Edward Buckland was an allrounder who shone at Marlborough and played for Oxford in four years (1884 to 1887). In 1886 he took 5 for 14 to help Oxford to victory in the Varsity match and the following year he took match figures of 7 for 130. A week before that he enabled Oxford to beat Surrey at The Oval, scoring 148 on the opening day, and taking 5 for 25 on the last. So highly was he regarded as an all-round cricketer in 1887 that he was given a place in the Gentlemen's XI against the Players at Lord's. He played a few games for Middlesex in 1888 while working in the City, but he gave up that job to teach at Winchester, where he remained until his death. In 1895 he played four matches for Hampshire in the school holidays. He was also an excellent golfer, rackets and billards player.
