Sri Lanka in India Test Series - 2nd Test

India v Sri Lanka

India won by an innings and 144 runs

Overs 1-50  | Overs 51-100  | Overs 101-150  | Overs 151-200

We are ready for the start. Gambhir will take strike against Welegedara. Three slips in place.

Rakesh: "this is a surprise tactic by Sanga by playing three frontline spinners, i think its a good move because Mathews can move the ball both ways, but what has happened to our Dhoni, why is he playing Ojha, i think mishra is not handled well by Dhoni, it would have been fair if he was given an other chance, remember against Australia in the test series he was a match winner in the absence of the great Kumble. lets see what magic can ojha weave around the best batters of spin."

Ari: "Hey dont forget that England taking south africa. All top 8 teams are in fight." Thanks for reminding us.

9.25am There's another game underway in Dunedin, New Zealand appear to have done reasonably well against Pakistan. West Indies take on Australia on Thursday; with three games happening simultaneously, we are toast but that's what we're here for.

9.15am We are around 15 minutes from the start. There's much to check out before then, and during he course of the game. Sriram Veera, who's the bully for this game (writing he bulletin), gives us the preview. How might the pitch play, this piece gives us some ideas. It's Amit Mishra's birthday today, and he's been asked to sit out. Bad timing.

Sandy, in the meantime, has this gem: "Sreesanth will be dancing around for the first half hour.. who knows, maybe the ball will do something too??" In the dressing room you mean, it's India batting first.

9.07am Hi everyone. We're in together for a couple of sessions before my namesake Sid (Ravindran) joins in. Three spinners should be quite a treat and the pitch here is expected to be "more bowler friendly", in the words of the curator. But anything would be bowler friendly compared to that dead dud in Ahmedabad.

Toss, 9.00 am: The toss is minutes away but I've been told that Ishant Sharma isn't likely to play for India, which means Sreesanth could make his comeback. It isn't confirmed yet though, it will be soon.

MS Dhoni's won the toss and says India will bat. He expects the ball to move around early on but is more wary of what the pitch could do on the final day, so he doesn't want to bat last. Two changes, Sreesanth replaces Ishant, and Ojha's come in for Mishra, and it's his birthday today.

Sri Lanka are playing three spinners, Mendis replaces Prasad. Both my predictions were wrong, and on that note maybe it's better I hand over the commentary to Siddhartha Talya.

8.50 am: Good morning and welcome to Cricinfo's coverage of the second Test between India and Sri Lanka in Kanpur. Siddhartha Talya and Siddharth Ravindran will be your commentators for the day but I'm (George Binoy) just filling in until Talya wakes up.

The Ahmedabad snooze fest is best forgotten so here's hoping that Kanpur will provide more entertainment. The Green Park pitch, after the terrible one at Motera, has been the topic of much discussion and until a day ago it was covered with a healthy sheet of grass. That, however, is likely to be mown off on match morning and both MS Dhoni and Kumar Sangakkara felt the surface would be dry underneath.

India are likely to go in unchanged, unless there were unforeseen developments overnight. Sri Lanka, on the other hand, have to choose a replacement for Dammika Prasad, who did his hammy. I can't imagine they'd play Angelo Mathews as a frontline fast bowler so my gut feeling is that Dilhara Fernando will play ahead of the third spinner. Which leaves Sangakkara and Co with another decision, to choose between Herath and Mendis.

Early bird emailer: "Hi George, how about weather forecast? Any fog? Will match start on time?" asks Karthik. Seems OK Karthik, the toss is moments away.

