Teddy Griffith was a talented batsman who played Shell Shield cricket for Jamaica and Barbados. His cricketing pedegree was superb - his father was the legendary West Indies fast bowler Herman Griffith and two brothers also played first-class cricket. But he was also an academic, and his studies limited his appearances and ultimately led to his early retirement from the game.

He worked in the private sector, holding senior positions within corporations in Barbados and Jamaica. He headed the WICB's marketing committee before, in September 2003, taking over the presidency of the West Indies board at a time it was lurching towards crisis, and he was largely unable to stop the rot. Although West Indies were buoyed by preparations for the 2007 World Cup, on the field the team was in decline and the game's popularity slumping. His final months were dogged by controversy over sponsorship and an ongoing players' strike over contracts. Few were surprised when he announced that he was not going to seek a second two-year term.
