Matt Carter marked his first-class debut for Nottinghamshire with 7 for 56 in 16 overs against Somerset on a responsive pitch in Taunton. Bowling his offspinners from a tall classical action with flight, bite and composure, he returned the best figures by a spin bowler on Championship debut since Leicestershire's Jack Walsh claimed 7 for 46 against Northamptonshire in 1938.

Carter, brother of Andy Carter, a seam bowler who was also on the Trent Bridge staff at the time, had three more opportunities in 2016, but this time there was less to celebrate as his three Championship wickets cost more than 100 runs apiece. The following season he made only one appearance, but his four wickets in the final Championship match of the season, against Sussex at Hove, at least meant he could share in promotion celebrations. He accepted a new one-year contract, hoping for more opportunities.
