Julian Hunte was mayor of Castries from 1970 to 1971, joining the St Lucia Labour party in 1978, becoming leader in 1984 and being elected to parliament three years later, leading the official opposition until 1996. In 2001 he was appointed to the senate and became foreign minister until 2004, since which time he has been the island's ambassador at the United Nations. He was chairman of the UN general assembly from 2003 to 2004. He is chairman and chief executive of the Julian R. Hunte group, an organisation with a network of agencies dealing with insurance, real estate and packaging and storage. He played cricket for St Lucia and later went on to act as an administrator, becoming president of the St Lucia CA and then the Windward Islands Cricket Board. He was a vice-president of the West Indies board before succeeding Ken Gordon as board president in July 2007.
