Indian Premier League, 19th match: Deccan Chargers v Kings XI Punjab at Hyderabad (Deccan), May 1, 2008
Kings XI Punjab won by 7 wickets (with 7 balls remaining)
1 May 2008 - night match (20-over match)

19:29 local Hello and welcome back to Cricinfo for yet another IPL double bill, game two of May Day, where the Deccan Chargers host Kings XI Punjab. I'm your host, Jamie Alter, with Raju handling scoring.

Let me just jog your memory as far as the two concerned teams go. Hyderabad picked up their first victory in the tournament against Mumbai on April 27 after losing three consecutive matches against Kolkata, Delhi and Rajasthan. Thanks to Adam Gilchrist's stunning hundred. Punjab, meanwhile, have won two of the four matches they've played so far.

Andrew Symonds is no longer with Hyderabad, so that opens up a spot for Herschelle Gibbs. Shahid Afridi has been in the wickets but his highest score is 10. Always a dangerous customer. Punjab have lost Brett Lee.

Word from the middle is that Punjab have won the toss and will field. James Hopes misses another game. Shaun Marsh, son of former Australian international Geoff, gets his first match of the tournament. Ramnaresh Sarwan is in, and Yuvraj Singh, the captain, cannot remember the third change. Lovely to see. So I'll tell you - its Gagandeep Singh, the Punjab fast bowler. I don't see how hard it can be to remember a couple names. I mean, you are a part of the team meetings, aren't you?

Anyway, Gibbs is definitely playing for Hyderabad. Venugopal Rao is back too.

The pitch at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium is suited for batting and the team chasing a target is expected to have an edge. Very hard track. Like a steel door in fact. Eleven out of 18 matches have been won by the side chasing.

There doesn't seem to be a large crowd at the venue, despite Gibbs' presence. That may change as the home team comes out to bat. And I don't see any cheerleaders yet. But Robin Jackman is yelling his lungs out in an attempt to get the fans cheering. Doesn't seem to be working. He's red as a beet, veins pumping.

19:57 local Time for the start. No confusion like last night's match in Delhi. Gilchrist and Laxman - doesn't have the ring of Greenidge and Haynes, does it? - are out in the middle.Good cheer from the home supporters. Sreesanth will open the attack. Gilly to face. Bit of dust in the air. Here we go!

Sreesanth to Gilchrist, no run, good length there, and the ball comes onto the bat nicely as Gilchrist stands his ground and pushes it to point

Sreesanth to Gilchrist, 1 run, full and wide, a loose one, and Gilchrist reaches out to slash it upwards of gully and it dribbles down to Pathan at third man

That brings VVS Laxman, the captain, to the crease.

Sreesanth to Laxman, no run, some swing now, gently, as Sreesanth pitches full outside off stump and Laxman, as he would during day one, session three of a Test match, shoulders arms

Sreesanth to Laxman, FOUR, now there's a shot! Sreesanth pitches it up on middle and leg and Laxman unfurls a lovely flick past midwicket, and he does make a living out playing such beauties

Sreesanth to Laxman, no run, another flowing shot, this time an off-drive, on the up, which is fielded by a diving extra-cover, robbing Laxman of four more

Sreesanth to Laxman, 1 run, edged and dropped! Sreesanth invites another booming drive outside the off and Laxman obliges, with absolutely no footwork, and as the ball deviates he edges but Sangakkara, flinging himself to his right, cannot hold on as the ball travels away from him, thats a life for Laxman

End of over 1 (6 runs) Deccan Chargers 6/0 (RR: 6.00)

    • VVS Laxman 5 (4b 1x4)
    • AC Gilchrist 1 (2b)
    • S Sreesanth 1-0-6-0

Here's Irfan Pathan, left arm over the stumps

Pathan to Laxman, 1 run, and he begins with a full toss on leg stump, which is patted to midwicket

Can Laxman cash in on that reprieve from Sangakkara? Lets find out. But here's Gilchrist.