0.1

Welegedara to Gambhir, 1 run, Gambhir's off the mark, swinging away from him, bowled full outside off, just tapped it in front of cover and raced off, third consecutive first-ball single for Gambhir in this series

Welegedara charges in but Sehwag backs off, some problem with the sight-screen. There's already a deep point in place

0.2

Welegedara to Sehwag, no run, short of a good length outside off, leaving the right hander, leaves it be

0.3

Welegedara to Sehwag, no run, a touch fuller this time, in the channel outside off, shoulders arms to it

Two slips and a gully

0.4

Welegedara to Sehwag, 1 run, dropped, chasing a wide one, tries to play it through the covers, gets a thick edge as it moves away a hint, Prasanna Jayawardene dives full length to his right, can't reach it but there's Mahela Jayawardene at slip who spills it after the keeper blocks his view

A straightforward chance but made more difficult by Prasanna's attempt

0.5

Welegedara to Gambhir, no run

0.6

Welegedara to Gambhir, 3 runs, three to the score, bowling it shortish on hos body and Gambhir just clips it away through square leg

How costly will that prove. Prasanna, widely regarded as among the best keepers in the world, judged that one badly. It was heading straight to slip and he dived needlessly

End of over 1 (5 runs) India 5/0
G Gambhir    4* (3b)      UWMBCA Welegedara    1-0-5-0
V Sehwag    1* (3b)

Angelo Mathews will share the new ball

Srinivasan: "While the selection of Sreesanth in the playing squad was baffling, selecting him in the playing eleven is even more eerie! Lets see what he does in this match. Nehra is given a raw deal!!"

1.1

Mathews to Gambhir, no run, bowling it full on the off, trying to bring it into the batsman, defended to mid-off

1.2

Mathews to Gambhir, no run, in the channel outside off, holding back his length just a touch, Gambhir prods forward and shoulders arms

1.3

Mathews to Gambhir, no run, straight on middle, appeared to hold its line, at 135 kmph, kept a little low, turned away to square leg

1.4

Mathews to Gambhir, no run, bowled it full on the off, gets to the pitch and defends it towards cover

Standing outside the crease is Gambhir

1.5

Mathews to Gambhir, 1 run, some late movement into the batsman there, taken a little by surprise is the left-hander, closes the face at the last moment and clips it uppishly behind square

Bas: "Was expecting a third consecutive first ball FOUR from Sehwag and disappointed :)"

1.6

Mathews to Sehwag, no run, Sehwag restrains himself, bowled shortish outside off, just a hint of away movement, lets it pass

End of over 2 (1 run) India 6/0

G Gambhir    5* (8b)      UWMBCA Welegedara    1-0-5-0

2.1

Welegedara to Gambhir, FOUR, angling it in towards middle, some late movement again, squared him up a little, tried to play forward, it takes a thick outside edge between the slips and gully to the boundary

2.2

Welegedara to Gambhir, no run, in the corridor, trying to induce him into playing the drive, Gambhir isn't bothered

Sid: "@Rakesh - I think Srilankans have read mishra very well and it would have been a difficult decision for dhoni. Ojha, with his uncertainity could do something ;)"

2.3

Welegedara to Gambhir, 1 run, through that gap again but there's a third man in place now, a squarish one, opens the face and guides it wide of the diving slip

2.4

Welegedara to Sehwag, no run, short of a good length on middle, Sehwag gets his body behind it and defends it solidly back to the bowler

2.5

Welegedara to Sehwag, no run, testing line outside off, Sehwag is only half-forward and knocks it back to the bowler

2.6

Aakash: "Though there was some grass cover on the pitch at Green Park, it was the obvious decision to make as the surface had a few cracks that the experts reckoned would widen and break up. The spinners are expected to come into play but the seamers too can be among the wickets on this surface with variable bounce. Decision to play Sreesanth by MS Dhoni will come handy...."

A change of bats for Sehwag.

3.1

Mathews to Sehwag, no run, keeping a little low here, indications of a slowish track this, shortish on the off, Sehwag waits for it and crunches it towards extra cover

3.2

Mathews to Sehwag, no run, beaten this time, driving length just a fraction outside off, gets forward to defend it into the off side and it zips away to just escape the outside edge

3.4

Mathews to Sehwag, no run, held its line this time, bowled from slightly wide of the crease and angling in towards off, gets forward and shoulders arms, missed off but just about

3.5

Mathews to Sehwag, no run, left alone again, much wider this time, gets it to leave the right hander, shaping up to drive that but ends up leaving it be, the drop catch appears to have had its impact

