Kolkata Knight Riders have asked the senior pair of Aakash Chopra and Sanjay Bangar to return to India since they do not fit in the present "scheme of things". The decision was taken after discussions between coach John Buchanan and the team management and while the players were not "happy" they accepted the decision. Both Chopra and Bangar, along with a few injured players will board a flight from Cape Town on Monday.
"These [Chopra and Bangar] are two very good senior international players so John Buchanan and the team management thought that if they are not going to have the opportunity [to play] it is unfair to keep them around," Joy Bhattacharya, Kolkata CEO, said. Chopra played in Kolkata's first two matches, but got the opportunity to bat only once, managing 11 off 19 balls in first game. Bangar played in the thriller against Rajasthan Royals on Thursday, but failed to make an impression, scoring just two.
"Nobody is ever happy about going back, but they took it right frame of mind," Bhattacharya, asked for the players' reactions. He also said that both players will be back next season as their contracts are for three years.
With this latest trim Kolkata have effectively brought their squad strength down to a manageable 20 from the staggering 54 originally picked. There are 11 Indians left in the team in addition to the nine foreigners. "Right now we are down to 11 Indians and seven of them need to play so we don't think we will trim it," Bhattacharya said.
Kolkata Knight Riders squad:
Anureet Singh, Ajit Agarkar, Ashok Dinda, Sourav Ganguly, Chris Gayle, Arindam Ghosh, Moises Henriques, Brad Hodge, David Hussey, Murali Kartik, Charl Langeveldt, Brendon McCullum, Mashrafe Mortaza, Angelo Mathews, Ajantha Mendis, Wriddhiman Saha, Shoaib Shaikh, Ishant Sharma, Laxmi Shukla, Yashpal Singh.

Mr. Shahrukh, let cricketers manage themselves. We should be doing what we are best at. You know what you are good at and so you make the decision on who should be managing the day to day affairs of the team. next, Mr. Buchanan, you have loads of data at your disposal but because of your despicable behaviors you only make your critics right and especially Warney happy. Remember you are handling Indian players and not Australians. Finally, owners have every right to do what they feel but cricket is above these individuals.
Posted by debu_doc on (April 27 2009, 11:28 AM GMT)I really dont understand why KKR has been paying John Buchanan this kind of money. Even Shane Warne has clearly written in his book that Buchanan really didn't have much of a say in the famed Aussie side under Steve Waugh. The man suppossedly spent the last twelve months in researching to find out what would be a good team for KKR... and presto! he comes up with Bangar, Akash Chopra and Ajit Agarkar in the team!!! Whats more our acting dude has actually been stupid enough to speak against Mr. Gavaskar. I mean what kind of a man would do that! We are not speaking about just another cricketer.. We're talking about Mr. Indian Opener!!!
Posted by SFQ2009 on (April 27 2009, 11:27 AM GMT)Many cricket fans are waiting to wacth the pace of Murtaza but Kolkata yet to include him in the best eleven. His carishmetic batting & pace may help kolkata to right back to it's winning track. Selector should think deeply & positively....
Posted by R.Sankar on (April 27 2009, 10:50 AM GMT)Can't figure out why and how Chopra and Bangar were bought in the first place, as they are certainly not the T20 type. How about 4 coaches instead of 1? That'd serve the pathetic John Buchanan right.
Posted by armchaircritic on (April 27 2009, 10:44 AM GMT)While the team could be doing well in the future, and so is wished, right now it appears that both hands are tied. From the domestic bench, picking 7 out of 11 would not be easy. It may become the case that, owing to compulsions, non-performing Agarkar has to be picked for some matches. The domestic group appears to be weak even after a overall hefty spend by the owner. On the contrary, only 4 out of 9 overseas players can be picked. At full strength, the overseas group appears good and more than what may be utilised. In other words, there is imbalance which should have been rectified in this year's auction. Easier said than done ! Best wishes to the KKRs.
Posted by Shohan_ on (April 27 2009, 10:14 AM GMT)Sending A.Chopra and S.Banger is good decision. KKR needs a real fast bowler and a pinch hitter in the tail order. M.Mortaza could be the best answer for this. He has good movement with the ball and good stroke with his bat.
Posted by Mazlio on (April 27 2009, 10:01 AM GMT)hey guys, I really am dissapointed by the KKR's team performance. Yes we all do agree that foreign players do make the game exciting but taking the captaincy band from an indian senior to a year contracted player is not suitable. The foriegn players are there for the money, they have been auctioned and bought so they have to play, their priority is their country's pride which is why most players like Hussey and Symonds are unavailable. Being a KKR team fan i really am dissapointed by manager's way of management,he needs to invest in serious players and have a good team mix. The current team is not strong, the young players are not of the same caliber of Ghambir and the senior ones lack the fire power and skil shown by Shewag and Dravid. The team strategy is also very confusing, sending a spinner to bowl the super over was definitely not a smart move.fast bowlers can bowl different pace bowls with various lenghts to suprise the batsmen, spin in a super over is an invitation to *hit the ball*
Posted by Amin-Alvi on (April 27 2009, 09:42 AM GMT)Very good comment by vsrajan, if this is Indian Premeir League then the Indian players should be given all the preference not the Foreign players. International players should be given the same treatment if they are not performing. All the big money is spend on foreign players foreign coaches is this what Lalit Modi wants, he should spend a thought on this. Being an Indian, it really hurts to see such huge indian money being wasted.
Posted by prince04 on (April 27 2009, 09:32 AM GMT)its a good stretagic move and team should include Mashrafe Mortaza in the place of banger.Brendon McCullum could not able to handle the presure of captain for the next coming matches i think dada should lead the side.
Posted by nikhil99 on (April 27 2009, 09:30 AM GMT)Fire all non-performing members. First of all the coach.
