Wisden obituary
Owen Hughes, who died last summer, aged 82, had a singularly hard fate. For years, whenever a discussion arose as to who had had the worst Varsity match on record, he was sure to be on the short list and was usually top of it. Yet on previous performance his Blue was justified. Coming into the Cambridge side in 1910 three weeks before the match, he started with 52 against Yorkshire and followed this with 65 against Sussex and 33 against a so-called Gentlemen of England's XI. Moreover he was a good slip. But at Lord's he began by dropping Le Couteur, who made 160, four times, the first when he had scored 42. Understandably he was desperately nervous when he came in to bat, and he received only four balls in the two innings, though a single in the second innings saved him from a `pair'. He is probably an example of the risk entailed in picking an inexperienced player for a big occasion, and the Varsity match was then a very big occasion indeed. At Malvern he had been two years in the XI, but had not been regarded as outstanding, and at Cambridge his only trial had been in the Freshmen's match in 1909; so his experience had been confined to four first-class matches.
