Indian Premier League - 29th match

Kolkata Knight Riders v Royal Challengers Bangalore

Kolkata Knight Riders won by 5 runs

Toss: Sourav Ganguly has decided to bat. It's a 16 over game and he wants to make use of the good batting pitch. The wet outfeld has played a part in his decision as well.

Team news: Taibu gets a game for Kolkata. Hodge will open. Murali Kartik comes in ahead of Ajit Agarkar. Aakash Chopra is in too. Bangalore have decided to leave out Misbah-ul-Haq. Cameron White gets another game, Boucher returns, Vinay Kumar too. Kallis sits out and J Arun Kumar (JAK for short) gets a game. Quite a personnel change from both sides. Sounds more like a transit lounge in an airport.

We're getting somewhere here. The players are out in the middle. Some moisture in the air but the pitch looks a good one.

Update: 21:16 local time - the drizzle has stopped and they've once again started removing the covers. The official cut off time for 5-over-a-side game is 23:10. So we have nearly two hours more to go. Hopefully the rains stops and we get a game underway.

Update : 21:00 local time - We have some bad news for you - just as the ground staff finished clearing the covers it started to drizzle and they had to bring the covers back in. At the moment there is a pretty steady drizzle about... Watch this space for further updates.

Update: It's 8:30pm local time now and the rain has finally relented. The covers are being taken off and there's a chance that we could have a full game here. This, by the way, is a grudge match. Kolkata walloped Bangalore in the first match of the IPL (made marsh-mellows out of them, more like) but both teams are struggling at this stage of the competition. Bangalore have sacked their CEO and Kolkata might drop a couple of players. All happening.

By the way this is Siddhartha Vaidyanathan at the commentary booth. I began supporting dear 'ol Kolkata (korbo, lorbo, jeetbo and all) but have lost a bit of faith over the last few days. Will decide who to support at some stage.

Update: The covers are out and they're almost over the whole ground. The square is patched up, as is the outfield. A multi-colored Eden and a wet one too. Big crowd gathered here but they're going to have to wait a while.

Hello and welcome to Cricinfo's coverage of Kolkata v Bangalore. It's not great news at Eden Gardens, where it's been raining steadily from 6:45pm local time. The covers came on at 6:50pm. It's just got heavier around 7:15pm and chances of having a toss on time appear remote. Be with us as we bring you more updates.

For your information, the minimum number of overs needed for a complete match is 5. Bangalore have been branded as a Test side. And now there is a possibility of playing a Five5. Surely I'm backing them for that one.

0.1

Steyn to Chopra, no run, pacy straight away, short of a length and Aakash Chopra pushes and looks for a quick single, can't get it though

a delay here. The super-sopper has stalled in the outfield and nobody can move it. Classic. Gives Chopra a bit of time to collect his thoughts. I'm very interested to see how he does here. More power to the conventional batsman, I say.

0.2

Steyn to Chopra, 1 run, off the mark, played with soft hands there and takes off for a quick single to short cover

0.3

Steyn to Hodge, no run, full and straight, driven to point, straight to the fielder

0.4

Steyn to Hodge, no run, short of a length and outside off, shoulders arms, glad to know such liberties can still be taken in a 16-16 format.

0.5

Steyn to Hodge, 1 run, full and straight, fine start here, tapped towards mid-on and takes off for a single

0.6

Steyn to Chopra, no run, glided to point, "No" is the call, two runs off the first over, what a fine start, Aakash and Brad. Keep going this way and you'll get 32 by the end of the innings.

Zaheer Khan to share the new ball. I see a lot of vacant spaces in the ground but there's always a lot of noise at Eden. Maybe they have good speakers.

1.1

Khan to Hodge, 1 run, short of a length, cramps him for room, fended to the off side and they take off

1.3

Khan to Hodge, no run, driven to cover, four in the ring there, Zaheer doing it well here

1.4

Khan to Hodge, no run, straight and back of a length, tapped carefully towards cover, a big boo from the crowd, they don't like dots here

1.5

Khan to Hodge, FOUR, tries to cramp him for room again and he's swatted that with fine agricultural skills , full rotation of his hips and the ball races away towards square

1.6

Khan to Hodge, 1 wide, over the wicket and it's too wide, down the leg side

1.6

Khan to Hodge, no run, full and straight, driven back to the bowler but it's stopped by the non-striker's stumps. Good over from Zaheer, despite the four he conceded

2.1

Steyn to Chopra, OUT, gone, that's a familiar Chopra dismissal, he moves across the stumps and tries to flick it towards the leg side, Steyn keeps it straight and that would have rattled middle and leg, Chopra has been out in that fashion earlier. And he has to go now too.

