Indian Premier League - Final

Chennai Super Kings v Rajasthan Royals

Rajasthan Royals won by 3 wickets (with 0 balls remaining)

8.18 pm local time: It's game time folks. Vidyut and Parthiv are Chennai's openers. Tanvir has the new ball, bowling left-arm fast from over the wicket. Billy Bowden and Rudi Koertzen are the umpires.

8.15 pm local time: "It appears they want to start at 20:20!" says Sanjiv.

Here's a stat from the preview: "Fifteen of Sohail Tanvir's 21 wickets have come during the last five overs of an innings, a period during which he's conceded only 5.85 an over, the best economy-rate among bowlers who've bowled at least 20 balls between overs 16-20."

Toss, 8.00 pm: Finally the toss is happening, Shane Warne and Mahendra Singh Dhoni are the men who matter. Lalit Modi is with the captains, as is the match referee Javagal Srinath.

Modi's tossing the coin, Warne calls heads and a heads it is. Rajasthan continue to stick to their plan of bowling first. They've done it consistently during the tournament.

As expected Rajasthan have replaced the injured Smith with Akmal and Rawat with Niraj Patel.

Rajasthan Royals: 1 Niraj Patel, 2 Swapnil Asnodkar, 3 Kamran Akmal (wk), 4 Shane Watson, 5 Mohammad Kaif, 6 Yusuf Pathan, 7 Ravindra Jadeja 8 Sohail Tanvir, 9 Shane Warne (capt), 10 Siddharth Trivedi, 11 Munaf Patel.

Dhoni is looking forward to batting first at a venue which he says hasn't been the most high-scoring. He says Chennai are peaking at the right time ...

Chennai Super Kings are fielding an unchanged side from the team beat Punjab in the semi-final.

Chennai Super Kings: 1 Parthiv Patel (wk), 2 S Vidyut, 3 Suresh Raina, 4 Mahendra Singh Dhoni (capt) 5 Chamara Kapugedera, 6 S Badrinath, 7 Albie Morkel, 8 Manpreet Gony, 9 L Balaji, 10 Muttiah Muralitharan, 11 Makhaya Ntini.

7.53 pm local time: Mumbai is hosting the final because their owner bid the most for the franchise - $111.9 million. Bangalore was second - $111.6 million. I've got word that it's pouring in Bangalore at the moment so just as well they didn't bid highest!

"Oh.. when will they start.. I have been up whole night so that i don't fall asleep when the match starts," says Ankur from the United States. I don't know either.

"What is happening is ridiculous. The final of the IPL should be about cricket and not about dances, music and various acrobats showing their talents. The toss and start of the match being delayed shows what a farce this is. It reminds me of the final of the World Cup in 2007," says Shashi.

7.30 pm: Well I don't think the toss is happening at 7.30 pm because the crowd is being entertained by a fantastic performance from a troupe the announcer introduced as the Cirque du Soleil.

And now there's more dancing to Bollywood numbers ... and Salman Khan. It's getting a bit much now frankly.

So the toss will happen in a bit I suppose. Though given the track record of these two teams, Rajasthan have preferred to chase while Chennai favour batting first. I wonder, though, whether Warne will want his team to chase under the pressure of the IPL final.

It's laser time now. Streaks of green light streak across the DY Patil Stadium with orchestra music accompanying the light. Like a musical Matrix. There's fire in the sky, from a para glider, and then some on the ground as well.

7.25 pm: There's a whole lot of dancing happening now. Amrita Arora is in the thick of it, the music keeps changing so fast that I've lost track. It's like something right out of Bollywood. There are stilt walkers too but the camera refuses to pan away from Amrita Arora, who's moving to the Kings XI Punjab number.

Sameera Reddy's now taken centre stage as the Kolkata Knight Riders' anthem plays. They're going through the team songs one by one. Sameera's wearing so much jewelry that she'd sink in a swimming pool.

Shamita Shetty is representing the Bangalore Royal Challengers. The performance seems a little flat, wonder why? Now four men form a platform of sticks and hoist her into the air, only for a brief while though. Shamita' being reused for the Chennai Super Kings' song.

Now it's Mumbai's turn and Diya Mirza's their performer. A few more teams to get through before the real action starts I suppose. Be patient ... The crowd are loving it, some of them are dancing in the stands... others remain seated.

6.55 pm local time: The pretty announcer says the closing ceremony will be an exciting blend of sport, entertainment and culture. She now hands over the micro phone to Raviiiii Shastri. He says the ceremony will have music too ...