Pathan to Gilchrist, 1 run, good ball, pitching on a length and swinging in to catch a clueless Gilchrist rooted to his crease, lucky to survive with an inside-edge past leg stump

Pathan to Laxman, FOUR, don't bowl to this man there, boss! On the pads and Laxman only has to roll the wrists delicately to send the ball speeding across the outfield between square leg and midwicket

Pathan to Laxman, no run, and he follows up with an ugly drive from the crease, front foot nowhere close to the pitch of the ball, to keep Sangakkara and slip interested

Pathan to Laxman, FOUR, good grief, and then he goes and does that! A flowing, textbook cover-drive on the up between two men and the ball speeds away again, all class

Pathan to Laxman, no run, this one's on a length and he flicks from off stump to midwicket

A life, some perfection-personified shots, and a couple ungainly misses. Its all happening.

End of over 2 (10 runs) Deccan Chargers 16/0 (RR: 8.00)

    • VVS Laxman 14 (9b 3x4)
    • AC Gilchrist 2 (3b)
    • IK Pathan 1-0-10-0
    • S Sreesanth 1-0-6-0

Sreesanth to Gilchrist, 1 run, a tad full and Gilchrist drives firmly to the man at mid-off for one

Back over to Laxman, who looks excellent so far.

Sreesanth to Laxman, 1 run, back of a length on the stumps and he works it to mid-on for one more

No real movement yet, hence Sreesanth and Pathan are being negated.

Sreesanth to Gilchrist, 3 runs, drives hard from his crease, eying extra-cover, but gets too much bottom hand and ends up dragging it past midwicket, but he gets a triple for his efforts

Sreesanth to Laxman, no run, short of a length on off stump and thats a typical Laxman flick, supple of wrist, to an alert midwicket

Change in the field: deep fine leg into the circle, midwicket goes back

Sreesanth to Laxman, FOUR, change of pace, but a tad too full on off stump and Laxman just flicks that superbly past mid-on, nothing more than a push, and the ball greets the boundary, wow!

Sreesanth to Laxman, 1 run, short of a length this time and he softly taps that past a diving backward point to keep hold of the scoring

My he looks in good form this evening, Laxman.

End of over 3 (10 runs) Deccan Chargers 26/0 (RR: 8.66)

    • VVS Laxman 20 (13b 4x4)
    • AC Gilchrist 6 (5b)
    • S Sreesanth 2-0-16-0
    • IK Pathan 1-0-10-0

Pathan to Laxman, 1 run, good length, but Laxman stays on the back foot and tries to drive, mistiming the shot back to Pathan, who fumbles and allows a single to midwicket

Pathan to Gilchrist, OUT, bowled 'em! Gilchrist was superb in the last game as Laxman was an onlooker, but he fails tonight, just swinging from his crease with zero footwork to one pitched up and swinging in, and the ball makes contact underneath his bat to send Pathan into his jig

AC Gilchrist b Pathan 6 (6b 0x4 0x6) SR: 100.00

Kings XI Punjab strike early, taking out the dangerous Gilchrist, but here's Gibbs on IPL debut.

Pathan to Gibbs, 1 wide, thats a wide as Pathan pitches it up and moves it miles outside off stump

Pathan to Gibbs, 1 run, back of a length and Gibbs is away in the IPL with a push into the covers, where Marsh slides around and fields well

Pathan to Laxman, 1 run, slower ball, looking for the yorker, jammed back down to Pathan's left, who dives and half stops it but they cross for a single to mid-off

Pathan to Gibbs, no run, good length, pitching and swinging away not too far outside off stump as Gibbs gets the front foot forward and holds back the bat with a twirl

Pathan to Gibbs, no run, tries to dab a shorter one to gully but the ball comes onto him slower than expected and he ends up chopping to backward point

A very good over from Pathan, getting rid of Gilchrist.

