replays show that it hit the ground just before his fingers grasped it...Ganguly from first slip appeals vociferously to the umpires, who go upstairs and the big screen flashes that Atapattu is 'NOT-OUT'...

0.3

Khan to Atapattu, no run, good ball again! Good length pitched on leg stump and climbing, catches Atapattu going forward but that was too high over the stumps, the umpire reasons

0.5

Khan to Atapattu, 1 leg bye, strays down leg stump this time and Atapattu tries the flick, but ends up with a legbye just wide of square leg

Since the match has been reduced to 47 overs a side, two bowlers will be allowed to bowl ten overs while three others can bowl a maximum of nine. Here's Agarkar, looking to get all ten in today.

3.1

Agarkar to Atapattu, 1 run, fullish delivery just outside off stump, Atapattu comes forward in stoic defense, pinches a run

3.2

Agarkar to Jayasuriya, FOUR, shorter one this time, he's quickly into position to pull but doesnt time it perfectly, ball still runs past square leg and Ganguly gives chase, but doesnt do all that well, stopping near the ropes to watch the ball go over the ropes

3.5

Agarkar to Jayasuriya, no run, fuller this time, moving in from outside off stump, good inswinger, Jayasuriya plonks forward and gets rapped, but hit outside the line of impact, with the ball doing a bit too much, reckons umpire Taufel

3.6

Agarkar to Jayasuriya, 1 run, fuller delivery on off stump, Jayasuriya pushes it to cover and takes a quick single

End of over 4 (7 runs) Sri Lanka 15/0 (RR: 3.75)

4.3

Khan to Jayasuriya, no run, good length outside off stump, he plonks forward again and defends to the off side

Sid, our man at the pressbox, is a naughty mood. "Everyone in the press box is wondering which Sreesanth has turned up today. Going by current evidence, it's the good boy."

16.1

17.1

Khan to Dilshan, no run, Dilshan is an impatient man. Always looking to strike, to steal runs. On the middle and leg, from a length, and he tries to whip it across the line. Not just work it for a single, he tries to whip it away forecefully and is hit on the pad

Sid again. In a philosphically cheeky mood. "Pathan on as 12th man. And yes, they didn't play him here because he needed to be fit enough for the World Cup.

But again. Munaf's stiff back and Kumble slight injury hasn't helped matters. Sachin's stiff back isn't even in Vizag. And Raina back-up and RP Singh back-up have gone to play for UP."

At the end of 19th over, we only have 10 overs left from our strike bowlers and among that 5 from Sreesanth. Where are good spinners for middle overs?"

Sreesanth to Silva, 1 run, overpitched and thats a crunching drive, on the go, from Silva out to Ganguly on the deep cover ropes

39.2

Sreesanth to Maharoof, no run, overpitched again, but Maharoof cant time his version of a nice cover drive past the infield

39.3

Sreesanth to Maharoof, 1 run, back of a length this time outside off stump, he stands and looks to force it through the off side, but the inside-edges carries the ball to square leg instead

39.4

Sreesanth to Silva, 1 run, short of a length outside off stump, and with no room to cut, Silva shuffles and works it into midwicket

39.5

Sreesanth to Maharoof, 1 run, fuller this time, on a yorker length, he jams the bat down and the edge takes it down to third man

39.6

Sreesanth to Silva, 1 run, shorter outside off stump, again not enough room to cut, so he moves into position for the pull and keeps it down in front of short midwicket as the ball stood up on him

Thats it from me for a bit, so Sriram will take you through the death overs.

41.2

Agarkar to Silva, no run, Action! Fullish delivery was drilled straight down the track, it cleans up the furniture at the other end even as Maharoof dives back into the crease. Agarkard didn't get a hand on it, turns and sees one of the bails flying towards him. Catches it calmly.

41.3

Agarkar to Silva, 1 run, quick single, driven to mid-off and Silva reaches into his crease with a dive. The throw didn't hit the sticks though.

44.5

Khan to Silva, 1 run, And again, we see that magical flick of the wrist. This was outside off stump, full in length, he just leans across, and waves it behind squareleg.

44.6

Khan to Bandara, 1 run, low full toss, on the off stump line, punched down the ground, to the right of Harbhajan Singh at long off

Sreesanth will have the final fling at the Sri Lankans.

46.1

Sreesanth to Silva, 1 run, Fullish, outside off stump, Silva, again, walks across the stumps but since this one was outside off, couldn't help it to leg side, drives towards extra cover. has to settle for a single.

46.2

Sreesanth to Bandara, (no ball) 1 run, again well outside the off stump, no ball as well, Bandara stays where he is and slices it over point.

46.2

Sreesanth to Silva, (no ball) FOUR, What a knock! Brilliant 100 from Silva. 1st ODI hundred. Superb stuff. He backs away to the leg side, Sreesanth hurls across a full-toss, above the waist-high, on the leg stump line, Silva adjusts, opens the bat-face and runs it down fine through the vacant slip region. This is just his 14th ODI game and what a innings from him.

46.5

Sreesanth to Silva, FOUR, Flick of stardom! He moves right across the stumps, the ball is honing in on the middle, and he clips it to fine leg. This boy is going to be a star for Sri Lanka.

46.6

Again full but this was outside off, Silva tries to repeat his earlier stroke - that flick across the line, gets a leading edge which flies over backward point, towards short thirdman. Yuvraj Singh sets off after the ball, reaches to it but clangs it. Fabulous innings from Silva. 107 not out. Run a ball.

Silva special has meant Sri Lanka have ended up with a very healthy 259.

Charlie Austin, Cricinfo's Sri Lanka correspondent, had written on Chamara thus: "Silva, now 27, was the discovery of the year, a player who had languished in the wilderness for too long after making his one-day international debut way back in 1999. Spotted by Moody, who had by now developed a decent working relationship with Ashantha de Mel's selection committee, he looks a fine prospect. ... A real Christmas present for Sri Lanka. Showed no signs of nerves against New Zealand at the end of the year, refusing to change his naturally aggressive approach after a pair in the first Test. Helped Sangakkara rebuild the first innings in Wellington and then took centre stage in the second innings with a magnificent 152. Sri Lanka's one major area of concern in the year was the inconsistency of the middle order and Silva looks like a perfect solution."

Can't argue with that. Join Jamie Alter in a short while for the Indian chase.
