A middle-order batsman who made his first-class debut for Cambridge University, Ian McLachlan returned home to Adelaide and played four seasons with South Australia in the early 1960s. He was good enough to make several half-centuries against the touring England side in 1962-63 and was twelfth man for the Ashes Test in Adelaide that summer, but did not win a Test cap. He went on to achieve prominence in the business and political spheres, serving as president of the National Farmers Federation, chairman of Australian Wool Innovation, and as a federal member of parliament. He was Minister of Defence from 1996-98 in the government of John Howard, became a Cricket Australia director in 2004 and served as president of the South Australian Cricket Association.