End of over 4 (4 runs) Deccan Chargers 30/1 (RR: 7.50)

    • HH Gibbs 1 (3b)
    • VVS Laxman 22 (15b 4x4)
    • IK Pathan 2-0-14-1
    • S Sreesanth 2-0-16-0

Sreesanth to Laxman, no run, short outside off and he punches elegantly off the back foot to point

Sreesanth to Laxman, 1 run, good length and he closes the face of the bat as he drives hard from the crease, the ball goes to midwicket and he sets off, panting to get to the other end and is let off by a miss from the fielder

Sreesanth to Gibbs, 1 run, slashes off the front foot and Marsh dives around at backward point, sticking out a hand to save runs and his effort is well appreciated by Sreesanth

Sreesanth to Laxman, no run, steps out and mistimes the slog along the ground to mid-on, who's deep

Sreesanth to Laxman, 1 wide, slower ball goes awry, looping out well wide of off stump for a freebie

Sreesanth has struggled all tournament

Sreesanth to Laxman, FOUR, just outside off stump and Laxman works it across the line uneasily, reaching out, but mid-on makes a mess of his dive and allows the ball to go past him

Sreesanth to Laxman, 1 run, another slower ball outside off, pushed to point and Gibbs harries down

End of over 5 (8 runs) Deccan Chargers 38/1 (RR: 7.60)

    • VVS Laxman 28 (20b 5x4)
    • HH Gibbs 2 (4b)
    • S Sreesanth 3-0-24-0
    • IK Pathan 2-0-14-1

This is a positive start from Hyderabad. Yuvraj replaces Pathan with VRV Singh.

Singh to Laxman, FOUR, too full outside off stump and Laxman deals with as best he knows, getting to the pitch and caressing it all along the ground past extra cover, excellent

Singh to Laxman, no run, this one's shorter and stops on him, he shapes to work it across the line but it goes in the air to mid-on, landing safely before the man there

Singh to Laxman, FOUR, edged just wide of a diving Sangakkara, Laxman flashing off the back foot and looking on thankfully as the ball deviates away from a leaping 'keeper for four

Singh to Laxman, 1 run, on the pads and he whips that down to deep backward square leg

Singh to Gibbs, 3 runs, good shot from Gibbs, pushing uppishly past extra cover and it takes some good chasing down from Yuvraj to haul it in near the ropes

Singh to Laxman, no run, good length but a touch wide and he drives on the up to point

End of over 6 (12 runs) Deccan Chargers 50/1 (RR: 8.33)

    • VVS Laxman 37 (25b 7x4)
    • HH Gibbs 5 (5b)
    • VRV Singh 1-0-12-0
    • S Sreesanth 3-0-24-0

Spin now, as Piyush Chawla gets called on.

Chawla to Gibbs, 1 run, flighted up a tad too full and he paddles from middle and off down the pads

Chawla to Laxman, 1 run, flighted up, he reaches out and plays across the line to midwicket

Chawla to Gibbs, no run, flatter trajectory, lands short and Gibbs rocks back to cut into the covers

Chawla to Gibbs, 1 run, quicker one, spins in and cramps Gibbs, who gets a thin inside-edge

Chawla to Laxman, 1 run, dropped but that was very hard and flat to midwicket, where Marsh dives across the turf and fails to latch onto a scorching pull shot, Chawla dropped short and Laxman belted that very hard

Chawla to Gibbs, OUT, but thats taken, as Gibbs fails to curb his enthusiasm and slogs that out into the hands of a lurking deep midwicket sweeper, who didn't have to do much on the ropes

HH Gibbs c Goel b Chawla 7 (9b 0x4 0x6) SR: 77.77

End of over 7 (4 runs) Deccan Chargers 54/2 (RR: 7.71)

    • VVS Laxman 39 (27b 7x4)
    • PP Chawla 1-0-4-1
    • VRV Singh 1-0-12-0

Chawla strikes in his first over as Punjab pull things back. Loud cheer as Rohit Sharma comes out.

