Tom Moody, the former Sri Lanka coach and Australia allrounder, has been appointed coach of the Hyderabad IPL franchise, which was bought over by the Sun TV network in October. Former national selection chief Kris Srikkanth will be its mentor and VVS Laxman its mentor-ambassador.

The team's logo was also unveiled at a ceremony in Hyderabad, held two days after the franchise was christened Hyderabad Sunrisers. While both Moody and Srikkanth, the Chennai Super Kings brand ambassador for the first three IPL seasons, were in attendance, Laxman skipped it due to the death of a close relative.

"This is a proud moment for us as we unveil our new name and logo and we are sure that the team will be successful in the forthcoming season of IPL 2013," Moody said. "We are keenly looking forward to it and our game will stand testimony to the competition we will give to other teams."

Moody has plenty of coaching experience. He was in charge of the Sri Lankan national team for two years culminating in their run to the World Cup final in 2007, and also oversaw Kings XI Punjab in the first two seasons of the IPL. He has also had coaching stints at Worcestershire and his home state of Western Australia. Moody worked closely with Kumar Sangakkara, who is expected to lead Sunrisers in the next IPL season, during his time at Sri Lanka and Kings XI.

The team also includes Dale Steyn, the premier fast bowler, and Srikkanth believes that with the current core group and few additions before the the next season, Sunrisers would be able to regroup.

"We are very keen on [Ambati] Rayudu. He is a brilliant cricketer. He has been in the 'A' team for the last two years," Srikkanth said. "If he comes into auction, it is very good. Same with the case of Dwayne Smith, who is released by Pune Warrior. The Pakistan players may come into auction. Indian cricketers who made their debut, will come into auction. We know what kind of combination we need for the new season. We want couple of good all-rounders.''

List of 20 players retained by Sunrisers: Indian: Abhishek Jhunjunwala, Akash Bhandari, Akshath Reddy, Amit Mishra, Anand Rajan, Ankit Sharma, Bharat Chipli, Biplab Samantray, Shikhar Dhawan, Veer Pratap Singh, Parthiv Patel, Ashish Reddy, DB Ravi Teja, Ishant Sharma.

Foreign players: Kumar Sangakkara (capt), Cameron White, Dale Steyn, Chris Lynn, Jean-Paul Duminy, Juan Theron.

to clarify everyone Rayudu would be in auctions if he plays for India ...as all the players who have represented India should go through auction

Nice idea by the Sun TV , but surely we will all miss Deccan Chargers ...:( Anyways Hyderabadi's .......Let's cheer'em up

The logo is nice, but it looks like one of the popular football club 'MANCHESTER CITY' The name is also belongs to the symbol of D.M.K. This time it looks much better hope Hyderabad perform well in the upcoming IPL-VI

I am decaan fan (and laxman fan) but i wont support these IPL leagues at the cost of national team's performance in test matches. Look at the domestic players quality. There should be some criteria that batsmen should have an average of atleast 40 in Ranji matches to play in IPL.Other wise we would keep inventing players like jadeja, m vijay , sharmas, tiwaries who are only IPL quality.

The logo is very nice. It suites with Sun Network as well as the Hyderabad team. The Phoenix bird symbolically means the reborn of Hyderabad team (like arising from the ashes) which was almost dead when Deccan put it on sale. Also it represents the relation with Sun. It makes the name "Sunrisers" meaningful. And of course it informally represents the political party DMK's election symbol, the Rising Sun. Note: Sun network chief Kalanithi Maran is son of former DMK minister Murasoli Maran who is nephew of DMK leader Karunanithi.

Why the name of Rayudu came out ? he is not among the players released by MI. We(Telugu) are still proud to produce a batsman like him but can understand his situation in shifting to other franchise or Ranji team.

He will be the man that could bring some crowd with flags to Uppal stadium and surely if he plays for Sunrisers, he could be seen as an icon player for that team.

Well, Hyderabad have plenty of Indian players to choose from.. I think they should target T20 specialists like Venugopal Rao and Abhishek Nayar in the auction. Rao in particular can be a huge asset to the team and he'll know the home conditions better than others. They also need to rope in a good all-rounder like Jalaj Saxena or Baba Aparajith and a good pace bowler, say Sandeep Sharma or Pankaj Singh or Unadkat. After that, remove Sangakkara from the team and you have a decent chance of winning the title. Here's the team - DHAWAN, PARTHIV (wk), AKSHATH, WHITE (c), RAO, DUMINY, SAXENA, MISHRA, STEYN, THERON, ISHANT..

Bring back the DADA into the team. . .

The big question is why Deccan sell Pietersen and Ojha to Delhi and Mumbai resp. last year,if any team is selling there top players it is surely going to hurt the team combination and subsequently the outcome of the result. Delhi is crowded with lot of opening batsmen with Sehwag and Chand from India and Warner and Jayawardhene as foreigner, so one from Warner or Jaya should go to Hyd. So the playing Xi will be good and Jaya can captain. Dhawan, Jayawardhene(Should buy), Akshath Reddy, Duminy, Smith, Parthiv Patel, Ashish Reddy, Steyn, Mishra, Ishant, Anand Ranjan.