Sharad Pawar, the BCCI president, takes over: "I am extremely proud that whatever we have seen over the last 44 days is a product of India. Today's final match will be watched in 122 countries."

Now David Morgan, the ICC president elect, hails the event and how this format will help take cricket to new places and bring in new followers of the game.

Shastri now calls the brains behind this tournament, Lalit Modi for his speech: "Good evening Mumbai, I hope you're having fun. The hopes of the IPL have been fulfilled ... People across the country have a favourite team to support as well as India ..."

"To end all this drama about IPL a bowl would be a perfect finish!" emails Rohit.

6.50 pm: There's a big crowd in already and they're being treated to a closing ceremony before the game starts. The music's blaring ... all Bollywood numbers ... it's a big party at the DY Patil Stadium.

Rameez Raja says he isn't impressed with the colour of the pitch. He doesn't think it will be very good for batting.

6.40 pm: Both these teams steamrolled their semi-final opponents by massive margins, Rajasthan beat Delhi by 105 runs and Chennai cruised through by nine wickets against Punjab.

How do you think this game will go? I didn't expect Chennai to get past Punjab that easily last evening so Rajasthan better beware. They're also not at full strength because Graeme Smith is injured but they have an able replacement in Kamran Akmal. Smith, though, churned out consistent scores and whether Akmal can match that remains to be seen.

Rameez Raja and Sunil Gavaskar are doing their pitch report and they are nattily dressed in traditional kurtas. Damien Fleming and Arun Lal are also there. Four people for a pitch report (disguised unemployment?!) ... everyone wants a piece of the IPL final. Gavaskar says that the batsman will have to play a lot on the front foot because the bounce may be variable.

The average run-rate at the DY Patil Stadium, where three IPL matches have been held is 7.91. The average run-rate of the tournament is 8.31.

Here's a bit of trivia, Mohammad Kaif and Yusuf Pathan are the only players to have played all 15 of Rajasthan's matches so far. Pathan's been superb, but Kaif has scored only 164 runs at an average of 16.4.

6.30 pm: Hello everybody and a warm welcome to Cricinfo's coverage of the Indian Premier League final between Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings at the DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai. I'm George Binoy and I'll be bringing you the action as it unfolds ball by ball.

We're finally here, an the end of an extravaganza that began on April 18 with eight teams entering revolutionary waters. Forty-four days and 58 matches later, two contenders remain to fight it out for the whopping $1.2 million in prize money and that glittering trophy decorated with gold, diamonds and other such glitter.

There's still a fair bit to go before the toss so you could spend that time browsing through our preview package. "A win for Dhoni would justify his US$1.5m price tag but would also be a last-minute twist to the fairytale ending that would hand Warne the trophy," says Nagraj Gollapudi in his preview.

Can Chennai halt Rajasthan's juggernaut? asks Dileep Premachandran. "Dhoni, who has led India to victory at the World Twenty20 and in the CB Series, has had a charmed life as leader so far. But in Warne, he's up against perhaps the greatest big-match player there's ever been. It should be some contest."

The match is finely balanced, a good over here will swing it towards Rajasthan, a 20-plus over will take it Chennai's way. Four overs remain. Watson's back. He's not been at his best during the slog for his length has been a bit too short.

10.02 pm local time: Chennai have posted 163 for 5. It's a par score for the pitch and the outfield isn't the fastest. They looked like getting more at one stage when Raina was batting but he and Morkel fell in quick succession and Dhoni got to face only 17 deliveries in the end. Yusuf bowled a superb spell of 3 for 22 to keep Rajasthan in the game after Parthiv and Vidyut had provided a rapid start.

"What made Dhoni bring Kapugedera ahead of Badrinath with Kapugedera's poor batting form?" asks Raj.

Mustafa agrees: "I don't know whose decision it was to send Kapugedera before Badrinath, but that could be the turning point today."

However, Chennai have the runs on the board and Rajasthan will have the target - 164 - and the pressure of the run-chase in a final to contend with. No score is a good/bad score until both teams have batted. I'll be back in ten minutes for the run-chase.

End of over 20 (15 runs) Chennai Super Kings 163/5
S Badrinath    6* (2b 1x4)      Sohail Tanvir    4-0-40-1
MS Dhoni    29* (17b 1x4 2x6)      SR Watson    4-0-29-1