Singh to Laxman, 1 run, short of a length and thats a lovely back-foot punch into the covers

Singh to Sharma, 1 run, shorter one gets him up onto the toes, working it to midwicket

Singh to Laxman, 2 runs, low full toss and he flicks it across the line with plenty of bottom hand, and the man running around from long-on, Goel, has to dive to stop the boundary

Singh to Laxman, no run, better length and it stops on Laxman, who nearly taps it back to VRV

Singh to Laxman, 1 run, not a shot he'd be proud of but its runs, Laxman reaching out and working it ungainly past mid-on down to Goel again

One slip in place

Singh to Sharma, no run, short of a length and Sharma gets across to play it straight to point

End of over 8 (5 runs) Deccan Chargers 59/2 (RR: 7.37)

    • RG Sharma 1 (2b)
    • VVS Laxman 43 (31b 7x4)
    • VRV Singh 2-0-17-0
    • PP Chawla 1-0-4-1

A few emails asking if Preity Zinta is at the ground. I've not seen her yet.

Chawla to Laxman, FOUR, short on the stumps and Laxman transfers the weight, pulling low past midwicket out to Pathan on the ropes, who fields miserably to let the ball by

Chawla to Laxman, 1 run, short of a length and he drives on the up to the man at cover

Chawla to Sharma, no run, flighted on a length, it stops and the batsman plays it back to Chawla

Chawla to Sharma, 2 runs, flighted fuller and he uses his feet to drive out to the cover sweeper

Chawla to Sharma, 1 run, quicker one spins into him and he gets bat down to nudge to midwicket

Chawla to Laxman, OUT, thats a big wicket, and so softly done! Chawla gets a second, flighting it up in the air and getting it to dip on Laxman, who is beaten in the flight and early into the stroke, which is chipped to Yuvraj in the covers, who pops up and takes it on the second attempt

VVS Laxman c Yuvraj Singh b Chawla 48 (34b 8x4 0x6) SR: 141.17

So Laxman, after playing so well, departs for 48. A good knock. Huge roars for Shahid Afridi.

End of over 9 (8 runs) Deccan Chargers 67/3 (RR: 7.44)

    • RG Sharma 4 (5b)
    • PP Chawla 2-0-12-2
    • VRV Singh 2-0-17-0

Chawla has bowled well so far. Two wickets in two overs.

Singh to Sharma, 1 run, back of a length on the stumps and its driven to midwicket easily

Singh to Shahid Afridi, 1 run, he likes the width and hammers it along the turf to Pathan at deep cover

Singh to Sharma, 1 run, banged in short, Sharma opens the face as he gets onto the toes, running it down to the right of Jayawardene at slip, who dives and saves a boundary

Singh to Shahid Afridi, 1 run, full on off stump and he drives along the ground to extra-cover

Singh to Sharma, FOUR, bang, thats four! VRV drops short again but this time Sharma sizes him up and clubs him over midwicket, initially coming forward but getting back superbly

Singh to Sharma, 1 run, change of pace but he checks the shot past the bowler to long-off

Sharma has had a good tournament. Afridi mood mein hai aaj, judging by his shots so far.

End of over 10 (9 runs) Deccan Chargers 76/3 (RR: 7.60)

    • RG Sharma 11 (9b 1x4)
    • Shahid Afridi 2 (2b)
    • VRV Singh 3-0-26-0
    • PP Chawla 2-0-12-2

Irfan Pathan replaces Chawla, who has taken two wickets so far.