Srikanth - It is not Dwayne Smith it is Steven Smith from Pune and Rayudu is not released by MI y would he be in Auctions...moment u started to make comments against Dhoni i knew u will join this team...anyways god save sunraisers

Moody is good choice. However, srikanth as mentor? what sort of mentoring will he do? maybe teach players how to talk without making sense?

His lack of knowledge already shows : he is talking about Dwayne smith released from pune but he is already paying for Mumbai.

Great name for the team, probably the most original of all IPL teams so far after Rajasthan Royals, well done! I am not sure about Laxman being a mentor though. Laxman was a top-class Test player, however his T20 record is poor, leading to him being dumped by even Deccan Chargers repeatedly. Srikannth mentor and Laxman ambassador would have been more realsitic.

Posted by   on (December 20, 2012, 20:49 GMT)

Great decision by including Laxman as Mentor.. get local support.. Hyderabad name on Logo is another gr8 move... Way to Go.. Risers... Rock in 2013

I feel sorry for Hyderabad. A city with a great tradition of cricketers such as CK Naidu and ML Jaisimha has to find Marans to create a team for them ! What a pity ! What will Srikanth and VVS contribute to this fledgling enterprise is a big question . Atleast VVS knows Cricket. What will Srikkanth be mentoring this team with ? May be he can be a mentor for talking and talking and more talking. Tom Moody will have to show a lot of patience . I doubt its flight .

what about saurav..no saurav no cricket

Posted by Jay.Raj on (December 20, 2012, 18:33 GMT)

I think Sunrisers should go for Akila dhanjaya. A conventional spinner with a few variations added. Will be a good use in Indian pitches which help spinners a lot.

Posted by   on (December 20, 2012, 18:30 GMT)

Pleased to see VVS name on the list. Havent heard from him after his retirement announcement, trust this should keep him busy

Posted by   on (December 20, 2012, 18:24 GMT)

What abt DADa?.. i will only support or watch ipl if any team Has DAda ....no dada no ipl..what ever his role for mentor, coach, any,.but we want Dada

Posted by sanjaycrickfan on (December 20, 2012, 18:05 GMT)

Good to see Hyderabad name in the team name unlike the previous team. It will get more fan following and good will than previously.

Posted by   on (December 20, 2012, 17:27 GMT)

Posted by sunrisers_dktej on (December 20, 2012, 15:13 GMT)

How will Ambati Rayudu comes into auction?

Posted by   on (December 20, 2012, 15:10 GMT)

Sun Risers !! IPL is never played in the mornings!! you should have named your team as sun setters or moon risers !! ;-) Solar chargers also would have been a good name ;-) atleast you would have given a message dat you go green ;-)

No Indian coaches in IPL, reason? They can not play so how would they coach?

Posted by fifer on (December 20, 2012, 12:37 GMT)

Good decision in the form of VVS , Not sure about the name, logo, srikkanth or moody. i liked the eagle btw, would love to see the team in green or red or any other, But no to any shades of blue or yellow please... and a strict NO to colours like kochi tuskers, KKR or KXIP! GO Eagles.....!

Posted by CricketMaan on (December 20, 2012, 12:25 GMT)

VVS as mentor amabassdor does not make sense..its like asking Sunny Gavaskar or Cook on how to play T20!! Cheeka anyways played his cricket like T20 so meets requirements, though he is no more a selector so what purpose will it solve for Sun?

Posted by asvigneshbalaji on (December 20, 2012, 12:16 GMT)

logo is fantastic... hope the team performs fantastic too...

Posted by Alexk400 on (December 20, 2012, 12:12 GMT)

Tom Moody working to coach of indian team. I think he is best out there. He is kinda john wright mould.

Posted by CricketMaan on (December 20, 2012, 12:08 GMT)

Of all the logos, DD is on the top..with Pune being the worst..KXIP is straight out of google ..while mumbai, csk and kkr and rcb are in between. and when it comes to kit..KXIP is horrendous, RCB and KKR better let that gold go..its awful..CSK has the best kit.

Posted by Smithie on (December 20, 2012, 12:06 GMT)

So how many Indian coaches does that make in the IPL ?????????

Posted by guru1438 on (December 20, 2012, 11:57 GMT)

oh that was a very well designed logo i really like that one

Posted by CricketMaan on (December 20, 2012, 11:54 GMT)

so bull replaced by eagle!! logo not very inspiring especially the font in that SunRisers..hopefully the kit won't disappoint and ofcourse thier cricket too.

Posted by CricketMaan on (December 20, 2012, 11:35 GMT)

Sanga must have infulenced this decsion, both Tom and Sanga has issues with Yuvi at KXIP, so they will now be back together just like they wanted. Good to see them joining hands after Lanka days. I'm looking forward to thier kit design and logo..the DC color was pathetic for T20 cirkcet.

its good step a head. moody has vast international experience
