The seventh and last child born to Benjamin and Ann (Bowler) Caesar, grew up in an atmosphere of cricket. For 24 years he was associated with cricket in Godalming and was a founder member of Broadwater Cricket Club. In later life he was employed at Charterhouse School as cricket coach and groundsman. After a life stalked by tragic incidents he died impoverished in 1878 in his lodgings in Mill Lane.

He was a member of the first team from the British Isles to tour overseas - Parr's team to North America in 1859-60. This was a successful trip with each player taing home around £90. He was also a member of Parr's team that toured Australia and New Zealand in 1863-64, again a rewarding tour - not a single match lost and each player making around £250 after expenses. A Testimonial Match was played for Caesar's benefit on September 12-14, 1864 (scorecard). On the final evening an English gold lever watch and chain were presented to him at the public hall in Godalming together with a purse of sovereigns. A further benefit match was played on August 17-19 1868 (scorecard).

Julius Caesar was born at Godalming in Surrey March 25, 1830. Height 5ft 7 ½ in., and weight 12 st. 6 lbs., being for his size a very powerful man, and possessing some knowledge of the art of self-defence. As a batsman he is a fine free hitter, especially forward and to leg, and has made excellent scores for his county, especially in and about 1861. Fields well anywhere, though generally taking point, where he has made some wonderful catches. Is also an excellent long-stop, and can bowl fast round-armed, but is seldom "put on". It may be mentioned that Julius Caesar is a real name and not a feigned name, as has been supposed by many. Is a carpenter and joiner by trade at his native place.
