  • Overs 1-50
  • Overs 51-100
  • Overs 101-150

9.30 Right, time for some Test cricket. Gambhir to face. Thanks for your feedback, but now let's get typing the cricket. Welegedara has the ball. Big moment for him, drafted in this morning. It's his second Test. Two slips in place. Buzz in the ground. Game on!

9.15 No word as to whether any of the three absent bowlers is injured. Mendis hasn't been in top form of late in Tests so it's understandable to an extent that Herath was picked ahead of him, but to me the absence of Kulasekara and Thushara is surprising. They have been really good as a pair for Sri Lanka this year and I can't see them being sidelined for Prasad and Welegedara. If we get news as to their conditions, rest assured you'll hear about it.

To that, we get our first feedback email of the day and it's from Kapil: "Srilankan bowlers don't have that pace to rattle the Indian top order as the South Africans did 18 months back. If Viru and Gauti get pass the first hour, we would be looking in at a huge score."

Confident attitude, that. Still, it's Test cricket and you can never quite predict. Beauty of it all.

Aravind has a question: "I'm surprised Yuvraj is included in the team ahead of Badrinath considering his recent form in the first class matches. Will Badrinath ever get to play a test for India?"

Well, Yuvraj has been around for nine years and now has a chance to really cement his place in the Test side. He's not looked the complete package but he's hit a few centuries. He needs a full three-Test series to prove himself in this format. Ganguly is gone, the likes of Raina and Rohit haven't shown enough promise, a person like Badri, who hasn't got much chances in ODIs either, is still some ways behind.

Trevor: "Kapil ! When i saw Dammika Prasad he was able to bowl 145 KMph. I think he is the quickest after Lasith Malinga in Sri Lanka"

9.10 Big news: no Mendis, Kulasekara or Thushara. The attack consists of Murali, Herath, Prasad and Welegedara, with Mathews also there as the allrounder. Prasanna Jayawardene is keeping wicket.

9.00 Toss time. Dhoni spins, heads is the call, it's a tail and loud cheers all around as Dhoni opts to bat. Dhoni admits this is a big adjustment for India, who haven't played a Test since the first week of April. India will need a big mental shift, he says, and welcomes back the likes of Dravid, Laxman, and Zaheer. Team news for India is that Sreesanth and Ojha are not in, which means it's Zaheer, Ishant, Harbhajan and Mishra. The Tamil Nadu pair of Badrinath and Vijay were never expected to play. Wonder if they'll go back to Ranji now.

Sangakkara says Sri Lanka are playing Welegedara and two spinners. So that means three pacers and two slow bowlers. Confirmation of who those two spinner are will be up on your screens shortly.

8.55 SMG reckons the pitch is a bat-first one, and it does look pretty hard. Just a little bit of moisture in it.

8.45 Still 45 minutes to go for the first ball. You can while that time away with the Cricinfo's preview package. Sidharth Monga looks at what's at stake in this series, Jamie Alter previews the first Test. There are some stats for your reading pleasure as well.

8.30 Morning everyone, Test cricket returns today after two-and-a-half months of limited-overs matches. The No. 1 ICC Test ranking is up for grabs in this series as a well-balanced Sri Lanka try to improve their poor record in India. Over the past week, the sports pages have been swamped with coverage of Tendulkar completing 20 years at the international level, which has resulted in a muted build-up to the series.

0.1

Welegedara to Gambhir, 1 run, swing first up, a really full ball and it tails a bit to Gambhir who jams it out to the off side

Three slips in place for Sehwag ...

0.2

Welegedara to Sehwag, FOUR, swing again but it's a bit wider and Sehwag plants his front foot out and drives sweetly between cover and point for four first ball

0.3

Welegedara to Sehwag, 1 run, strays outside leg stump and Sehwag gets a faint tickle on that

0.4

Welegedara to Gambhir, no run, down the pads, good swing there but it's too far away

0.5

Welegedara to Gambhir, no run, full and wide, gets some shape away as Gambhir shoulders arms

0.6

Welegedara to Gambhir, no run, full and straighter this time, just tailing back in from off stump, and Gambhir thuds bat and pad forward together to block the ball out

I'm Jamie Alter, by the way, with Sanjay on scoring. Sid R will share commentary with me every hour.