3.6

Mathews to Sehwag, no run, nipped back in from a good length on the off, taking Sehwag by surprise and knocking him high on the pads as he tried to fend it away

End of over 4 (maiden) India 12/0

G Gambhir    10* (11b 1x4)      UWMBCA Welegedara    2-0-11-0

4.1

Welegedara to Gambhir, no run, a touch too wide there, Gambhir doesn't bother chasing it, he's getting some away movement but needs to get much closer to the stumps

4.2

Welegedara to Gambhir, no run, just like that, draws him forward but Gambhir is equal to the task, presenting the full face while defending it to extra cover

4.3

Welegedara to Gambhir, no run, short of a good length outside off, keeps a little low there, Gambhir lets it be

4.4

Welegedara to Gambhir, no run, bangs it in, short on the off and Gambhir backs away but he would have wanted it to bounce more, the bowler

Sundeep: "Your commentary: "taken a little by surprise is the left-hander" , "Standing outside the crease is Gambhir" reminds me of how Yoda speaks in "Star Wars". hope you do not mind this complement :)" Not at all.

4.5

Welegedara to Gambhir, no run, shortish outside off, chops it down towards a deepish point who cuts off the single, more a flying point, just like you have a flying slip

4.6

Welegedara to Gambhir, FOUR, gets it wide of him this time, deliberately done, short of a good length outside off, opens the face at the right time to get it behind slip and the point fielder for a boundary

End of over 5 (4 runs) India 16/0
G Gambhir    14* (17b 2x4)      UWMBCA Welegedara    3-0-15-0

5.1

Mathews to Sehwag, no run, gets to the keeper on the second bounce, shortish outside off, keeps low

5.2

Mathews to Sehwag, no run, appeal for lbw, not upheld, angled in towards middle and leg from wide of the crease, didn't straighten, struck Sehwag on the pads as he tried to play it on the leg side, didn't move his feet much, would have been sliding down, hawkeye shows it would have clipped the outside of leg

5.3

Mathews to Sehwag, no run, shaping away from the right hander, Sehwag is tempted to chase it but resists at the last moemnt, leaving it alone

5.4

Mathews to Sehwag, no run, full outside off, goes for the drive but mistimes it to mid-on

5.5

Mathews to Sehwag, no run, driving length again, Sehwag doesn't want to fish for it, it was there to play but he opted to let it go, seeing it move away from him

6.3

Welegedara to Gambhir, no run, fullish on the off, defended with bat close to pads towards extra cover, solidly done

6.4

Welegedara to Gambhir, FOUR, nicely done, pitched it up, a touch wide and Gambhir had to reach for it but he had no trouble easing it through the covers, just a firm push and it raced away

6.5

Welegedara to Gambhir, no run, hurling it short on leg stump, moved back in to strike him on the thighs as he tried to work it square

6.6

Welegedara to Gambhir, no run, strikes him on the pads as he comes forward to defend, a stifled appeal, it moved in from outside off but caught him outside the line

An unusually quiet start from Sehwag who was given a reprieve when he was still to get off the mark. Gambhir, on the other hand, has looked quite fluent. Pleasant weather in Kanpur, the ground far from full-capacity at this point. Still early days

Welegedara to Sehwag, no run, loud appeal for lbw as Welegedara brings the ball back into Sehwag and hits him on the pad, was it bat or pad first? Close call. It was very similar to his first-innings dismissal in Ahmedabad, think it was pad first this time too

Ganesh: "Sehwag has a weakness against incoming ball when pitched at a length where he is cramped for room, which most of the pace bowlers are exploiting. Why is he or his coach not working on it?"

Shobhit: "Taking a cue from the Wigan players who have decided to refund the expenses of all the fans who travelled to witness the mauling at Spurs, heard the Motera curator is following suit by offering to reimburse the broadband bills of all Cricinfo followers." You wish.

The umpires think the ball has gone out of shape and are considering a change. Meanwhile, the players enjoy drinks.

Vishal: "@ Ganesh... Are you forgetting Sehwags prowess at the hip and the leg glance... he is having trouble here because he has committed himself to the front foot for this pitch..."