Pathan to Sharma, no run, fullish on off stump and he drives off the front foot, but Pathan fields well

Pathan to Sharma, 1 run, a touch too wide and he drives on the up past mid-off down to the fielder

Pathan to Shahid Afridi, no run, slips out as a loose full toss outside off stump but Afridi can't connect

Pathan to Shahid Afridi, 1 run, change of pace, back of a length, but he waits and dabs it to third man

Pathan to Sharma, 1 run, short on the stumps but Sharma pirouettes very well, importantly making sure to keep the ball down, and he picks the gap at square leg, Chawla fields in the deep

Pathan to Shahid Afridi, FOUR, too short and at that pace it just sits up, allowing Afridi to pull finer than what Sharma did, uppish though it was, past the man at square leg

End of over 11 (7 runs) Deccan Chargers 83/3 (RR: 7.54)

    • Shahid Afridi 7 (5b 1x4)
    • RG Sharma 13 (12b 1x4)
    • IK Pathan 3-0-21-1
    • VRV Singh 3-0-26-0

And here's Gagandeep Singh on IPL debut.

Gagandeep Singh to Sharma, no run, on middle and leg and Sharma clips that to midwicket, who fields

Gagandeep Singh to Sharma, no run, bowled wider outside off stump and he drives from the crease, missing, and thats well kept by Sangakkara, standing up to the stumps

Gagandeep Singh to Sharma, 1 run, a touch too straight and he shuffles, on-driving for a single

Gagandeep Singh to Shahid Afridi, SIX, there he goes, clubbing it across from just outside off stump for a big six over deep midwicket, one leg up as is his wont

Gagandeep Singh to Shahid Afridi, OUT, rush of blood sends him back inside, but thats a good catch from Yuvraj! Afridi loses his marbles, heaving at one and getting a top-edge up into the starry night, Yuvraj keeps his eyes trained on the ball in the covers and takes it, falling down onto his back, then juggling and holding onto it on the third attempt

Shahid Afridi c Yuvraj Singh b Gagandeep Singh 13 (7b 1x4 1x6) SR: 185.71

Afridi's terrible tournament with the bat continues. In comes Venugopal Rao.

Gagandeep Singh to Sharma, no run, drives from his crease and misses, another good take from Sangakkara

End of over 12 (7 runs) Deccan Chargers 90/4 (RR: 7.50)

    • RG Sharma 14 (16b 1x4)
    • Y Venugopal Rao 0 (0b)
    • Gagandeep Singh 1-0-7-1

Chawla comes back into the attack

Chawla to Venugopal Rao, 1 run, tossed up on the stumps and he on-drives wide of midwicket

Chawla to Sharma, 1 run, flatter outside off, he waits for turn and glides it to short third man, where VRV flings it back to Chawla, who doesn't get behind the stumps and allows one

Chawla to Venugopal Rao, OUT, madness! Chawla beats the batsman with a flipper, but its outside the line of impact, then the batsmen decide to sneak in a leg-bye but their communication is pathetic, both hesitating as Chawla runs forward and picks and throws back to Sangakkara, the run was never on

Y Venugopal Rao run out 1 (2b 0x4 0x6) SR: 50.00

Chawla to Bangar, no run, flatter one outside the line, he drives and misses as Chawla appeals

Gagandeep Singh to Sharma, 2 runs, straight on the stumps, Sharma walks across and clips out to the deep and calls for the two

Gagandeep Singh to Sharma, 1 run, back of a length, he half-pushes it back to Gagandeep's right, safely wide, and the ball rolls down towards mid-on for a single

Gagandeep Singh to Bangar, 1 run, full on the pads, Bangar uses his feet and drives past midwicket

The boundaries have dried up a touch thanks to some needless wickets.

End of over 14 (5 runs) Deccan Chargers 98/5 (RR: 7.00)

    • RG Sharma 18 (19b 1x4)

    • PP Chawla 3-0-15-2

Chawla to Bangar, OUT, another one goes! Bangar skips down and tries to hit Chawla over long-on but isn't to the pitch and so doesn't middle it, so Sreesanth comes in and dives forward to hold a good catch, handing Chawla his third

SB Bangar c Sreesanth b Chawla 3 (8b 0x4 0x6) SR: 37.50

Nuwan Zoysa is the new batsman. Hyderabad are falling apart. Its all down to Sharma.

