Typical of the allround games-player of pre-war years was Spencer Allen Block, who has died at the age of 71. A reserve half-back for England, a hockey international, fine golfer and an adept tennis player, he will be remembered in cricket as a Cambridge Blue in 1929, during which season he hit 108 against Sussex, and an occasional player for Surrey, for whom his best innings were 117
against Leicestershire in 1931 (199 in 155 minutes in partnership with Sandham) and 91 (in 50 minutes) against Middlesex, both at The Oval. He toured Egypt with H. M. Martineau's XI in 1929, and but for business this tall, powerful man might have made a considerable mark on the game.