Just so you guys know, Sehwag's lowest strike-rate for a score of above 50 is 57.77. Check it out.

Vijayanand: "This is the problem with all of us. Once Sehwag is playing sedatly and trying to negotiate the swinging ball quitly, we start to question his technique and talk about the weakness. I wonder if there is batsman for whome we can say "He plays better in swinging condition than flat tracks".

It's that golden period that most good bowlers have at the start of their careers... It's what they do after that phase is what defines them. Ishant falls in to the same category."

Timbolopolis: "I think Sri Lanka would do well to give Ajantha Mendis a spell at around the 30 over mark - he seems to adapt remarkably well on pitches that seem poor for spinners. To continue the 'Yoda tradition' that seems to be forming, "Argue with his record, one cannot"."

We have time for one more over before lunch

25.1

Mendis to Sehwag, SIX, Typical Sehwag, doesn't care what stage of the day it is, if it's there to hit he goes for it, audacious shot that, backed himself to clear long-on and did, full, tossed up on the off and he cleared that fielder, who was in a few paces, with one clean swing of the bat

25.3

25.6

Mendis to Gambhir, 1 run, tossed it up on the off, drives it inside out wide of mid-off for a single to cap off India's session

So, that drop did prove costly. Sehwag took full toll and shrugged off the early scratchy phase to return to his normal ways. He's outscored Gambhir who was ahead of him by a fair distance. The seamers did extract movement and the bounce was uneven but were, for the most part, well negotiated. The spinners were dominated; the three have been taken for 73 in nine overs, Mendis coming in for the harshest treatment. There is turn but the openers have read that without any difficulty; the variations have been few, the slowness has helped make them more predictable. India have an excellent launching pad for a substantial score here, join us in about 35 minutes for the second session.

Circe: "Should we say "The Magic Finger" has been decoded? Has the sorcery of the carom ball been exorcised?"

Dee: "The ball Sehwag hit over long on right before lunch, Dravid would have patted back to the bowler. Dravid, Laxman and Tendulkar are more likely to be becalmed - allowing Mendis to get into some rhythm. I'll wait till their innings to pass a verdict on Mendis being decoded."

26.1

26.6

Welegedara to Sehwag, (no ball) FOUR, driven through the line, lands on a good length just outside off and he strikes it with a straight bat towards mid-off, Herath, sliding to his right, makes a complete mess allowing it through to the ropes, what's worse, it's a no-ball

26.6

Welegedara to Sehwag, no run, bowled it full on the off, driven firmly but straight to mid-off, Herath would have to be an absolutely abysmal fielder to miss this one but he didn't

Ashwath: "I think youre right sehwag will be the key to playing mendis. dravid seemed to go into his shell when he played him last year but being in better form this time around will probably see him negotiate mendis with a lot more confidence. Yuvraj will have a tough time playing mendis. i just keeep remembering the ball he got in the asia cup final."

30.1

Welegedara to Gambhir, 1 run, shortish on the off, drops it wide of the keeper with soft hands and sneaks a single

Shrinagesh: "Some comments here say that a particular batsman will not be able to handle a particular bowler, because he got out to him in a match. In cricket, batsman often show improvements in dealing with a bowler while that was not the case often with a bowler. The bowler's improvement quotient is far less than that of a batsman's."

Dinesh: "Shrinagesh says: "The bowler's improvement quotient is far less than that of a batsman's."

Is that why certain bowlers have bunnies? Too much of an overreaching statement that. While a bowler may be limited to say 8 types of deliveries, the number of appropriate shots that may be played to certain deliveries are also finite. It boils down to whoever follows their script better on that particular day. That said, Yuvi will have trouble playing Mendis until he starts reading him from the hand, something that he has apparently been unable to do until now. "

V Sehwag c Dilshan b Muralitharan 131 (181m 122b 18x4 2x6) SR: 107.37

He was in for a much bigger score here but the Sri Lankans have finally struck. Some consolation after dropping him on zero. But the pitch is a great one to bat on and the batsmen to follow have a solid platform to build on.

And here is a Numbers Game column that was done on the pair in October last year.
