Walker Wainwright was a left-arm spinner and left-hand batsman who never quite lived up to the promise of his debut for Yorkshire in 1903 when he took a career-best 6 for 49 against MCC. Coming through the Yorkshire Colts and 2nd XI, he enjoyed a decent first season but was unable to secure a regular place in a strong side. He became an umpire after World War One, standing predominantly at Cambridge, although he stood in one Test, strangely at Durban, when England toured South Africa in 1922-23. Aside from that outing, he only officiated in lower-level first-class games.
