West Indies tour of India, 2006/07 / Commentary

Hi and welcome to the final one-dayer between India and West Indies. I am Sriram Veera and will be bringing you the action today.

Pitch news There is a layer of fresh green grass, in patches, on the track. It has been raining last couple of days. Obviously there should be bit of moisture on it but the experts reckon it will take spin later on.

Toss Lara has chosen to bowl first. "I think the fast bowlers could get something from this track."

Team news Dwayne Bravo is out due to injury, while Jerome Taylor has been rested and Runako Morton is dropped. Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Ian Bradshaw and Dwayne Smith are the replacements.

oh ho! It will be Dwayne Smith who will open the bowling. He did pretty well against India when opening in the DLF cup in Malaysia.

1.1

DR Smith to Ganguly, no run, Just outside the off stump, full in length, nurdled to point

1.4

DR Smith to Uthappa, no run, ooh...almost dragged back to the stumps. It lands outside off stump, comes in a touch, Uthappa stabs at it and gets a inside edge

The series is in the balance as the teams walk out at Vadodara. Opinion is split over how India should tackle these matches: Some feel they should try to win at any cost and so field its strongest team, others feel the smaller victories - an opening combination that clicks, a middle-order bat who scores, a bowler who fits into the attack - are crucial in the longer run. What's your take on this?Win now or set things up for a win down the line?

1.5

DR Smith to Uthappa, no run, Huge huge shout for lbw. Looked pretty close. Fullish, on the middle stump line, Uthappa goes across the line and is rapped in front of the middle. Should have taken out middle and leg. Looked like dead duck but the umpire Saheba doesn't think so. But hold on.... Virtual replay suggests that the ball would have missed leg stump!

Dasa is all praise for the slow men. " For west Indies, Gale and Samuels seem to be the most effective bowlers.Even indians, who are supposed to be good playes of spin hav been held back by these two spinners time and again. I wonder why Gale is not counted in world's best all-rounders."

Sophie Petkar is curious. "I have always wondered that when a cricketer hits a six and the ball goes flying way out of the stadium, do they wait and hold up play until the ball is found, or do they get a different ball? What happens if the ball gets stuck in the roof etc? Its a burning question... ps. I work for BskyB in the UK, for Sky News London, so I am having a great time watching the match and working the 12hr nightshift!"

They usually do wait for the ball to be returned. If it has flown over the cuckoo's nest, outside the stadium, they usually get another one but on the roof , they wait. Misers I tell you! Actually its difficult to get another ball with the same condition and so if you can get it back quickly, might as well do so.

Vijay is getting a bit impatient. "The idea of boosting middle-overs performance through the Sachin-Dravid firm seems to be backfiring. The pair has consistently been getting bogged down ever since the Capetown test. They scuttled the initiative in Chennai and have switched to 2nd gear now in Vadodara"

Adi has a response to Vijay. " I think both Dravid & Tendulkar are a bit wary about last match where India lost all 6 wickets in the end for 30+ runs after Tendulkar & Dravid departed. Another thumbs up for SRT-Dravid combo. From Umesh. " feel is they are and were right in last match as well going at 4-5 runs per over without taking no risks till Dravid tried to accelerate bit early. They should wait till about 37-38 overs and then up the tempo. Even if they don't succeed in scoring at that stage, likes of Yuvraj and Dhoni would get enough time to settle down and hammer home the advantage after 40 overs. The key is to keep run rate at between 4-5 in middle overs and still keep wickets intact. And the way Sachin is milking the bowlers, I'm hoping he stays there till the end. That should be a treat."

45.6

Samuels to Dhoni, FOUR, Drama! Dhoni whips, a bottom-handed twirl of the bat, a fullish delivery high to deep midwicket. Dwayne smith jumps near the ropes and palms it inside the boundary. That was great but while trying to pick the ball up, he ends up flicking it past the ropes! In the end he saved two runs. 4 and not a 6.

End of over 46 (9 runs) India 286/3 (RR: 6.21)

Samuels to Dhoni, 1 run, waist-high full toss, quickish, pulled to long leg

47.3

Samuels to Tendulkar, 1 run, slower, on the off side, Tendulkar rotates the strike back to Dhoni with a push to cover point

Camera pans to Samuels. No reaction from Mr Cool as he waits at the top of the bowling mark. Reminds me of Carl Hooper. Nonchalant while batting or bowling

47.4

Samuels to Dhoni, 1 run, on the middle and leg, shovelled to fine leg

47.5

Samuels to Tendulkar, SIX, Now Tendulkar joins in the fun. Brings back memories of him slog-sweeping Warne and offspinners in his hey day. Goes down on his knee and the white ball soars over deep midwicket. Up UP and over!

48.1

Emrit to Tendulkar, 1 run, Tendulkar goes for a paddle sweep , fetches it from outside off, places it to short fine leg

48.2

Emrit to Dhoni, SIX, That bottom-handed twirl again. A classic You Tube moment. Full and right in the slot, the wrists works over time, the bat goes under the ball and sends it flying over long-on. Quite an amazing shot.

48.3

Emrit to Dhoni, 2 runs, fullish, outside off, carved away to right of deep cover.

48.4

Emrit to Dhoni, 1 run, If Lara had hit, Dhoni would have been a goner. Dhoni charged out, and drilled a fullish delivery to Lara at cover who makes a pretty good stop- that ball was travelling at the speed of light and fires in a throw at non-striker's end, Dhoni had given up but ....

48.5

last over coming up. Can India reach 350. Bradshaw to bowl.

49.1

Bradshaw to Dhoni, 1 run, in the block hole, outside off stump, Dhoni tries to produce his special shot but only ends up squeezing it down the ground. Didn't get the length to get under the ball.

Tendulkar is on 89. Dhoni on a whirlwind 40. Tendulkar, as ever, makes some adjustments to the sightscreen.

49.2

Bradshaw to Tendulkar, 2 runs, backs away to the leg side, Bradshaw follows him and he scoops it inside out, over cover for 2 runs.

49.3

Bradshaw to Tendulkar, FOUR, Dwayne Smith drops another dolly. Second life for Sachin. A fullish ball on the legs was whipped away, in the air, to long leg where Smith had all the time to take the catch. Ends up palming it to the boundary.

49.4

Bradshaw to Tendulkar, 2 runs, overpitched on the middle and leg, whipped, along the ground, to long leg. On 97 now.

Tendulkar goes across to have a chat with Dhoni. Must be just to take some breather. No he seems to be discussing something earnestly.

49.5

Bradshaw to Tendulkar, 1 wide, Wide down the leg side. Bradshaw, from round the stumps, anticpates that Tendulkar might move down the leg side and fires one there but ends up pushing too much down

49.5

Bradshaw to Tendulkar, 2 runs, Tendulkar reaches 99. A slower ball on the stumps was lofted towards long-off. Dhoni set off like a mad bull and turned blind.

49.6

Bradshaw to Tendulkar, 1 run, Tendulkar reaches his 41st ton with a tickle to midwicket. It was full and going down leg side - it would have been called a wide, Tendulkar reaches out for it and edges it to midwicket.

So the frenetic slog-over hitting has meant India have reached a massive 341. 107 runs flowed in the last 10 with the Indians looting 64 runs in the last 5 overs. Dhoni and Tendulkar biffed 75 in 39 balls. Interesting stat 2003 TVS Cup against New Zealand in Hyderabad was the last time India won when Tendulkar scored a hundred. His next four hundreds have been in lost causes. Overall, 28 of his 40 hundreds have come in Indian wins.
