Cliff Tutton was a splendid all-round sportsman. At Durban High School he opened the batting with Jack Siedle, a lifelong friend, who was later to be South Africa's regular opening batsman. They were such a terror to opposing schools that the rest of the team rarely got an innings. Tutton, tall and very strong, was a dashing batsman and a terrific hitter.
In 1934-35 Natal had such extraordinary batting length that no fewer than seven batsmen scored centuries, a record for any team in South Africa. Tutton was one of them. The others almost read like a Springbok team Herby Taylor, Jack Siedle, Herbert Wade, Dudley Nourse, Eric Dalton and Lawrence Totter. In all he played no more than 10 first-class matches, but an average of 42 says alot for his ability.