Chawla to Sharma, 1 run, full outside off stump and thats driven hard to the man at mid-off

Slip comes into place

Gagandeep Singh to Sharma, no run, on a length and he drives on the up, failing to beat the man at cover

Gagandeep Singh to Sharma, no run, starts to walk across and the bowler fires it in on a yorker length, Sharma just manages to jam bat down on it, very well bowled

Gagandeep Singh to Sharma, no run, and again, yorker on the stumps and its dug out back to the bowler

Gagandeep Singh to Sharma, no run, another one in that zone but Sharma escapes by just squeezing bat on it and running it to short third man

Top over so far from Gagandeep

Gagandeep Singh to Sharma, FOUR, steps out and converts it into a full toss, shuffling and hammering wide of mid-on and midwicket for a one-bounce four, well played

Gagandeep Singh to Sharma, FOUR, four more! Sharma is turning it on, just clearing the front leg and drilling this one back over Gagandeep's head, again one bounce and over the ropes

Sreesanth to Kalyankrishna, no run, changes the length and its the same result, the ball hitting the seam and beating the bat as the tail-ender makes room and feels for it outside off stump

Sreesanth to Sharma, FOUR, top shot, Sreesanth erring in length and Sharma pulling past midwicket

Singh to Kalyankrishna, no run, full outside off, Kalyankrishna backs away and isn't able to connect

Singh to Kalyankrishna, 1 bye, repeat of that shot, except this time Sharma calls his partner down and survives as Sangakkara misses with the under-arm flick to the stumps

Can he get a boundary? Or will he want strike?

Singh to Sharma, FOUR, he gets four, moving to fifty from just 34 balls! He gets back and heaves the ball just over midwicket, picking his spot excellently, to get the fans on their feet

Gagandeep Singh to Sharma, 2 runs, makes room and goes over extra-cover but its not timed well, landing safely between three fielders converging on the boundary

Gagandeep Singh to Sharma, 2 runs, slogs this one miles into the air, getting too much under it, but survives as Pomersbach fails to cling on with an excellent dive running forward from long-off, then he fires in a good throw to Sangakkara, but replays show Sharma was just in

Gagandeep Singh to Sharma, FOUR, and he just rolls on, stepping across and scooping over short fine leg

Gagandeep Singh to Sharma, FOUR, what an over! This time he slams the length delivery flat over mid-on!

He is a player to watch out for. Big things lie ahead for Sharma. Last over to go.

Pathan to Kalyankrishna, OUT, oh well held, Marsh! Brilliant effort at backward point, diving horizontally to his right to cup a firm slash from Kalyankrishna, dancing down the track, perfectly balanced in the air ... one for the album, I'd say

D Kalyankrishna c Marsh b Pathan 3 (8b 0x4 0x6) SR: 37.50

Here's RP Singh

Pathan to Singh, 1 run, makes room and drives just over a leaping cover fielder's fingertips, Sharma wanted to come back for two but RP sent him back, wisely

Pathan to Sharma, SIX, massive! Sharma, take a bow! Judges the length, transfers the weight, and sends this one rows back over cow corner for another six

Pathan to Sharma, 1 run, loses a hand off the bat but still clips the full ball over square leg

Pathan to Singh, 1 run, full on the stumps, RP makes room and slashes past backward point

Right, last ball ... another six?

Pathan to Sharma, 1 leg bye, not to be, as Sharma walks right across to expose all the stumps, trying to scoop it away but instead running a leg-bye to short third man

Another excellent innings from Sharma gets Hyderabad to 164 for 8. A very competitive Twenty20 score, I feel. Put into bat, Hyderabad lost Gilchrist early but Laxman and later Sharma came good, especially the latter. Chawla pegged the home side back but Sharma was unstoppable. Can Punjab chase this down? Do join me for the chase very shortly to find out.
