Indian Premier League - 37th match

Delhi Daredevils v Deccan Chargers

Delhi Daredevils won by 12 runs

7.58 pm local time: The last time these two teams met, Virender Sehwag cracked 94 off 41 balls to win the match for Delhi. He's out there at the moment, opening the innings with Gautam Gambhir. Delhi haven't got off to the best starts while batting first but these two must fancy their chances against Deccan's weak bowling line up. Vijaykumar is opening the bowling, from round the wicket. He's changed to over the wicket now. One slip in place.

Toss, 7.30 pm: Arun Lal says the pitch is hard, flat, and well rolled which should amount to a lot of runs. However, there's also a bit of grass on the pitch and that could be helpful for McGrath and Co. Delhi have favoured chasing in the tournament, and so have Deccan. Both of Deccan's victories have come while chasing, and thanks to superb innings from Adam Gilchrist.

Gilchrist calls heads and a heads it is. He's decided to bowl. He wants to give his bowlers a chance to restrict Delhi and hopes his solid batting order will fire.

Deccan have brought back Shahid Afridi, a spectacular failure in the tournament so far, for Chaminda Vaas. The boundaries are small at the Kotla and Afridi could take advantage of them. Sarvesh Kumar has replaced Sanjay Bangar. Their bowling looks a bit thin, well thinner than usual.

Deccan Chargers; 1 Adam Gilchrist (capt & wk), 2 Herschelle Gibbs, 3 Venugopal Rao, 4 Rohit Sharma, 5 Ravi Teja, 6 Scott Styris, 7 Shahid Afridi, 8 Sarvesh kumar, 9 Pragyan Ojha, 10 RP Singh, 11 P Vijaykumar.

Delhi have made three changes. AB de Villiers, Pradeep Sangwan and Yo Mahesh miss out and in come Dinesh Karthik, Rajat Bhatia and Mohammad Asif.

Delhi Daredevils: 1 Gautam Gambhir, 2 Virender Sehwag (capt), 3 Shikhar Dhawan, 4 Dinesh Karthik (wk), 5 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 6 Manoj Tiwary, 7 Rajat Bhatia, 8 Amit Mishra, 9 Farveez Maharoof, 10 Mohammad Asif, 11 Glenn McGrath.

7.15 pm: Good evening champs and welcome to another IPL game. Today's match is between Delhi Daredevils and Deccan Chargers at the Feroz Shah Kotla and I'll (George Binoy that is) bring you the excitement as it unfolds.

By the way, England's international summer began today, with the first Test against New Zealand at Lord's, and as good as it was to see the players in whites again, the pace of run-scoring - three an over - took a while to get used to.

Back to today's game then and S Rajesh's preview says that the wheels seem to have come off Delhi's IPL campaign. "The good news for them, though, is the schedule: two of their next three games are against Deccan Chargers and Bangalore Royal Challengers, clearly the weakest teams in the tournament. On current form it might appear that Deccan are already out of the tournament, but if they win the rest of their matches and other results go their way, they can still make a push for a semi-final spot."

If Deccan pull off a victory today it will also be a tremendous boost to Mumbai and Kolkata's chances of a semi-final spot. At the moment, both those teams are competing with Delhi for the fourth berth.

In other IPL news, the Rajasthan Royals are confident that their overseas players will stay on despite the bomb blasts in Jaipur on Tuesday. This development comes after Darren Berry, the Rajasthan Royals team manager, said there was a "real option" that three of the team's highest profile players would not return to Jaipur.

Sriram Veera also looks into the trend of lower totals as the IPL has progressed: "The slowdown seems to be a combination of factors - the changing nature of the pitches, bowlers becoming smarter, the departure of some big-hitting batsmen and the increasing pressure on the batsmen as the tournament moves closer to the semi-final stage and the high stakes involved become clearer."

9.37 pm local time: Delhi have posted a formidable target, 194 for 4. It is their highest total of the IPL and they have Gambhir to thank for it. He scored a terrific 79 off 48 balls and was well supported by Dhawan who was unbeaten on 68. Maharoof and Dilshan added the finishing touches.

I'll be back in ten minutes for Deccan's run-chase. They'll need a special innings from someone to chase this target down.