End of over 1 (6 runs) India 6/0

    • G Gambhir 1 (4b)
    • V Sehwag 5 (2b 1x4)
    • UWMBCA Welegedara 1-0-6-0

Prasad takes the ball. Saw him bowl against India at the P Sara last year. Gets some pace. Busy little action. He hurried the Indians last time. Let's see what happens today.

1.1

Prasad to Sehwag, no run, full ball, angling into middle and off and Sehwag jams it out nicely

1.2

Prasad to Sehwag, FOUR, bad ball, full on the pads and he turns that into the gap at square leg

Apparently Kulasekara and Thushara have picked up niggles.

1.3

Prasad to Sehwag, no run, big shout as this one angles down toward leg stump, not too much swing on the ball as Sehwag looks to pick that up off his pads, he misses but even to the naked eye it was clear the ball was moving down last leg stump

1.4

Prasad to Sehwag, 1 run, change of pace and length, he just pulls back the length a touch and Sehwag stabs at it, getting an inside edge onto his pad and the ball balloons up safely to the on side, had a forward short leg been in that would have been a nice catch

1.5

Prasad to Gambhir, 2 byes, full outside off, very wide and swings even wider, beating the keeper as well and byes are signalled as the ball evades the two Jayawardenes

1.6

Prasad to Gambhir, no run, full on leg stump, nicely punched but mid-on dives and saves runs

Just a wee bit of help for the bowlers. Probably won't last more than a 45 minutes.

End of over 2 (7 runs) India 13/0

    • G Gambhir 1 (6b)
    • V Sehwag 10 (6b 2x4)
    • KTGD Prasad 1-0-5-0
    • UWMBCA Welegedara 1-0-6-0

Mark from Chicago: "Has UWMBCA Welegedara beaten WPUJC Vaas record in terms of Test cricketers' initials?" Good question. There was one like this posed to Steven Lynch on his Ask Steven column a couple months ago. Can't recall what the answer was.

2.1

Welegedara to Sehwag, 1 run, on the pads and turned away toward midwicket with ease

2.2

Welegedara to Gambhir, no run, better ball, uses his shoulder and gets a bit of carry off the deck, banging the ball in back of a length outside off, and Gambhir leaves it be for PJ

2.3

Welegedara to Gambhir, no run, and again, in that channel outside off, not much shape, left alone

Pretty poor turnout for this match so far. It is a Monday morning, mind you.

2.4

Welegedara to Gambhir, no run, once more he pitches on a length outside in search of swing, not too much on view this time and Gambhir leaves alone

2.5

Welegedara to Gambhir, OUT, gone! Welegedara gets Gambhir with one that shapes to swing but doesn't do as much as he expected, hence the pretty poor attempt to push it outside the line and the result is a thin inside edge onto the stumps, he was looking to dab it away to the off but didn't time it

G Gambhir b Welegedara 1 (13m 10b 0x4 0x6) SR: 10.00

Three slips for Dravid. Big blow for India.

2.6

Welegedara to Dravid, 1 run, on the pads, some swing too but he clips into the gap behind square

End of over 3 (2 runs) India 15/1

    • R Dravid 1 (1b)
    • V Sehwag 11 (7b 2x4)
    • UWMBCA Welegedara 2-0-8-1
    • KTGD Prasad 1-0-5-0
3.1

Prasad to Dravid, no run, full outside off, decent carry, Dravid gets a look-see and shoulders arms

3.2

Prasad to Dravid, no run, nice full ball, looking for swing, Dravid meets it with a pleasing punch to extra cover