2.2

Steyn to Ganguly, 1 wide, short straight away (what else you ask?) but it's down leg side this time, tries to flick it away but can't make contact, wide called

2.2

Steyn to Ganguly, no run, short of a length, pushed off the back foot, straight to the fielder

2.3

Steyn to Ganguly, FOUR, silken, risky but silken, full and outside off, lifted over the in-field for a four, that was airy but in the gap and all the way, fine timing that

2.4

Steyn to Ganguly, no run, keeps a bit low, outside off but doesn't rise as much as he expected, goes past the inside edge, Boucher collects it near his ankles

2.5

Steyn to Ganguly, 1 run, slower one, turned away to fine leg for a single

2.6

Steyn to Hodge, FOUR, under-cut that one, past the keeper for four, that was too wide and Hodge simply had to slash hard, the ball took the bottom-edge and ran away to the third man region

3.1

Khan to Ganguly, 1 run, outside off, short of a length, steered away to the third man region, they think of a second but Steyn fires in an accurate throw, good intensity there

3.2

Khan to Hodge, no run, jumps out even before the ball is delivered, it's dropped short and he can only fend away from his body towards cover

3.3

Khan to Hodge, OUT, got 'em, these dismissals are becoming commonplace in this tournament, short and Hodge waits for the pull, swivels around to smash that hard but he can't keep it on the ground, flies towards square leg where the fielder doesn't have to move. Straight into the bread-basket that as Bangalore strike again. End of Hodge

David Hussey is in but not on strike

3.4

Khan to Ganguly, no run, short of a length, cramping Dada for room again, inside edge nearly runs past the keeper but he's alert here, pulling off a fine stop

3.5

Khan to Ganguly, 5 runs, full and straight, Ganguly got a thin inside edge onto his pads and they scamper a quick run, Virat Kohli picks it up at point and fires in a throw but both Zaheer and Praveen Kumar fail to back-up, that runs away for four over-throws. How sloppy is that? How Bangalore?

3.6

Khan to Hussey, no run, 136kph, straight again, Hussey pushes tamely to the off side

4.3

Kumar to Ganguly, 1 run, slower one this time, tucked away to the leg side for a single

4.4

Kumar to Hussey, no run, some swing here, Praveen is a good one with a bit of moisture in the air, Hussey tries to force it through the covers but only gets an inside edge onto the pads

4.5

Kumar to Hussey, SIX, slower ball, faster hit, waited for it and boshed that way over the bowlers head for a biggie, he knew that was coming

4.6

Kumar to Hussey, FOUR, rubs it in with a scorching drive through the covers, this was too full and he moved forward and creamed it past the infield

Vinay Kumar is on now. Nippy medium-pacer who's had a good run in the Ranji Trophy this year.

5.1

Vinay Kumar to Ganguly, no run, bit of shape away from the batsman, batsman gets behind the line to drive to short midwicket

5.2

Vinay Kumar to Ganguly, 2 runs, tapped to cover, and the call is for two straight away, Zaheer comes around but he needs to watch out for a bit of wetness on he outfield

5.3

Vinay Kumar to Ganguly, 1 run, short one, but lacks the pace to hurry him, on the back foot and paddled around to fine leg for a single

5.4

Vinay Kumar to Hussey, no run, short of a length, raps him on the pads, can't get it through the leg side

5.5

Kumble comes on. It's just the seventh over of the match but we're almost halfway into the innings. "Dada has always struggled against Zaheer. Lets see how he copes in this game," says George. May have to wait a bit, George

6.1

Kumble to Ganguly, no run, pushed to the off side

6.2

Kumble to Ganguly, no run, quicker one, a bit of turn too, appeal goes up after the batsman is struck on the pads but that's a tough one to give

6.3

Kumble to Ganguly, FOUR, class, full and outside off and he's laced a four through the covers with the ease of someone cracking open an egg, super placement, that could have been struck on the first morning of a Test

6.4

Kumble to Ganguly, no run, jabbed to the point region but straight to the fielder

6.5

Kumble to Ganguly, no run, defended to short extra cover, no run again

7.1

Vinay Kumar to Hussey, 1 run, straight again, what people call 'wicket-to-wicket', defended to the off side but they manage a quick one. I prefer 'wicked-to-wicked'

7.2

Vinay Kumar to Ganguly, no run, back of a length, on middle and leg, tapped to the leg side again, fielder is there again, Eden sighs again, Kalyan Mitra, though, smiles. He's done a fine job as a groundsman and he can afford to

7.3

Vinay Kumar to Ganguly, OUT, this is what was not needed at this point, Ganguly takes off for a risky single and the fielder at mid-on lets in an accurate under-arm throw, Cameron White is alert there and he's gone for all money. The third umpire takes a long time but this is Kolkata and he better. Out it is.

8.3

Kumble to Taibu, 1 run, this time he's ready before the ball is bowler, another reverse-paddle, more a big heave but can't get the timing right, only mange a single because the fielders are waiting

8.4

Kumble to Hussey, SIX, swoosh, down the track and bang, that's the way to go, he tells Tatenda, as the ball soars into the stands at long-off

8.5

Kumble to Hussey, SIX, short one this time and that's gone, stands back and pounds that way over midwicket for a huge one, cracker of a shot, Hussey on a mission here

8.6

Kumble to Hussey, 1 leg bye, OUT, another! run-out again, turned towards fine leg and they think of two but Steyn lets go a sensational throw, straight over the bails and Hussey has no chance in getting back, Boucher does the rest and the umpire doesn't even refer the decision (which was pretty close). What a throw that was. Steyn is all geed up here, for sure.