3.3

Prasad to Dravid, no run, down the pads and he cannot connect with the attempted flick

3.4

Prasad to Dravid, 1 run, short of a length and angling into the ribs, Dravid tucks it nicely

3.5

Prasad to Sehwag, no run, another massive appeal from Prasad as he slants one into Sehwag, who doesn't move his feet much as he tries to turn the ball away, but it is again doing too much and is missing leg stump

3.6

Prasad to Sehwag, FOUR, shot, man! Prasad just pulls back the length outside off and Sehwag gets nice and tall and steady to steer the ball into the gap behind point for four

End of over 4 (5 runs) India 20/1

    • V Sehwag 15 (9b 3x4)
    • R Dravid 2 (5b)
    • KTGD Prasad 2-0-10-0
    • UWMBCA Welegedara 2-0-8-1
4.1

Welegedara to Dravid, no run, full and angling across Dravid with decent shape and carry and he pulls out that trademark leave ... yes, the one I watched and practiced many a time in school ... that's why I can't play a shot now in office cricket, and keep missing the ball

4.2

Welegedara to Dravid, no run, and again, shapes it across and Dravid shoulders arms

4.3

Welegedara to Dravid, no run, fuller, brings this one back in but the line is too straight and Dravid taps it to midwicket

4.4

Welegedara to Dravid, no run, good ball, pitches off and shapes back in nicely to Dravid, who picks the movement and presents a full face of the bat back to the bowler

He's bowling well, this guy ...

4.5

Welegedara to Dravid, no run, fuller in length, outside off and Dravid pads forward to shoulder arms, the ball clips his front flap en route to PJ behind the stumps

4.6

Welegedara to Dravid, no run, gets right over this one and defends stoutly to the off side

Good over, a maiden. He's getting nice subtle shape back into the batsmen.

End of over 5 (maiden) India 20/1

    • R Dravid 2 (11b)
    • V Sehwag 15 (9b 3x4)
    • UWMBCA Welegedara 3-1-8-1
    • KTGD Prasad 2-0-10-0
5.1

Prasad to Sehwag, 1 run, back of a length and he gets in line nicely, pushing it off the back foot to extra cover and calling Dravid across for the quick single

Sehwag has five previous Tests at Motera. Highest score: 29. Legend.

5.2

Prasad to Dravid, no run, swings outside the pads, Dravid misses, PJ collects

5.3

Prasad to Dravid, no run, back of a length, 142ks, good carry and Dravid leaves it be

5.4

Prasad to Dravid, 2 runs, straighter one, cuts back into Dravid who gets over it and rolls the wrists to place it into the gap behind square for a couple

He's not got as much swing as Welegedara.

5.5

Prasad to Dravid, no run, back of a length, gets back in line and defends it back

There's a short leg in place now.

5.6

Prasad to Dravid, FOUR, shot, reaches out to a full and swinging delivery and turns the wrists at the right time, pushing the ball into the gap at cover for four, good placement there

Vivek: "I wish the importance of this test match is not subsided by Sachin celebrations. Totally acknowledging the greatness of SRT, it's too overwhelming to read any Tom Dick and Harry's interviews praising Sachin. I bet the number of articles on Sachin in past 2-3 days was also a record breaking one." I could not agree more, mate. Let the game take over now.

End of over 6 (7 runs) India 27/1

    • R Dravid 8 (16b 1x4)
    • V Sehwag 16 (10b 3x4)
    • KTGD Prasad 3-0-17-0
    • UWMBCA Welegedara 3-1-8-1
6.1

Welegedara to Sehwag, OUT, long thought and then its given! Welegedara pitches it on about middle and off, 134k, just shapes it in wee bit and strikes Sehwag flush on the front pad as he gets two-thirds forward, bat just late to come down, and after taking some time to ascertain whether there was any bat on it Tony Hill raises his finger, and on replays it shows he is spot on, that was hitting middle and off

V Sehwag lbw b Welegedara 16 (31m 11b 3x4 0x6) SR: 145.45

Good ball and he's taken out the openers. He's done well. Not offered much room, got some swing. He wasn't even supposed to play today and he's gone and taken two big wickets. Here's Tendulkar to some cheer from the small crowd.

6.2

Welegedara to Tendulkar, FOUR, off the mark in style, just leaning to the pitch of a fullish ball and pushing it past cover for four, lovely foot movement and balance on that shot

6.3

Welegedara to Tendulkar, no run, back of a length, shaping across and he shoulders arms

6.4

Welegedara to Tendulkar, OUT, bowled em! Tendulkar pushes outside the line at one pitched back of a length, leaving a massive gap between bat and pad, and the ball misses the bat by not much before clipping the top of off

SR Tendulkar b Welegedara 4 (3m 3b 1x4 0x6) SR: 133.33

Dream spell from Welegedara. Three big wickets. Lovely bowling. He's got just the right amount of swing needed here to do damage. Not massive, just the right amount. Tendulkar played a poor shot that ball. Big gap between bat and pad. Pushed loosely outside the line. Laxman walks out.

6.5

Welegedara to Laxman, no run, fuller ball, middle and off, good shape back in and defended to leg

6.6

Welegedara to Laxman, no run, back of a length outside off and defended to the off side

End of over 7 (4 runs) India 31/3

    • VVS Laxman 0 (2b)
    • R Dravid 8 (16b 1x4)
    • UWMBCA Welegedara 4-1-12-3
    • KTGD Prasad 3-0-17-0
7.1

Prasad to Dravid, no run, middle and leg, slants back in, defended back nicely

7.2

Prasad to Dravid, 1 run, back of a length, slants into middle and leg, 141ks, nicely turned to the leg side

7.3

Prasad to Laxman, no run, back of a length, middle and off, stays low but he gets bat on it nicely

7.4

Prasad to Laxman, OUT, another one goes! Prasad now! Laxman perishes to a gentle off cutter outside off, doesn't move his feet as he pushes at the ball away from the body and he gets an inside edge onto leg stump, which goes cartwheeling some distance, that's what you get for playing poorly

VVS Laxman b Prasad 0 (6m 4b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

Prasad kept the ball up and cut it back in ever so slightly. Laxman got confident and played away from the body. India are four down. Another 76 all out in Motera?

7.5

Prasad to Yuvraj Singh, no run, loose shot from Yuvraj, who feels for one angling across and gets an edge down into the ground wide of gully

7.6

Prasad to Yuvraj Singh, no run, fuller now, 143ks, shapes back into middle and off and he pushes it back with a straight bat to Prasad

This has been a terrific start. Prasad has been quick, without much swing. Welegedara has gotten the ball to dart about a bit. But most impressive has been the lengths they have bowled and the fact that they have made the batsmen play a lot.

End of over 8 (1 run) India 32/4

    • Yuvraj Singh 0 (2b)
    • R Dravid 9 (18b 1x4)
    • KTGD Prasad 4-0-18-1

8.1

Welegedara to Dravid, FOUR, well played, gets across and clips the swinging ball from middle and leg into the gap at midwicket

8.3

Welegedara to Dravid, no run, shapes it away from off stump and Dravid shoulders arms

Mark Taylor from South Korea: "I've said it before and I'll say it again. There is a real lack of decent swing bowling in cricket world-wide. So much so in fact that the second someone with half a bit of ability comes along, every so called 'world class bastmen' is unable to cope. This happened in the Ashes in 2005, and to a much lesser extent in 2009. It is happening again now. Batsmen are too used to planting their front legs forward and swinging through the line. 32/4 and it is only going to get worse."

8.4

Welegedara to Dravid, no run, well bowled, 134ks, swinging into the blockhole and Dravid clears his toes before jamming the bat down, well jammed out in the end

8.5

Welegedara to Dravid, no run, another full ball, the attempted yorker on off stump, Dravid pushes a very straight drive back but Welegedara reacts superbly and saves four, very athletic effort

8.6

Welegedara to Dravid, 2 runs, pitches just outside leg and he goes back to work the ball wide of square leg, good placement and good running gets him a couple

Mohammed Nijas: "Sri Lankans took the lesson from the Aussies. They are resting their experienced bowlers and trying their new ones. They have learned about India's inability to tackle the unexpected and see how it has worked!!!Aussies understood it first and rested all their precious bowlers and see how they won the series!"

    • R Dravid 15 (24b 2x4)
    • Yuvraj Singh 0 (2b)

9.3

Prasad to Yuvraj Singh, FOUR, short of a length this time and Yuvraj feels for it, lucky to get a thick outside edge between gully and point for four, just pushes at it too hard

9.4

Prasad to Yuvraj Singh, no run, gets in line better this time and defends it back watchfully

ArunkR: "Gun me down: for saying this. Sachin and landmarks don't really gel well do they ? Walking for the test match on the eve of his 20th yr in international ckt, gets bowled by a new comer for nothing. Nostalgia. His 100th Test."

9.5

Prasad to Yuvraj Singh, FOUR, overpitched outside off stump and he drives effortlessly past cover for four, high elbow et al, a carbon copy of the shot he played just as India sealed that 2003 World Cup game over Pakistan

9.6

Prasad to Yuvraj Singh, 1 run, straighter ball which he works away to the leg side

Big test this for Yuvraj. He has plenty of time to bat here. And a legend at the other end for support.

10.3

Welegedara to Yuvraj Singh, no run, now he goes full outside off and Yuvraj shoulders arms

10.4

Welegedara to Yuvraj Singh, no run, good ball, not as wide this time, shapes in a wee bit, Yuvraj hurries to bring the bat down on the ball and runs it to backward point

10.5

Welegedara to Yuvraj Singh, no run, good ball again, 135ks, on the seam, off stump, starts to wobble and Yuvraj gets over it in watchful defense

10.6

Welegedara to Yuvraj Singh, no run, much wider, lots of swing, left alone for PJ

Its drinks on the fields, and my cue to hand over to Sid R till lunch. Bye for now.

Muralitharan to Yuvraj Singh, no run, Murali starts with a maiden, the last ball of the over is pushed towards mid-on

That brings to an end a gripping first session. Sri Lanka lost the toss and the services of their senior fast bowlers, Kulasekara and Thushara, to niggles but that didn't stop them from ripping through the Indian top order. Chanaka Welegedara, in only his second Test, nipped out the openers and also Sachin Tendulkar. Dammika Prasad added the scalp of VVS Laxman to leave India at 32 for 4 but an uncharacteristically aggressive Rahul Dravid and a solid Yuvraj Singh fought back with an unbroken 73-run stand. I gotta tell you, I love Tests.

The wonderfully named Dinolyn has done some analysis on the Sri Lanlkan bowlers' names: "Welegedara also beats WPUJC Vaas's name, who had 52 characters in it. Welegedara has 55 characters."

Jamie Alter will be around at 12.10 to describe the post-lunch session.

Muralitharan to Yuvraj Singh, OUT, what's this, he's gone! Yuvraj comes out of his crease, looking to drive past extra cover, but is beaten in the slow loopy flight and stabs at the ball with bat and pad and gets a faint inside edge that pops up straight to the man at cover, so simple

Yuvraj Singh c Dilshan b Muralitharan 68 (129m 93b 13x4 0x6) SR: 73.11

I didn't see that one coming. Perhaps the aggression got to him. Maybe not. He was just deceived in flight. Didn't play it with tight technique either, just sort of pushed at it while on the move. A soft dismissal, as they say. End of a good innings and a century stand. Dravid is well set and now joined by Dhoni. That's a wicket much needed for Sri Lanka, who look pretty relieved. Change of angles for Murali now.
